How to Run a 24/7 Indian Music Stream on Google Cloud for YouTube Live

Use a persistent Google Cloud VM and encoder to send a playlist to YouTube Live. This guide covers setup, stream keys, protocols, rights, resilience, and cost factors.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a continuous Indian music broadcast by playing a cleared playlist through an encoder on a Google Cloud Compute Engine virtual machine (VM), then sending that encoder’s output to YouTube Live with your channel’s stream URL and stream key. The VM keeps the encoder running when your own computer is off. Before configuring anything, clear the rights for every track and the territories where you plan to broadcast: YouTube may interrupt a live stream that contains material you are not authorized to use.

Choose the right Google Cloud setup

For a straightforward radio-style stream, the simplest design is a persistent Compute Engine VM running a software encoder such as FFmpeg. The encoder reads the audio and any accompanying video, creates a live output, and sends it directly to YouTube’s live ingestion endpoint.

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a different architecture. It accepts an incoming stream and transcodes or packages it; it is not the same thing as YouTube Live ingest, and its output does not automatically feed YouTube. Choose the endpoint and protocol for each connection deliberately.

Clear the music rights before going live

Do not treat copyright clearance as a step to handle after launch. YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have the necessary worldwide rights to exploit the live content, including music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the picture, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even when you have a license, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID.

  • Confirm the rights for every recording and composition in the actual playlist, including any artwork or video shown alongside the music.
  • Confirm that the permission covers live online broadcasting, the territories you intend to reach, and the duration and format of your use.
  • Ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID, and arrange that before the first broadcast.
  • Do not assume that buying a track, subscribing to a music service, or holding a Creator Music license authorizes a continuous live radio stream.

The available platform guidance does not establish India-specific licensing steps for a particular catalog, rights holder, or territory. Identify the relevant rights holders and obtain qualified advice for your planned use.

Prepare YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming. In the YouTube channel associated with the broadcast, enable live streaming and check the channel for restrictions. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this well before your planned launch.
  2. Create or schedule a stream. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Choose the stream configuration appropriate for your intended audio and video.
  3. Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the YouTube stream URL (also called the server URL) and the stream key. Use the values shown for your own channel and stream; they are not interchangeable with values from another channel.
  4. Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in a public script, screenshot, or support post. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the replacement.

Provision a Compute Engine VM

  1. Create or select a Google Cloud project. Set up billing for the project before provisioning resources. The VM and network usage will be billed according to the configuration and actual use.
  2. Select a region and VM size. Choose a region suitable for your operation and a machine size that can handle the encoder and media workload. Google Cloud documentation lists asia-south1 among supported regions for the Live Stream API quickstart, but that does not establish availability for every service or configuration. Check current Compute Engine and service availability during deployment.
  3. Create a persistent VM. Install a compatible operating system and the encoder you plan to use. Store the media on persistent storage that remains available to the VM, and confirm that the VM can access it after a restart.
  4. Limit access. Use appropriate account permissions and secure remote administration. Keep the stream key out of broadly readable files and restrict access to the VM and media.
  5. Enable the Live Stream API only if you chose that architecture. The VM encoder route sending directly to YouTube does not require enabling the separate Live Stream API. If you use the API, its setup requires a Google Cloud project, billing, API enablement, credentials, and permissions.

Configure the encoder and test the broadcast

Configure your encoder to read the intended playlist or media source and send its output to the YouTube server URL using the stream key. The exact encoder fields and output settings depend on the software, media, and YouTube configuration. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe interval to values supported by YouTube for the stream you created; do not assume one preset fits every source. For a music-led stream, verify that the audio is present, at a consistent level, and not clipped.

  1. Build a representative test playlist. Include the file types and transitions you expect in the real broadcast. Check that the encoder can move from one item to the next without stopping or producing silence.
  2. Enter the connection details. Put the stream URL and key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s YouTube output configuration. Keep the key private.
  3. Start a test broadcast. Start the encoder and inspect the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the picture, sound, and stream status are as expected before making the broadcast public or relying on unattended operation.
  4. Check the viewer playback page. Confirm that the public-facing player receives the stream and that audio remains audible. A healthy encoder process alone does not prove that viewers can receive the broadcast.
  5. Measure the upload path. Check the VM’s actual outbound network performance while the encoder is running. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload bandwidth, so do not size the connection to run at its limit.
  6. Test recovery deliberately. Restart the encoder and VM in a controlled test and verify that the process resumes, reconnects to YouTube, and produces a watchable stream. Do this before depending on unattended operation.

Make the stream resilient enough to run continuously

A cloud VM removes the need to leave a home computer running, but it does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting. The encoder process can exit, the VM can become unavailable, or YouTube can drop the connection. Plan how each failure will be detected and handled.

  • Process supervision: Configure a supervisor or equivalent restart behavior so an encoder process that exits can be started again. Verify the behavior rather than assuming a reboot or failure will be recovered automatically.
  • VM recovery: Decide how the VM is restarted after an interruption and ensure the media and encoder configuration remain available when it comes back.
  • Monitoring and alerts: Monitor both the encoder/VM and the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Arrange an alert or human check for a stopped process, failed connection, or missing output.
  • Intervention plan: Keep a secure way to access the VM and rotate the YouTube key if necessary. Decide who can respond if the stream stops or a rights claim appears.
  • Archive expectations: YouTube automatically archives live streams that are under 12 hours. Do not rely on a single intact automatic archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast; plan separate recordings or shorter scheduled streams if an archive is important.

The 24-hour session limit documented for Google Cloud’s Live Stream API applies to a running API channel and may require a restart. It is not a stated automatic stop interval for every Compute Engine VM or every YouTube encoder session. Keep the API lifecycle distinct from the uptime and recovery design of a VM-based encoder.

Keep the connection protocol straight

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key, typically with an RTMP-style connection; YouTube also offers HLS ingestion as a separate option. HLS has its own playlist and segment requirements and higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API accepts RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH inputs, and Google recommends SRT where possible for its packet-loss recovery features. That recommendation concerns input to the API and does not mean YouTube accepts every API input or output unchanged.

Estimate Google Cloud costs from your actual design

There is no single defensible monthly cost for this setup without knowing the VM size, region, uptime, storage, and outbound network use. A continuously running VM incurs compute costs for its operating time; media storage and network egress can add to the bill. The managed Live Stream API has a different service and configuration profile, so do not apply a VM-only estimate to it.

  • Estimate compute-hours for the selected VM and the number of hours it will run.
  • Include persistent storage for the playlist, backups, and any retained recordings.
  • Estimate outbound network use based on the encoded stream and operating schedule.
  • Check current Google Cloud pricing tools and service terms for your chosen region and configuration before deployment.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Live Control Room does not show an incoming stream. The encoder is not running, or its destination URL, key, or protocol does not match the YouTube stream. Confirm the current server URL and key in Live Control Room, check the encoder output configuration, and inspect its connection status.
The encoder connects, but viewers hear silence or distorted audio. The playlist item may have no usable audio, the wrong audio source may be selected, or levels may be too low or clipped. Test each media type, inspect encoder audio meters, and listen to the Live Control Room preview and viewer playback.
The stream repeatedly disconnects. Insufficient upload headroom, unstable network connectivity, or an encoder process failure. Check actual outbound bandwidth and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% spare capacity; inspect encoder and VM logs, then verify process recovery.
The stream stops after a VM restart. The encoder was started only in an interactive session or its media/configuration did not persist. Configure a boot-time start or process supervisor, verify storage persistence, and test a controlled reboot.
The picture is replaced or the broadcast is interrupted. YouTube detected third-party material or a rights holder’s Content ID settings affected the stream. Review the claim and rights status for the specific catalog; resolve licensing and Content ID allowlisting with the relevant rights holder before resuming.
An API-based channel needs a restart. The Google Cloud Live Stream API documents a 24-hour running-session limit after which the channel may need to be restarted. Build the API channel lifecycle into the operating plan. Do not apply this API limit automatically to a direct VM-to-YouTube encoder setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to configure and supervise a VM, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded-video stream live. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
