Apple’s standard computer-based restore does not roll an iPhone back to an older iOS release: it erases the device and installs the latest iOS. To bring back familiar apps, settings, and saved data, restore an iCloud or computer backup instead. That restores the contents saved in the backup, not the older operating system, and the backup may require a newer iOS version first.
Can you roll back an iOS update?
Not through Apple’s normal computer-based factory restore. That process erases the iPhone and installs the latest iOS, rather than returning it to the previous release. Apple describes installing an earlier iOS version as downgrading, but whether a particular older release is available for a specific iPhone is not established here. Do not erase your phone on the assumption that a standard restore will downgrade it. Apple’s factory-restore instructions explain what the computer restore does; Apple’s error guidance addresses attempts to install an earlier version.

Restore a familiar iPhone setup from a backup
A backup can return saved contents to an erased or newly set-up iPhone, but it does not reinstall the iOS version that was on the phone when the backup was made. Before erasing a working phone, make a current backup if possible, then check the date and size of the backup you intend to use. A computer backup may be encrypted; you will need its password to restore it. Apple notes that restoring a backup can require newer software than the iPhone currently has. Restore from iCloud
- Start with the iPhone at the Hello screen. If it is already set up, erase it before using this restore flow.
- Follow setup until Transfer Your Apps & Data, then choose From iCloud Backup.
- Sign in and select the backup you want, checking its date and size.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power. The setup progress bar is only part of the process; apps, photos, and other content may continue downloading afterward. Time depends on backup size and network speed.

Restore from a computer backup
- Connect the erased iPhone to the computer used to make the backup.
- Open Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on Windows, or iTunes in an applicable older or alternate setup, then select the iPhone.
- Choose Restore Backup, select the intended backup, and enter its password if it is encrypted.
- Keep the iPhone connected through the restore and sync.
Use Apple’s backup-restore guide for the computer workflow. Do not confuse Restore Backup, which copies saved contents onto the phone, with the computer’s factory Restore, which erases the phone and installs current software.
What if the backup needs a newer iOS?
If an iCloud backup cannot be restored because the iPhone’s software is too old, Apple’s prescribed sequence is to set up the iPhone without transferring data, update iOS, erase the iPhone, then set it up again and restore the backup. A computer backup can also fail when the installed software is too old. Apple’s restore guidance describes the compatibility issue, and its iCloud-backup instructions provide the update-and-retry sequence.

When to use recovery mode
Recovery mode is for troubleshooting an iPhone that will not start or is not recognized by a computer—not a shortcut to an older iOS. Apple lists symptoms such as an Apple logo that stays on screen without progress, a Connect to Computer screen, an unrecognized device, or Recovery Assistant repeatedly failing to start. Connect the iPhone to a computer, open Finder or Apple Devices, and follow Apple’s button sequence for the iPhone generation; the sequence differs for iPhone 8 and later, iPhone 7, and iPhone 6s and earlier.

When the computer offers Update or Restore, try Update first if it has not already been attempted. Update attempts to resolve the software problem without choosing the erase-and-reinstall option. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases data. See Apple’s recovery-mode instructions for the device-specific buttons and steps.

Choose the path that matches your goal

If data seems missing after restoration
Restoration cannot bring back information that was not included in the selected backup. Apple says missing items may also be synced separately, require signing in to an account, be unavailable for redownload, or come from a different device type. Check whether content is still downloading over Wi-Fi, and check another available backup before attempting another restore. Preserve the current data before trying again. Apple’s backup guidance and restore instructions explain these limitations.
Fix connection errors during a computer restore
For update or restore errors, Apple recommends checking the USB cable, port, and computer. Try the cable supplied with the iPhone or another Apple-certified cable compatible with both the iPhone and computer. A computer keyboard’s USB port may not supply enough power. A cable can address a connection problem; it cannot make an earlier iOS release installable. Follow Apple’s error troubleshooting steps.

One factory-restore detail: eSIM
Apple says restoring an iPhone to factory settings from a computer does not delete its eSIM. This does not change the distinction between factory Restore and restoring a backup: the former reinstalls current software, while the latter returns saved contents. See Apple’s factory-restore guidance.
