To make Puppeteer screenshot tests ignore changing timestamps or rotating ads, alter the page before capturing it: inject CSS to hide volatile elements, or replace them with deterministic content. Puppeteer’s documented screenshot options do not provide Playwright’s locator-based mask option or screenshot stylesheet setting, so this is a page-preparation technique—not a native Puppeteer mask API.
Choose what the test should still verify
Decide whether the changing region’s space and appearance are part of the behavior under test. A timestamp’s text may be irrelevant while its position matters; an ad creative may be volatile while the ad slot’s size and placement still matter.

Keep selectors limited to intentionally volatile elements. Hiding a whole ad container can conceal a real spacing or placement defect if those properties matter to the page being tested.
Apply stable styling before capturing

Navigate to the page and wait for the state your test needs. Do not capture while the page is still changing if the test depends on a completed render.

Target the timestamp and ad elements with stable selectors. Prefer test IDs or application-owned selectors, such as
data-testid, over selectors tied to incidental markup. -
Inject CSS to hide the volatile content, or set deterministic replacement content if the region’s geometry or presentation is under test.

Keep the comparison environment consistent. Operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering, as Playwright’s visual comparison guidance notes.
Example: hide a timestamp and an ad slot while preserving their space

Capture a component instead of the full page
If the visual assertion is about a single component, capture that element rather than including unrelated parts of the page. Puppeteer documents element screenshots through ElementHandle.screenshot(); for example, after locating the component:

Puppeteer documents page and element screenshot capture, with options such as clipping, full-page capture, and output type. Its documented ScreenshotOptions do not list a locator-based mask or screenshot stylesheet field. The CSS injection above changes the page before the normal screenshot call; it should not be described as a built-in Puppeteer masking API.
Playwright has separate APIs for related workflows: its visual comparison documentation describes stylesheet-based filtering of volatile elements, and its Page screenshot API documents a locator mask array and a stylesheet string. Those are Playwright features, not Puppeteer settings.
Keep the test useful as the page changes
- Use narrow selectors: mask only the timestamp or creative that is expected to vary, not a large parent container that also contains meaningful content.
- Review the masked region when markup or layout changes: a stale selector can stop matching, while an overly broad one can hide a genuine regression.
- Preserve geometry when relevant: use
visibility: hiddenor stable fixture content if the slot’s footprint is part of the expected result. - Standardize rendering conditions: run baseline and comparison captures with consistent browser and host settings to reduce unrelated differences.
Troubleshoot common failures
The timestamp or ad is still visible
Confirm the selector matches the rendered element and that the style is applied after navigation but before the screenshot. If the element is created later, wait for it or apply the style after it appears. Check whether the visible content is inside an iframe; page-level CSS does not automatically style a separate frame’s document.

The page shifts after masking
This is expected when using display: none. Switch to visibility: hidden to retain the space, or insert stable content with the expected dimensions.
The test passes but misses a layout defect
The mask may cover too much or remove a region the test should validate. Narrow the selector and, where slot size or placement matters, replace only the variable creative with a deterministic fixture rather than hiding the container.

Check whether other dynamic elements remain, and whether browser version, operating system, rendering settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode differ between runs. Those environmental factors can alter rendered output independently of the targeted timestamp or ad.
