If you need visual regression checks rather than just image capture, start with the test framework your team already runs. Playwright Test has built-in screenshot assertions; Cypress teams can use local comparison plugins or hosted visual-testing services. For capture-only work—without setting up and maintaining a browser automation environment—ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it returns screenshots or PDFs from one API request and bills only clean captures.
First decide what “screenshot testing” means
Puppeteer automates a browser and can take screenshots, but a screenshot becomes a regression check only when you compare it with a reference image and review meaningful changes. That distinction determines what to choose:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Capture only: You need an image or PDF of a page, perhaps for documentation, monitoring, or a report.
- Visual regression: You need tests to compare a new render with an approved baseline and flag differences.
- Managed visual review: You want cloud rendering, managed baselines, and a dashboard or approval flow, potentially across browsers and viewport sizes.
These are related but not interchangeable jobs. A screenshot API can simplify capture; it does not by itself supply a baseline-review process. A visual-testing service may include capture, comparison, and review as one workflow.

ScreenshotNeo: capture without browser setup
For capture-only needs, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Its response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.
ScreenshotNeo is not a replacement for visual diffing when you need approved baselines and regression review. It is the first alternative to try when the task is to capture reliable page images without owning browser setup. It also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Playwright Test: built-in visual assertions
If you want visual checks inside an existing Playwright Test suite, the documented direct alternative is await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On its first run, the assertion creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare against that reference. By default, expectation files live alongside the tests, so they can be reviewed and committed with the code. When an intended UI change should become the new reference, update snapshots deliberately with the runner’s snapshot-update option rather than accepting changes automatically. See the Playwright screenshot comparison guide and snapshot assertion API.
This is a strong fit when the team is already using Playwright Test and wants to own image files and baseline changes in its normal code-review process. Snapshot comparison methods belong to the Playwright Test runner; simply using browser automation is not the same thing as having that test workflow.

Cypress with a local comparison plugin
Cypress teams can add an open-source plugin that captures screenshots and compares pixels against a baseline stored with the code, locally or in CI. The team retains the images and is responsible for updating references and reviewing diffs. This suits teams that want local control and already have Cypress tests; check a plugin’s current maintenance, compatibility, and usage instructions before adopting it. Cypress outlines the distinction in its visual testing guide.
Hosted visual-testing services
A hosted service can add cloud rendering, managed baselines, dashboards, or pull-request review. Cypress lists integration examples including Applitools, Argos, Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy, Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io; that is an example list, not a ranking or an exhaustive market survey.

- Percy: Cypress describes a workflow that captures DOM snapshots during tests, renders them across browsers and responsive widths in the cloud, and supports review and approval of visual changes.
- Chromatic: Cypress describes capturing a UI archive during Cypress tests, then rendering and diffing it in the cloud.
- Applitools Eyes: Its own integration pages describe visual checkpoints, match levels, cloud cross-browser rendering, and DOM/CSS context to help diagnose failures. Applitools also makes vendor claims about filtering rendering noise; those claims are not independent comparative results.
Read the vendors’ current product and integration documentation before choosing: features and integrations change, and the cited descriptions establish workflows, not comparative accuracy or performance. See Applitools Eyes for Playwright and Applitools’ Cypress integration.
Selenium: retain the automation framework, add visual tooling as needed
Selenium may make sense if your existing suite, language ecosystem, and team experience are built around it. The Selenium documentation establishes it as a browser automation project, but the documentation reviewed here does not establish a built-in baseline-and-diff workflow equivalent to Playwright Test’s screenshot assertions. Treat it as the browser automation layer and verify what separate capture, comparison, and review components your chosen stack requires. See the Selenium documentation.

Choose based on framework fit, who owns baselines, where reviewers inspect diffs, how many browsers and viewport sizes matter, and whether your team can maintain a stable rendering environment. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal winner, head-to-head speed or accuracy, or comparative pricing.
Make visual comparisons more reliable
Most noisy screenshot tests are a state-control problem, not a reason to compare every page more aggressively. Cypress puts it plainly: “Snapshot commands capture whatever is on screen at that moment.” Apply that principle before selecting tolerances or changing a baseline.

- Keep the renderer consistent. Playwright warns that screenshots can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare references in the same environment. If you intentionally test separate browsers or platforms, maintain the corresponding references rather than treating their rendering as identical.
- Stabilize the page before capture. Wait for the relevant content to load; control test data, time-dependent text, animations, and other changing regions. Playwright supports pixel-difference controls and a
stylePathoption to hide volatile content such as iframes during capture. - Choose meaningful checkpoints. Prioritize important pages, components, and states instead of taking snapshots indiscriminately throughout the suite. If the behavior under test is component-specific, an element-level snapshot can avoid unrelated full-page differences.
- Review intended design changes as changes. Inspect a diff and update its reference only when the visual change is approved. An automatic baseline refresh can hide a regression as easily as it can accept a redesign.
Cypress’s recommendations for waiting until a page stabilizes, controlling content and test data, and selecting meaningful checkpoints are in its visual testing guide.
ScreenshotNeo capture example
When you need a capture rather than an in-suite visual assertion, the following cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a URL. Replace the example URL and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan.

A screenshot assertion fails after a deliberate redesign
Review the actual diff first. If it is intended, update the relevant reference using Playwright Test’s snapshot-update workflow and commit the reviewed image with the test changes. Do not refresh all references without inspecting them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A full-page image fails because an unrelated region changed
Make the assertion narrower when the requirement is local: use a component or element-level snapshot where supported, or hide known volatile content. Keep full-page checks for changes where the whole page is the intended scope.
The team expects a screenshot API to catch regressions
Capture and comparison are separate capabilities. Add a baseline and diff-review step or use a visual-testing workflow that supplies those pieces; an image returned by an API alone does not establish whether it changed from an approved version.
Selenium captures images, but there is no useful visual verdict
Verify which component in your Selenium stack owns baseline storage, comparison, and review. The Selenium documentation cited here does not establish those as a bundled equivalent to Playwright Test’s snapshot assertions.

Cost, performance, and operational trade-offs
The available product documentation does not provide a comparable benchmark for capture speed, rendering accuracy, or total cost across these choices, so selecting on an unverified speed claim would be misleading. Local workflows keep files and review under team control but require the team to maintain the runtime and baseline process. Hosted workflows may offload rendering and organize approvals, while adding a service and its workflow to evaluate. ScreenshotNeo publishes these plans: Free includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; Starter is $5 for 3,000; Growth is $15 for 15,000; Pro is $39 for 60,000; Scale is $99 for 250,000; and Business is $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. For API cost accounting, its response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers, and cache hits are not billed.
For visual regression, the larger reliability cost is often operational: keeping the browser and page state reproducible, reviewing diffs, and approving baseline changes safely. A hosted review workflow may shift some work, but confirm its exact coverage and workflow for your stack before committing to it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Puppeteer for visual regression testing?
Yes, if your workflow adds reference images, comparisons, and a review process; taking screenshots alone does not detect regressions.
Does ScreenshotNeo replace Playwright screenshot assertions?
No. ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot and PDF capture API; Playwright Test’s `toHaveScreenshot()` provides the documented reference-and-comparison assertion workflow.
