Use ffprobe to inspect a stream’s reported codec, bitrate, and frame-rate fields; use FFmpeg’s output statistics and YouTube Live Control Room to diagnose a live broadcast over time. For frame rate, compare avg_frame_rate with r_frame_rate and actual timestamps—r_frame_rate is a guess, not a definitive playback rate. YouTube’s live ingest recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures below were checked on October 3, 2026.
Check a file or probeable input with ffprobe
Run this in a terminal with FFmpeg installed. Replace INPUT with a local filename or an input URL that your FFmpeg build and protocol can probe:

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0
-show_entries stream=codec_name,bit_rate,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate
-of default=noprint_wrappers=1 INPUT
The output lists the first video stream’s codec, any reported bitrate, and two frame-rate fields. For JSON that scripts can parse, use:

-show_entries stream=codec_name,bit_rate,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate
-of json INPUT
-select_streams v:0selects the first video stream. Remove it to inspect all streams.-show_entrieslimits the report to the requested fields;-ofselects the output format.- Audio matters when estimating total stream bitrate: the complete transmission includes audio as well as video. Inspect all streams if you need to account for both.
FFprobe also provides -show_packets for packet-level inspection and -show_frames for decoded-frame information. The FFprobe documentation describes these options.

Understand the bitrate you see
A bit_rate value in stream metadata is not automatically a reliable measurement of a changing live transmission. It may be absent, and a file probe or short sample does not establish moment-to-moment network throughput. An encoder’s target is also not proof of what YouTube received.
For an FFmpeg encode
Enable FFmpeg’s periodic progress output while encoding, or use its documented -vstats output to examine encoder statistics. In the vstats output, br is bitrate and avg_br is average bitrate, in Kbits/s. These are encoder-reporting fields; they do not guarantee that every short interval of a variable stream matches the target. See the FFmpeg documentation.

For an active YouTube Live broadcast
Use the applicable FFmpeg output or reporting information together with stream-health details in YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect over time rather than drawing a conclusion from one metadata field. There is no single universal probe command established for every RTMP or RTMPS setup: the right approach depends on the input, output protocol, FFmpeg build, and whether the live endpoint can be probed.

avg_frame_rate is the average frame rate. FFmpeg describes r_frame_rate as a guessed base rate: the lowest rate at which timestamps can be represented accurately, which can reflect timestamp representation rather than intended playback. It may therefore be higher than the display rate. The FFmpeg AVStream reference explicitly cautions that the value is a guess.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
If the two fields differ, compare both with the encoder’s configured frame rate and inspect frame timestamps rather than treating either field alone as conclusive. For constant-frame-rate encoding, FFmpeg documentation describes a time base of 1 divided by the frame rate and identical timestamp increments. When metadata is ambiguous, frame or timestamp inspection is the more useful check.
Compare your settings with YouTube’s live ingest guidance
YouTube’s English live encoder settings page, checked October 3, 2026, specifies RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR encoding; a recommended 2-second keyframe interval, with a 4-second maximum. Choose the bitrate row matching the stream’s codec, ingest resolution, and frame rate. These are live-ingest recommendations, not proof that an encoder achieved them. Recheck YouTube’s live encoder settings before relying on the numbers, since platform guidance can change.

Preflight the stream and assess network headroom
- Match the comparison: identify the outgoing codec, ingest resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval, then use the corresponding live bitrate row.
- Run a realistic test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A static or silent test may not reveal the same behavior as the actual content.
- Check FFmpeg’s output reporting and YouTube Live Control Room stream health during the test and broadcast; watch for warnings or changes over time.
- Confirm the total stream bitrate fits available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; where a primary and backup stream apply, its network guidance says to allow for both plus that margin. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Troubleshoot common mismatches
bit_rateis missing: Not every input exposes a meaningful value. Check encoder reporting and stream health during a real output; use packet inspection where appropriate instead of assuming the metadata field must be present.r_frame_rateis higher than expected: It is a guessed base rate and may describe timestamp representation. Compare it withavg_frame_rate, the configured rate, and actual timestamps.- The configured bitrate differs from observed behavior: A target is not a guarantee of the transmitted or received rate. Inspect encoder statistics and YouTube’s stream-health information over an adequate interval.
- YouTube reports instability despite a matching recommendation: The recommended bitrate is not evidence of successful delivery. Check total upload capacity and headroom, test with representative content, and monitor stream-health messages.
- You are comparing a live stream to an upload preset: Use the live ingest table for a live broadcast; YouTube’s upload recommendations describe a different workflow.
- The endpoint cannot be probed with the example command: Probe support varies with protocol, endpoint, and FFmpeg build. Use the relevant FFmpeg output reporting and YouTube Live Control Room rather than treating the example as universal.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than diagnosing a local FFmpeg pipeline, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not a camera feed. Start the free first day.
