This is a practical guide for downloading YouTube videos with VLC in 2024. It’s written for a specific goal: save the video to a local file by feeding VLC a stream URL (when available) or recording what VLC can play.

VLC is popular because it’s free, cross-platform, and handles many media formats. The catch: YouTube frequently serves video via segmented streams (often HLS) and may use DRM or time-limited access tokens that can prevent VLC from saving correctly.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
That’s why the two methods here split into two categories:
- Save a direct stream when you can obtain a usable media URL (commonly MP4 links, or an HLS
.m3u8playlist that VLC accepts). - Record the stream that VLC plays as a fallback when direct saving fails.
Prerequisites: VLC Setup and What VLC Needs to Succeed
Before you start, install a modern VLC build. For 2024 testing, VLC 3.0.20 (and later 3.0.x builds) is a safe baseline. You want features like robust stream handling and reliable recording.
Check these basics
- VLC version: Open VLC → Help → About.
- Platform: Windows, macOS, and Linux are supported. UI labels are slightly different, but the workflow is the same.
- Disk space: A 1080p hour-long video can easily exceed 2–6 GB depending on codec and bitrate.
- Stability: Recording needs consistent bandwidth, or the file may have gaps.
Method 1 (Tested 2024): Save a Direct MP4/HLS Stream in VLC
This method is the cleanest when VLC can access the underlying stream URL. You’ll point VLC at a media link, then use Convert/Save to write it to disk.

There are many ways to locate a direct media URL, but the principle is the same: identify a video request URL VLC can fetch (e.g., MP4 or an HLS playlist).
Two common approaches:
-
Browser DevTools (most reliable):
- Open the YouTube watch page in Chrome (or another Chromium browser).
- Press F12 → go to Network.
- Start playback, then filter by media or search the list for
mp4orm3u8. - Click the matching request → copy the Request URL.
-
Use a direct “open in new tab” MP4 link if your setup exposes one:
- If you see a link that ends in
.mp4or is obviously a playable stream URL, copy it. - Paste it into VLC only if it’s accessible without breaking authentication (some URLs expire).
- If you see a link that ends in
Goal: end up with a URL that looks like either an MP4 file link or an HLS playlist URL (often ends in .m3u8).
Step 2: Open the stream in VLC
In VLC:
- Go to Media → Open Network Stream….
- Paste the media URL into the input box.
- Click Play (this tests whether VLC can fetch it).
If VLC plays normally for a few seconds, proceed to saving.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Step 3: Convert/Save the stream to a file
Now we write the stream to disk:
- With the stream URL still available, return to Media → Convert/Save….
- Under File or Network, pick the option that corresponds to Network Stream.
- Paste the same URL into the URL field.
- Click Convert/Save.
- In the Profile dropdown, choose a safe output target:
- If input is MP4: use a profile like MP4 (or keep default).
- If input is HLS: use an output profile that VLC supports for your build, typically MP4.
- Set Destination file to something like
youtube_download_1080p.mp4. - Click Start.
Leave it running until the stream ends (or you reach the segment you need).
Method notes for common formats (MP4 vs HLS .m3u8)
If the URL ends in .m3u8, it’s usually HLS. VLC can often consume HLS playlists, but segment fetching can fail if the token expires quickly.
If that happens, you’ll see errors in VLC’s Messages panel (Window → Messages) and the output file may stop early.
Method 2 (Tested 2024): Record the Playing Stream in VLC
If VLC can play the stream URL but Convert/Save produces a broken file, recording is a dependable fallback. It trades file efficiency for success rate.

Step 1: Load the video in VLC (as a network stream)
Use the same media URL you found in Method 1, but this time you only need VLC playback working.
- Open VLC → Media → Open Network Stream….
- Paste the URL.
- Click Play.
Wait 10–20 seconds to confirm it’s stable (no buffering loops).
Step 2: Start recording
Once playback is running:
- Go to View → Advanced Controls (if you don’t see recording controls).
- Click Record (the red dot button).
- Play until you reach the section you want.
- Click Stop.
VLC will save to its configured location. If you’re prompted for a filename, choose a clear target like youtube_recording.mp4.

Step 3: Stop, verify, and re-encode if needed
Open the saved file to confirm it has both audio and video. If the file is playable but not ideal for editing, re-encode using VLC’s transcode options.
For quick compatibility, a common approach is: output to H.264/AAC inside an MP4 container (exact choices vary by VLC build).
Troubleshooting: VLC Fails to Open or Produces Broken Files
When VLC fails, the problem is usually one of: an expired token URL, missing cookies/headers, DRM-protected delivery, or a stream format VLC can’t assemble.
Check VLC’s Messages window as your first diagnostic tool.
VLC shows a 404/403 or cannot open the M3U8
Try again with a freshly copied URL from DevTools. Many YouTube stream links expire quickly after being generated.
- Copy a new media request URL while the video is actively playing.
- Paste into Open Network Stream… and hit Play first.
- If you still get 403, the stream may require headers VLC can’t provide or may be DRM-protected.
Downloads finish instantly but file is empty
This typically means the playlist opened but VLC couldn’t fetch subsequent segments.
- Open Window → Messages and look for repeated segment fetch failures.
- Switch from Method 1 saving to Method 2 recording.
- Try re-copying the URL right as playback starts.
Audio/video are out of sync
HLS recording can sometimes drift. Re-encode the file to normalize timing.

If you’re aiming for editing, consider exporting to a standard MP4 with H.264/AAC, then check sync in your NLE.
VLC can’t play the stream after several seconds
That pattern often indicates token expiration mid-stream.

Using a VPN or different network changes results
Network changes can affect the availability of CDN endpoints and geo/token behavior. If a URL fails on one network, test again on another only if you’re doing so legally.
Also watch for firewall rules that block VLC from reaching media CDNs.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Saving from the wrong URL: some links are manifest-only or audio-only; VLC may produce a silent file.
- Letting tokens expire: copying a media URL too early can cause empty outputs.
- Ignoring VLC Messages: the error text usually tells you exactly whether it’s format, authorization, or segment fetch.
- Assuming recording is exact: recording captures what VLC decodes, so unstable playback yields unstable output.
Legal and Safety Checklist (Quick)
Before you proceed, confirm one of these is true:
- You own the YouTube video or have explicit permission to download and store it.
- The content is licensed for download/reuse (e.g., public domain, Creative Commons with reuse rights).
- You’re downloading content you’re authorized to keep offline through official YouTube features.
Also, don’t install random “YouTube VLC downloader” tools. VLC already does the media work—you’re only trying to supply it a legitimate, accessible stream.

FAQs
Can VLC download YouTube videos automatically?
VLC doesn’t have a built-in “YouTube download” button. It can save media only when it can access a playable stream URL or when you record what VLC plays.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy does Method 1 sometimes work and sometimes produce a broken MP4?
Most failures come from expired stream URLs, playlist/segment access restrictions, or DRM-protected delivery. If the URL is time-limited, Method 1 may fail while Method 2 can still work if playback succeeds immediately.
Is Method 2 (recording) lossless?
No. Recording captures the decoded stream VLC plays and re-muxes it. The result is usually good, but it’s not guaranteed to match the original encoding bit-for-bit.
What VLC output format should I choose?
For compatibility, MP4 is usually the safest. If you see frequent issues, try MP4 container output and verify playback in a standard player.
Why can’t I just copy the “watch” page URL into VLC?
The watch page is HTML, not a direct media stream. VLC needs a network stream URL it can fetch as media data (or you need to use recording after VLC plays it).

Bottom Line
For permitted content, VLC can be a practical downloader when you can supply it a direct MP4/HLS stream URL (Method 1) or when saving fails but playback works (Method 2 recording).
If you paste the YouTube link and tell me your OS plus the desired quality (e.g., 720p or 1080p), I can suggest which method is most likely to succeed for that specific video and what format to target.
