For automatic playback in order, use an OBS VLC Video Source playlist; for operator-controlled selection, use separate media sources or scenes. The event can stay live while the program material changes, but rehearse the exact setup first: source transitions and playback behavior depend on configuration.
What stays live—and what changes
YouTube receives a video feed from an encoder such as OBS. The encoder sends that feed using the stream URL and stream key. To change lessons without ending the event, keep the encoder output connected and change the media playing inside the encoder. YouTube’s guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

This is an encoder-side workflow, not a YouTube Live Control Room feature that rotates recorded lessons for you. YouTube does not guarantee that every encoder, plugin, or live playlist edit will transition without a glitch, so test the exact configuration before relying on it.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Install VLC, then restart OBS or check that the VLC Video Source is available. If it does not appear, confirm VLC is installed and restart OBS.
- In the OBS scene that will remain on air, add a VLC Video Source and add the lesson files to its playlist.
- Turn off shuffle for a predictable order. Enable Loop Playlist only if you want the list to start over after its final lesson; otherwise, decide what viewers should see when playback ends.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS provides options that can stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue playback while a source is hidden. Match the setting to whether the source may be hidden and whether it should retain its lesson position.
- Run a test event. Confirm video and sound, then watch the transition from one file to the next before using the setup for the real stream.
Manual selection of the next lesson
For operator-controlled rotation, add each lesson as a separate Media Source or place each lesson in its own scene. When ready, switch the visible source or scene while leaving OBS’s encoder output connected to YouTube. This lets the operator choose what appears next.
Rehearse the switches. OBS documents that a media source may reload when it becomes visible, which can leave a short period with no source on screen. Check how your scenes and source visibility settings behave before going live.

Prepare and monitor the YouTube stream
- Check that the channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and meet the stated minimum age of 16. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming for current requirements.
- Set up the encoder and event ahead of time. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview before the event and confirm the correct feed is arriving.
- Monitor picture and audio during the stream, particularly at lesson changes. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving bandwidth headroom; one page specifies 20% when sizing upload bandwidth. See YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips.
- Keep a local recording if the replay matters. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
When dedicated hardware makes sense
If you need scheduled playback without a computer, YouTube’s verified encoder list describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media to stream directly to YouTube Live. This is a specialized hardware alternative, not a requirement for the OBS method. Confirm current availability, feature details, and price before purchasing. See YouTube’s verified encoder list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTroubleshooting lesson changes
- The VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and restart OBS, then check the source-adding menu again.
- The lessons play in an unexpected order: Turn shuffle off and review the playlist order in the VLC Video Source.
- A lesson restarts or pauses after a scene switch: Review the source’s visibility behavior and rehearse the same hide-and-show sequence you plan to use on air.
- The screen goes blank between manual lessons: A media source may reload when shown. Test the transition and consider a different scene arrangement or automatic playlist workflow if the gap is disruptive.
- The YouTube event ends when changing a lesson: Check that you are switching OBS sources or scenes rather than stopping the encoder output or ending the event in Live Control Room.
- The stream is unstable: Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor audio, video, and upload capacity. Leave the recommended bandwidth headroom and test the full setup ahead of the event.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Record a local backup if preserving the lesson stream is important.
