Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For most Xiaomi phones, you cannot safely roll back a system update through an official, general-purpose procedure. Xiaomi’s support guidance says its smartphones do not support system rollback. If a HyperOS update causes trouble, the supported response is to restart the phone, manually download the latest package from the phone’s update screen, back up your data, and use a factory reset only as a last resort. If the problem remains, submit feedback through Settings and request help for your exact model, region, build and beta status.
Unlocking the bootloader and flashing an older ROM is not a routine Xiaomi rollback method. Xiaomi warns that those operations can weaken security, erase data, affect warranty or service, leave the phone unable to boot, or make it inoperable.

Can you downgrade a Xiaomi or HyperOS update?
Usually, no. Xiaomi’s general support FAQ states: “The Xiaomi smartphones do not support rollback of the system.” Xiaomi UK gives the same answer for OTA downgrades: “All of the smartphones don’t support rolling back the system version.” These statements are the safest starting point for a normal owner who wants to return from a new HyperOS or MIUI build to an older one.

That policy means there is no universal Settings command that restores the previous system version, and an older package downloaded from an unofficial source should not be treated as an approved solution. A phone model, sales region, carrier configuration or beta program can have its own service instructions, but a generic rollback guide cannot establish that an exception applies to your device.

The supported goal is therefore recovery from the problem, not reversal of the update. Xiaomi’s own sequence is deliberately conservative: restart first; reinstall the latest package from Settings if the symptom continues; back up and factory-reset only when necessary; then send feedback or obtain model-specific service.
The safe, supported troubleshooting sequence
| Step | What you do | Data-loss exposure | What it accomplishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Restart | Restart the phone and test the original symptom again. | None expected | Clears a transient post-update process or temporary fault. |
| 2. Download the latest package | Open Settings > About phone > Xiaomi HyperOS > three-dot menu > Download latest package. | Normally none, but keep the battery charged and do not interrupt an installation. | Reinstalls the newest package; it is not a downgrade. |
| 3. Factory reset | Back up important information, verify the backup, then use the phone’s factory-reset option. | High: local data is erased. | Removes user data and settings that may be conflicting with the updated system. |
| 4. Feedback or service | Submit feedback through Settings and contact Xiaomi support or an authorized service center with device details. | Depends on any service action; do not approve a wipe without a verified backup. | Moves the case to model-, region- and build-specific troubleshooting. |
Menu wording can vary by software version and region. If a label differs, use the equivalent HyperOS update page rather than selecting a random recovery or flashing option.
1. Restart and reproduce the problem
Restart the phone normally, wait for it to finish booting, and repeat the action that exposed the problem. Check whether the issue is persistent or occurred only once immediately after the update. Record useful observations such as whether the phone overheats while idle, reboots during a particular task, loses mobile service, or fails to open one application. This information will help support distinguish a temporary post-update condition from a repeatable software defect.
A restart is the least destructive action in Xiaomi’s sequence. It does not return the phone to the previous build and it cannot repair a confirmed incompatibility, but it can clear a process that did not close correctly during the update.
2. Download the latest package from Settings
If the symptom remains, Xiaomi directs users to manually download the latest package using this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Tap Xiaomi HyperOS.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Choose Download latest package and follow the on-screen instructions.
This action asks the phone to obtain and install the current package offered for that device. It can repair an incomplete or damaged update installation, but it does not install an older version. Do not interpret a successful reinstall as evidence that rollback is supported.
Use a reliable connection, keep the phone sufficiently charged, and leave it undisturbed while the package is verified and installed. If the option is missing, the label is different, or the download repeatedly fails, take a screenshot of the available update screen and include it in your feedback instead of searching for an unverified ROM.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Back up, then consider a factory reset
Xiaomi describes a factory reset as a last resort. A reset removes locally stored data and returns user settings to their initial state; it does not install the old operating system. Before selecting it, make sure the information you need exists somewhere other than the phone.
Use a backup destination that you can actually access after the reset. Depending on your setup, that may be Xiaomi or other cloud storage, a computer, or a local copy on an external SSD. The external drive is only a place to keep a backup; it is not a firmware-recovery tool.

4. Send feedback and seek exact-device support
If restarting, reinstalling the latest package and resetting do not resolve the problem, Xiaomi’s guidance is to submit feedback through Settings. Include the exact model name, sales region, current HyperOS or MIUI build number, date of the update, the steps that reproduce the fault, screenshots or recordings where useful, and whether the phone is enrolled in a beta program.
For a persistent or serious fault, contact Xiaomi support or an authorized after-sales service center. Availability and capabilities differ by country, and the generic FAQ does not establish that every center can downgrade every model. Ask what procedure is approved for your specific device before agreeing to a firmware operation or data wipe.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why unofficial bootloader unlocking and flashing are not a safe default
Online instructions often describe unlocking the bootloader, downloading an older ROM and flashing it with a computer. Xiaomi does not present that as a standard rollback path. Its flashing guidance warns that these operations can reduce system protections, expose personal data, cause data loss or boot failure, affect warranty or service, destabilize the phone and potentially render it inoperable. Xiaomi states: “Unlike standard technical support, these operations lack established procedures or methods due to their unique nature.”
Unlocking the bootloader can itself erase the phone’s stored data. A procedure that appears to work on one model or region may be unsafe on another because firmware packages, anti-rollback controls, partitions, carrier customizations and authentication requirements differ. A cable, flash utility or ROM file does not make an unsupported downgrade official.
- Security: unlocking can weaken protections designed to prevent unauthorized system changes.
- Privacy: an incorrect process can expose or erase stored information.
- Reliability: an incompatible image can leave the phone stuck at boot or unusable.
- Support: Xiaomi warns that warranty or service may be affected.
- Procedure uncertainty: Xiaomi says these operations lack established standard methods.
Only follow a flashing instruction when Xiaomi or an authorized service provider has confirmed that it applies to your exact model, region and build, and has explained the data and service consequences. Treat a community post or a file-hosting link as unverified unless official support has specifically directed you to it.
Risks of returning to older software
Even where a device-specific downgrade path exists, older software is not automatically safer. Xiaomi’s UK rollback FAQ warns that a previous operating system may contain security vulnerabilities or bugs fixed in later releases. It may receive less support from Xiaomi or application developers, and an incorrectly installed downgrade can brick the phone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That creates a trade-off: the older build might avoid a newly introduced behavior, but it can reintroduce a known security or stability defect. Ask support whether the suspected problem is fixed in a newer package before pursuing an older one. Do not assume that “older” means “more stable” for your particular model.
Back up correctly before any destructive step
A reset or bootloader unlock is only as safe as the backup you can restore. Perform the following checks before wiping the phone:
- List irreplaceable items: photos, videos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, notes, documents and locally stored application files.
- Confirm that synchronization has finished rather than assuming that an account is enabled.
- Copy important files to a computer, cloud location or external SSD when practical.
- Open the backup destination from another device or browser and verify that recent files are present and readable.
- Make sure you know the account credentials and recovery method needed after setup.
- Export information from applications that do not automatically synchronize.
- Record your current model, build and network settings so support can identify the original configuration.
Do not begin a factory reset merely because a backup screen reports completion. Verification matters: a backup that cannot be opened after the wipe does not protect the data.

Use the symptom to choose the next safe action
The phone is slow or warm immediately after updating
Restart first and observe whether the behavior repeats. If it continues, use Download latest package from the HyperOS update screen. Avoid jumping directly to a downgrade because the supported process is designed to repair the current installation before destructive measures are considered.
An application crashes while the rest of the phone works
Note the application name, the exact action that causes the crash and whether other applications behave normally. Include those details in feedback. A system rollback is not established by Xiaomi’s general FAQ, so do not erase the phone or flash an older build solely on the basis of one application failure without model-specific advice.
The phone repeatedly reboots or cannot complete startup
Do not repeatedly interrupt startup or experiment with random firmware files. If the phone can reach Settings, submit feedback and preserve a backup before any reset. If it cannot reach Settings, contact Xiaomi support or an authorized service center and explain that the failure began after the update. Ask for the approved recovery path for the exact model and region.
Mobile service, Wi-Fi or another hardware-related function fails
Record whether the failure affects one network, all networks or only a particular location. Capture the current build and radio-related symptoms for support. A generic OTA downgrade is not supported, and an unofficial flash can add a second fault to the original one.
The problem appeared on a beta build
Beta software can have a separate enrollment and exit process. Confirm with Xiaomi whether your device is on a beta track and what the supported exit method is. Do not infer that a public-release rollback instruction applies to a beta build, or that a beta exit will preserve local data.
What model-specific information support needs
“Xiaomi phone” is not enough information for a safe firmware decision. Prepare:
- Exact model and, if shown, the regional or carrier variant.
- Current HyperOS or MIUI version and full build number.
- Sales country or region and mobile carrier.
- Whether the bootloader is locked or already unlocked.
- Whether the phone is enrolled in a beta program.
- When the update installed and whether the installation completed normally.
- A precise symptom description, reproduction steps and any error text.
- What you already tried: restart, latest-package download, reset or other action.
These details prevent support from applying instructions intended for a different package or market. Policy, menu labels and service procedures can change, so check Xiaomi’s current support information immediately before taking action.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing repair with downgrade: downloading the latest package reinstalls the current release; it does not restore the previous one.
- Resetting without verification: a factory reset erases local data, so confirm the backup from another device first.
- Using a file for a similar model: similar names do not guarantee compatible firmware.
- Ignoring region and beta status: the same product family can have different builds and service rules.
- Unlocking before understanding the consequence: Xiaomi says unlocking erases stored data and can affect security and service.
- Trusting success stories as a guarantee: a procedure that worked for another owner is not a universal or established method.
- Repeating failed flashes: each attempt can increase the chance of boot failure or data loss.
When an authorized service center is the right choice
Use official support rather than self-flashing when the phone cannot boot, the update screen will not offer the latest package, the device is under warranty or service coverage, you need a beta exit, or the problem involves a region-specific build. Ask the center to state whether it is repairing the current installation, applying an approved recovery image or performing another operation. Confirm whether the procedure will erase data and provide the verified backup before handing over the device.
The generic Xiaomi FAQs do not publish a universal, model-by-model rollback procedure. A service center may have an exception or recovery route for a particular device, but that possibility must be confirmed for your phone rather than assumed from an internet guide.
For a typical owner, the safe answer remains straightforward: Xiaomi does not generally support rolling back the system. Restart, reinstall the latest package from Settings, back up before considering a factory reset, and escalate through feedback or model-specific service instead of treating bootloader unlocking and unofficial flashing as a routine downgrade.
