What File Formats Can You Use to Move a Blender Scene Into an AI Video Tool?

A Blender scene file is not automatically a usable input for an AI video tool. Scene formats such as USD, FBX, OBJ, and Alembic are for exchanging 3D data between compatible applications; AI video services commonly accept rendered images or videos instead. For a Runway-style workflow, render the scene in Blender, then upload an image or video that the specific tool and feature support.

Scene files and rendered media do different jobs

A Blender project or 3D interchange export can contain scene data for another 3D application to interpret. A rendered image or video is the visual output of that scene. An AI video service that accepts images or videos does not thereby accept the underlying Blender scene.

Blender’s manual describes formats including Alembic (ABC), USD, OBJ, FBX, PLY, and STL for importing and exporting. As the Blender Manual puts it, “Blender offers a wide range of file formats (e.g. ABC, USD, OBJ, FBX, PLY, STL, etc.) that can be used to import and export.” Those options are useful when the next step is a compatible 3D application, not as a guarantee of direct compatibility with an AI video service.

For an AI video tool, export a still or rendered clip

Render the Blender scene to media first, then choose a file type supported by the destination, model, and feature you plan to use. Runway provides a concrete example: its supported-file-types page lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP image extensions. For video, it lists MP4 with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, among other container and codec combinations. The page notes that ProRes support varies across models and features.

These are Runway’s documented options, not a universal specification for AI video products. Confirm the current requirements for your chosen tool and feature, including accepted format and codec, resolution, clip duration, and aspect ratio, before rendering.

If you need to transfer the 3D scene to another application

Choose a Blender export only after confirming that the receiving 3D application imports it and that the transfer covers the parts of the scene your project depends on. The extension alone does not guarantee that geometry, animation, materials, textures, cameras, lights, and scene structure will all carry over as expected.

Format or group When to consider it What to verify
USD Scene or animation exchange when the recipient supports USD. Check which scene features the exporter and importer preserve. Blender’s USD documentation says only perspective cameras are exported and notes that some USD composition concepts are not handled. See the Blender USD documentation.
Alembic (ABC) Scene or animation exchange when the receiving application supports Alembic. Verify how the recipient handles the geometry, animation, materials, and other required scene elements.
FBX or OBJ Use when the recipient supports the format and its transfer capabilities suit the project. Check geometry, animation, materials, camera and light handling, and whether textures must be packaged separately.
PLY or STL Consider when the recipient’s workflow calls for one of these formats. Confirm the specific data the receiving application can import; do not assume the file represents every part of a Blender scene.

Blender’s available export options and their behavior can vary by software version. Check the manual for your installed version as well as the destination application’s import documentation.

A reliable Blender-to-AI-video workflow

  1. Identify the destination and feature. Find the current documentation for the particular AI video tool, model, and operation you will use.
  2. Decide whether you need 3D data or visual output. If another 3D application needs to continue working with the scene, use an interchange format it supports. If an AI tool needs visual input, render a still or clip.
  3. Match the output to the destination’s specifications. For example, Runway lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP images and several video container/codec combinations, including MP4 with H.264. Its documentation also indicates that support can differ across models and features.
  4. Check the transfer or render before committing to the full job. For a 3D exchange, inspect representative scene elements in the receiving application. For an AI video upload, try a representative frame or short clip and confirm that the intended feature accepts it.

That short test is a practical precaution, not a guarantee of compatibility. Format support can differ by destination and feature, and successful import does not necessarily mean every scene element or setting transferred.
