No. You can start with the Soulslike that interests you; finishing another game first is not a prerequisite. Familiarity may help you recognize broad conventions such as deliberate combat, timing and evasion, but each game has its own systems to learn. Choose based on the experience you want, then treat the game’s own instructions and tools as your guide.
What experience from another Soulslike can—and cannot—teach you
Playing one Soulslike can make some moments in another feel less unfamiliar. Bandai Namco describes Soulslike combat in terms of precise timing and evasion. Those are useful expectations to bring with you: you may need to watch an opponent, choose when to act and avoid attacks rather than assume every encounter is solved by pressing forward.

That is a starting mindset, not a universal set of controls or tactics. A genre label does not promise that two games use the same rhythm, movement, defensive options or way of handling a difficult fight. Even games from the same developer can differ substantially. Yasuhiro Kitao, FromSoftware’s marketing manager, described Sekiro’s battle system, setting, story, characters and mechanics as unique to that game in an interview published by Activision Games Blog on August 23, 2018.
In the same interview, Kitao said that players familiar with earlier FromSoftware titles might recognize a deliberate feel to combat and the satisfaction of overcoming intimidating opponents. Both observations matter: experience can provide context, but it cannot substitute for learning the game you have actually started. Notice what seems familiar, then check whether the new game asks you to respond differently.

Transfer the attitude, not an assumed solution
A practical way to carry experience over is to stay observant and adaptable. If a fight feels demanding, pay attention to its timing and look for the actions the current game makes available. Do not assume a technique, control habit or approach that worked in another title is appropriate here. The point is not to discard everything you know; it is to avoid treating another game’s rules as a manual for this one.
That advice works in both directions. A newcomer does not have to learn a whole genre before beginning, while a veteran should not expect familiarity to remove the need to learn. The first player can discover the conventions in context; the experienced player can use their expectations as a tentative guide and revise them when the game behaves differently.
Choose by the kind of experience you want
There is no source-backed universal “best first Soulslike.” A better question is what sounds appealing to you: a world that encourages exploration, a particular style of combat, stealth and traversal, or a more direct presentation of characters and story. The examples below show why a game can be a good fit for one person without being the objectively easiest choice for everyone.

If flexibility matters, consider what the game lets you do
Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring guidance is useful for a newcomer because it discusses options for dealing with obstacles, not because it promises a low difficulty level. If an enemy is too strong, the guidance describes avoiding it or taking a different route. Exploring can provide resources; spirit summons and, in some encounters, other players can provide help. These are examples of choices within that game—not features to assume every Soulslike offers.
Miyazaki made a similar point about pacing in a PlayStation.Blog interview dated January 28, 2022. He said he wanted new players to feel “unpressured” and able to approach Elden Ring at their own pace. He also described returning to something later when stuck, so players would have freedom of progression instead of repeatedly hitting the same wall. That supports a practical approach: a difficult moment does not necessarily mean you must keep attempting it immediately.
If you have a specific combat interest, follow it
Interest is a sound reason to begin with Sekiro, too. The official interview foregrounds stealth, traversal and sword combat, while also warning against expecting it to reproduce another FromSoftware title’s mechanics. A prior Soulslike might make its deliberate feel more recognizable, but Kitao’s description of its distinctive system is a reason to learn its own demands, not a promise that prior experience will make the game straightforward.

How to start without a genre checklist
You do not need to complete a preparatory game, memorize genre terminology or prove that you can handle a particular difficulty before beginning. Use the title you have chosen as the place to learn. The following sequence helps separate genuine learning from assumptions carried over from another game.
- Start with the game that interests you. Consider its world, combat style, exploration and story presentation. Do not choose solely because someone calls it the easiest entry point; the cited sources do not support a universal ranking.
- Pay attention to that game’s own explanations. Learn its controls and available actions from its in-game guidance. Prior experience can help you notice familiar ideas, but it cannot tell you how this particular game implements them.
- Observe before you commit to a habit. Treat timing and evasion as broad genre expectations, then see how the game’s encounters actually work. If an assumed approach is not working, reassess instead of repeating it because it worked elsewhere.
- When blocked, look for options the game itself provides. In Elden Ring, the cited official guidance includes changing routes, avoiding some threats, exploring, using spirit summons and summoning other players in some encounters. Do not assume those exact options exist in another title.
- Decide whether you want to persist now or return later. Miyazaki’s advice about Elden Ring supports leaving a difficult situation and revisiting it rather than feeling obliged to keep attempting it in the same session. It does not mean every game has the same progression structure.
- For a sequel, check story continuity separately. Genre membership alone does not establish a shared universe or a play order. If following a particular series’ plot matters to you, verify that series’ official guidance about its story sequence.
Does the story require playing earlier games first?
Not just because a game is a Soulslike. The genre label does not establish that every entry belongs to one connected story, and there is no basis here for recommending a chronological playthrough across the genre. Narrative order is a question about the specific series and sequel, not a general entry requirement.
If you are starting a direct sequel and want to understand returning characters or events, check that series’ official description or guidance. The sources cited here do not establish story-order requirements for every Soulslike, so a blanket rule would risk treating unrelated games as if they shared a continuity.

Story style can still help you choose among games. Miyazaki characterized Sekiro’s narrative and character stories as more direct than earlier Soulslike titles, while describing Elden Ring’s story as fragmented. These are distinctions between those examples, not a guarantee about how much any particular player will enjoy either story or a complete description of every game in the genre.

“I should learn the genre before I spend time on a new game.”
That turns optional familiarity into a prerequisite. Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring guidance explicitly addresses people who have never tried a Souls series game and discusses tools and options available to them. It supports the conclusion that a newcomer can begin, not that Elden Ring is the easiest entry for every person.

Prior experience may make deliberate combat or the challenge of a difficult opponent feel familiar, as Kitao noted about Sekiro. It does not teach every new game’s specific mechanics. Treat the new title as its own ruleset and be prepared to adjust.

That is not the only approach described for Elden Ring. Its official guidance includes avoiding some strong enemies, taking another route, exploring and using assistance. Miyazaki also spoke about returning to a difficult situation later. These are game-specific options, but they show why being stuck need not automatically mean repeating the same attempt indefinitely.
“There must be one correct first game for everyone.”
The available official descriptions point to different appeals—Elden Ring’s open-ended exploration and flexible approaches to obstacles, and Sekiro’s stealth, traversal and distinctive sword-combat system. They do not provide comparative completion rates, newcomer success data or a difficulty ranking. Your interests are a more defensible starting point than an unsupported universal verdict.
The useful rule to carry into your first session
Start with the game you want to play, not with a genre assignment. Bring curiosity and patience, but let that game teach you its own timing, mechanics and available paths. Another Soulslike can give you context; it is neither a ticket you must earn before starting nor a guarantee that the next one will work the same way.
