FFmpeg can play a prepared playlist, but it does not provide a complete native wall-clock scheduler for choosing among playlists. Make a separate ordered input list for each sequence, then use an external scheduler or wrapper to launch the right FFmpeg job at the right time. Schedule the YouTube broadcast separately in Studio: choosing a broadcast time does not choose or switch FFmpeg’s media playlist.
Keep the three schedules separate
A scheduled prerecorded-video stream involves three distinct controls:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Media order: the files and their sequence in an FFmpeg input list.
- Playlist selection by time: an external clock-based scheduler or wrapper that chooses which list to run.
- YouTube broadcast timing: the event configured in YouTube Studio or through the YouTube Live API.
YouTube describes a broadcast as an event that can be watched as it happens, with each broadcast representing a distinct YouTube video. A liveStream is the inbound audio-video configuration; YouTube says a stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams (Google for Developers, updated September 14, 2026). Scheduling the event promotes it to viewers; it does not select your FFmpeg files.

A second playlist can use evening.txt with its own ordered filenames. Use paths that are valid on the machine running FFmpeg. If a filename contains a single quote, escape it correctly for the concat-list syntax rather than assuming ordinary shell quoting will work inside the file.
Check compatibility before using the concat demuxer
The FFmpeg concat demuxer reads files and directives from a text file in sequence. It is the option to consider when you want to avoid re-encoding, but the inputs must have matching streams, including codecs and time bases. Differences in stream layout or timing can cause errors, gaps, or artifacts; inaccurate stored durations can also cause artifacts. Consult the FFmpeg manual for concat demuxer details.
For inputs that meet those requirements, a typical invocation is:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i morning.txt -c copy OUTPUT_OPTIONS
Replace OUTPUT_OPTIONS with the output format and YouTube ingest options appropriate to your setup. This is a command pattern, not a universal ready-to-run YouTube command: the right output options depend on your chosen ingest protocol and encoder configuration. Test the actual files and output before relying on a scheduled run.
When the files do not match
If the files have different codecs, stream layouts, or time bases, use a concat-filter workflow and re-encode to a consistent output rather than expecting stream-copy concatenation to normalize them. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed; see FFmpeg FAQ. Choose and test a common output format for all playlist items. The filter/re-encode path requires more processing than stream copy, so confirm the machine can sustain the chosen output settings.
Use a clock-based scheduler to choose the list
FFmpeg’s playlist concatenation and the time-based choice of playlist are different jobs. Put the selection logic in an external scheduler, service manager, or wrapper script that launches the FFmpeg command with the intended list at the required time. The reviewed FFmpeg documentation explains concatenating files; it does not establish a native wall-clock playlist scheduler or a seamless live replacement procedure.

- Define the plan: decide which playlist should begin at each time and whether a process restart at a playlist boundary is acceptable.
- Prepare and validate each list: check paths, ordering, file compatibility, and playback duration. Test every playlist independently.
- Configure the scheduler: have it select the appropriate list and launch the corresponding FFmpeg process. The exact scheduler and wrapper are implementation choices; test time zones, missed runs, process exit behavior, and recovery on your own host.
- Choose transition behavior: a straightforward design is to start a new FFmpeg run for the next list. This may interrupt or restart the encoder session, so test the transition with YouTube before using it for a real broadcast. Do not assume replacing an input list while the stream is live will switch seamlessly.
- Log and monitor runs: retain scheduler and FFmpeg output so you can identify a missed launch, invalid path, incompatible input, or failed connection.
Do not schedule two jobs to publish to the same YouTube stream at once. Ensure the previous process has stopped before the next starts, and verify how your scheduler handles a process that runs longer than expected.
Schedule the YouTube event separately
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and set its intended start time. YouTube says scheduling lets you promote the stream and viewers can receive reminders; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private and configure FFmpeg to send to that endpoint.
- Run a test with the intended playlist and encoder settings. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal in Live Control Room before the scheduled event.
- At the event, start the encoder and use Live Control Room to go live as required by your Studio workflow. A scheduled event and an active incoming encoder signal are separate parts of the operation.
You can reuse a configured YouTube stream for broadcasts at different times, but each scheduled broadcast is its own event. Match the scheduler’s playlist choice to the event you intend to start.

- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Send segments using HTTPS POST/PUT.
YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream like RTMP. See YouTube HLS setup. Choose the ingest protocol deliberately and follow the current YouTube instructions for that protocol.
Rights and channel policy checks
Only stream recordings you have the necessary rights to use. Before scheduling, review whether the material is permitted under YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules, especially if the channel is monetized. Permission to broadcast a file does not by itself establish that the channel meets monetization requirements. The official setup references above cover stream configuration, not a determination that any particular playlist is rights-cleared or eligible for monetization.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer errors or playback stops at a file boundary | Inputs differ in stream layout, codec, time base, or other required characteristics. | Inspect each input and use a consistent re-encoded concat-filter workflow if they cannot meet concat demuxer compatibility requirements. |
| Unexpected gap, timestamp jump, or artifact between files | Input durations may differ, or stored duration metadata may be inaccurate. | Check the durations and timestamps of the source files; test the complete playlist before scheduling it. |
| The wrong playlist starts | The clock-based wrapper selected the wrong list, used an unexpected time zone, or missed a scheduling condition. | Review scheduler configuration and logs, including time zone and launch conditions, then run a controlled test. |
| Two runs overlap or the stream disconnects at a change | The prior FFmpeg process may still be running, or a restart at the playlist boundary may interrupt the session. | Ensure the old process exits before launching the next; test the transition and recovery behavior with the actual YouTube setup. |
| YouTube shows no incoming video | The encoder may not be using the correct stream URL/key, or it may not be running when expected. | Check the configured endpoint and key, start the encoder, and verify signal status in Live Control Room. |
| HLS ingest is rejected or delayed | HLS-specific segment, playlist, or request requirements may not be met; HLS also has higher latency than continuous RTMP. | Check segment duration, TS format, outstanding segment count, HTTPS POST/PUT behavior, and the current YouTube HLS instructions. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing on a YouTube channel without maintaining an FFmpeg computer at home, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not an FFmpeg scheduler and does not go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
- One flat price per slot covers the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
