For playlist membership, use the YouTube Data API. If you need both behaviors, automate them as separate tasks. For multiple channels, configure each destination and its YouTube live-stream resource separately.
First decide what “rotate playlists” means
The phrase can describe two different jobs. One is rotating local media files that FFmpeg reads and sends to an output. The other is changing the videos listed in a playlist on YouTube. The first is a media-and-encoder workflow; the second is a YouTube Data API workflow. A script can coordinate both, but an FFmpeg concat list does not edit YouTube playlist membership.

Rotate local video files in an FFmpeg output
1. Prepare an ordered concat list
Create a plain-text file with the media paths in the order you want FFmpeg to process them. For example:

file '/media/episode-b.mp4'The concat demuxer presents the files as a sequence, but it is not a promise that arbitrary files will join seamlessly. The FFmpeg documentation says all files must have the same streams, including the same codecs and time base. Check the actual media, not just the filename extension: files with incompatible streams, mismatched effective lengths, or inaccurate duration metadata can produce gaps or artifacts.

2. Decide how the sequence should end or repeat
A concat list describes an order; it does not configure your YouTube broadcast schedule. Decide whether the output should finish when the list ends, restart the encoder for another pass, or be arranged to continue through repeated entries. Test the sequence and its transition points before relying on it for a live handoff. If you need scheduled broadcasts, treat that as a separate broadcast-lifecycle problem rather than assuming the file list schedules YouTube.
3. Configure each FFmpeg output deliberately
There is no single safe FFmpeg command for every YouTube Live setup. The right inputs, stream mapping, codecs, encoding settings, and output URL depend on your files, installed FFmpeg build, and current YouTube Live requirements. FFmpeg accepts multiple input and output URLs, but that flexibility does not make a one-line command a universal multi-channel configuration. Check the current YouTube Live requirements and the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version before choosing those settings.

For several channels, define each channel as its own configured destination and manage its credentials and live-stream resource independently. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation states that a different liveStream resource is required for every channel in its described workflow. Do not put stream keys or other credentials in the concat list, source control, logs, or shell history; keep them out of files that might be shared or exposed.

4. Test before relying on the rotation
- Confirm every path in the concat file resolves on the machine running FFmpeg.
- Check that the files have compatible streams and play in the intended order.
- Watch transitions for gaps, artifacts, or unexpected pauses; duration metadata can affect timestamp handling.
- Test each channel’s output configuration independently before running several destinations together.
- Keep the encoder process and YouTube broadcast lifecycle distinct in your design: a media sequence alone does not create or schedule a broadcast.
Change videos in YouTube playlists with the Data API
If by “rotate” you mean changing which uploaded videos appear in each YouTube playlist, use the YouTube Data API rather than the FFmpeg concat demuxer. The playlist methods are separate: playlistItems.list inspects entries, while insert, update, and delete operations change them.

- Identify the destination playlist. Find the playlist ID for the intended channel and playlist. Do not treat a video ID as a playlist ID.
- Authorize the script. An insert is an authorized API operation, not an anonymous FFmpeg command. Set up the required OAuth authorization for the account and playlist you intend to manage.
- Inspect current entries if needed. Call
playlistItems.listwhen the automation needs to check what is already present before deciding what to change. - Insert the intended video. Call
playlistItems.insertwith the destination playlist and video resource. Use the corresponding update or delete operation when changing or removing an existing playlist item; those actions require the relevant playlist-item identity. - Repeat with the correct channel and playlist identities. Make each operation explicit about which authorized channel and playlist it targets, and handle errors before proceeding to the next change.
Budget API quota before automating frequent changes
Google for Developers’ YouTube Data API references list a cost of 1 quota unit per playlistItems.list call and 50 quota units per playlistItems.insert call. The API overview describes a default allocation of 10,000 units per day for most endpoints, excluding specially allocated search and video-upload methods, and says that defaults can change. These are quota accounting figures, not performance measures or a guarantee that your project has that allocation. Check the current quota shown for your API project before estimating how often a script can make changes. Avoid unnecessary writes and repeated list calls.
Handle multiple channels as separate targets
Write down the intended action for each channel before automating it: a local-media output, a YouTube playlist edit, a live broadcast, or some combination. Keep each channel’s playlist ID, authorization, live-stream resource, and output configuration associated with the correct target. The YouTube Live API requirement for a distinct stream resource per channel applies to its documented workflow; it does not mean that one FFmpeg concat file edits or manages every channel automatically.

Also decide what should happen when an operation fails. For example, a playlist update should not silently be treated as successful if authorization expires or the API rejects the request. A live encoder’s restart behavior and a broadcast’s lifecycle need their own handling; the concat demuxer itself does not resolve those policies. Test the failure and recovery path for the exact workflow you are deploying.

- Files play with a gap or artifact at a transition: verify that the files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases; inspect effective durations and metadata; then test the sequence again.
- The next video does not appear in a YouTube playlist: confirm that the script used an authorized insert or update operation, targeted the intended playlist ID, and handled the API response rather than assuming the request succeeded.
- A playlist script runs out of quota: check the project’s current quota allocation, account for the documented method costs, and remove redundant list or insert calls.
- A multi-channel live setup reaches the wrong target: check the channel-specific stream resource, output destination, and credentials for each configured output.
- The stream stops when the media list ends: determine whether the intended behavior is to finish, restart, or continue with repeated media. A concat list does not by itself create a YouTube broadcast schedule.
