Rotating your Chromebook screen is handy for reading in portrait mode, setting up a kiosk, or using your device with a dock. The good news: Chromebook (ChromeOS) makes screen rotation straightforward, and there are multiple ways to do it.
This guide covers three different methods—Display settings, a keyboard shortcut, and a direct settings link—plus what to do when rotation doesn’t behave as expected.

Why rotate the screen on a Chromebook
Screen rotation changes the orientation of the display output without you needing any third-party tools. That’s especially useful on Chromebooks with tablet-style use, or when you’re mounting the device in portrait layout.
Typical reasons include using apps like e-readers and PDFs more comfortably, improving visibility at certain angles, and matching the orientation of an external monitor or projector.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Before you start (what to check)
- Confirm you’re on ChromeOS: the steps here assume a Chromebook (ChromeOS). Windows/macOS menus won’t match.
- Look for a rotation option: some enterprise devices or managed settings can limit display controls.
- Know the difference between internal and external displays: if you’re using a monitor, rotation may need to be set per display.
- Close any “fullscreen-only” app if rotation feels stuck; some apps behave differently in fullscreen.
Method 1: Rotate from Chromebook Display settings
This is the most reliable method because it doesn’t depend on keyboard mappings. You’ll set rotation through ChromeOS Display settings and keep the change until you switch it back.
Steps:
- Click the clock area in the bottom-right corner of your screen.
- Choose Settings (gear icon).
- Open Device.
- Select Displays.
- Find Rotation.
- Pick one of the available options: Landscape, Portrait, Landscape (flipped), or Portrait (flipped).
- Test your orientation in an app (for example, open the Files app and preview a document).
Method 2: Rotate with a keyboard shortcut
On many Chromebooks, there’s a built-in keyboard shortcut that rotates the display. It’s fast when you need to change orientation frequently.
Try this shortcut:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Refresh.
- On most Chromebook keyboards, the Refresh key is the key with a circular arrow icon on the top row (near the brightness/fullscreen keys).
- Each press cycles to the next rotation state.
If the shortcut does nothing, don’t force it. Your device may map rotation differently, or rotation controls may be restricted by school/work management. Use Method 1 instead.
Method 3: Rotate using a direct Display settings URL
If you prefer shortcuts to settings, you can jump straight to the Display page by opening a ChromeOS settings URL in the browser address bar. This is still the official UI—just faster than going through menus.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Steps:
- Open the Chrome browser (or a browser tab).
- Click the address bar and paste:
chrome://settings/display - Press Enter.
- Locate Rotation.
- Select the orientation you want (Portrait / Landscape / flipped variants).
If chrome://settings/display loads a different page than expected, try the shorter path chrome://settings/display again, or fall back to Method 1.
External monitors: rotating the right display
When you connect a monitor, the rotation behavior depends on which display ChromeOS is controlling. In many setups, you rotate the external monitor separately from the laptop screen.
What to do:
- Connect your external display (HDMI/USB-C dock).
- Open Settings → Device → Displays.
- Look for a way to select which display you’re adjusting (often a numbered display selector or a highlighted display preview).
- Set Rotation for the correct display.
- Confirm orientation by moving a window across screens (drag the window from the Chromebook display to the external monitor).
If rotation won’t apply to an external monitor, try changing the monitor’s own setting (some displays have a “rotate” feature in their on-screen menu).
Troubleshooting when rotation won’t change
Rotation issues are usually one of three things: managed restrictions, missing rotation controls, or a display/driver handshake problem with external hardware.

Rotation option is missing in Displays settings
If you don’t see Rotation at all, check these possibilities:
- Device model limitation: some Chromebooks/tablets only support specific orientations.
- Enterprise policy: school/work managed devices can restrict display changes.
- Locked orientation mode: some devices disable rotation when in certain modes.
Try next: use Method 2 (keyboard) once, then re-check Settings → Device → Displays.
Keyboard shortcut doesn’t work
Common causes are keyboard mapping differences or a “special keys” mode.

- Go to Settings → Device → Displays.
- Check Display size / Resolution settings.
- Pick a recommended resolution if you see options like “Recommended.”
External monitor rotates back or ignores your change
- Disconnect/reconnect the cable or dock.
- Power-cycle the monitor after reconnecting (turn it off for 10 seconds).
- In the monitor’s OSD menu, disable its own rotation if it conflicts with Chromebook rotation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Rotating the wrong display when an external monitor is connected.
- Expecting the rotation to rotate everything: some apps or kiosk modes may force orientation.
- Using the wrong keyboard key: on Chromebook keyboards, the “Refresh” key is not always obvious if your layout is non-US or you use an external keyboard.
- Skipping resolution checks when the image looks off after rotation.
FAQs
Will screen rotation work on all Chromebooks?
Most Chromebooks support rotation, but some models or managed devices may not show a Rotation control. If the option is missing, use the keyboard method once and then rely on the model’s supported orientations.
How do I rotate back to normal landscape?
Return to Settings → Device → Displays and set Rotation to Landscape. If you used the keyboard shortcut, pressing the shortcut again typically cycles back.
Can I rotate the screen permanently?
Rotation is typically persistent until you change it again. Power-cycling usually doesn’t reset it, but enterprise policies or specific app modes can override it.

Does rotation affect video streaming or web pages?
Usually it affects the entire display orientation. Some media players may handle orientation differently, especially if they use fullscreen or PiP modes.

My Chromebook is stuck in portrait—what should I do?
Use Method 1 and select Landscape. If you can’t access Settings because the interface is hard to use, try the keyboard shortcut (Method 2) to cycle orientations.
Bottom Line
If you want the most dependable result, use Settings → Device → Displays → Rotation. If you want speed, try Ctrl + Shift + Refresh. And if you prefer direct navigation, chrome://settings/display gets you to the exact rotation control fast.
With one of these three methods, you can set the orientation you need for work, reading, and external display setups—then fine-tune resolution if the image doesn’t look right.
