Neither is universally better. Use direct code search when you know a symbol, string, error, endpoint, or file and need to inspect the exact matches. Use an AI coding assistant when you need a plain-language explanation assembled from several files. For difficult repository questions, the most reliable workflow is sequential: search first, ask the assistant to explain the relevant code, then verify every important claim against the files and tests.
The short answer: match the tool to the question
“Where is this defined?” and “How does this behavior work across the project?” are different questions. A search result can answer the first with a file path and line; an assistant can help answer the second by connecting definitions, callers, configuration, and documentation.

The distinction is becoming less absolute. Agentic search products can accept natural-language questions, search a repository, navigate code relationships, and return the searches and files used to form an answer. Sourcegraph describes this model in its Deep Search documentation. The practical choice is often between an inspectable search-led interaction and an assistant-led search-and-synthesis interaction.
What direct code search does well
Exact discovery
Lexical search is the fastest way to locate a known token. Search for a function name, class, environment variable, route, SQL fragment, log message, or error text. The result set lets you distinguish declarations from imports, tests, generated files, and comments instead of accepting a single guessed answer.

Evidence you can inspect
A useful search interface provides file paths, matching lines, surrounding context, and navigation to definitions or references. That trail is valuable during review: another developer can reproduce the query and see why you concluded that a particular implementation matters.
Repository exploration
When a codebase is unfamiliar, start with broad terms, then narrow by language, directory, branch, or file type. Follow references from the first credible match. Code navigation can reveal callers and definitions that a plain text search would miss, while repository search helps you discover configuration and documentation that influence behavior.
Where search alone becomes laborious
Search returns evidence, not an explanation. You may need to open a controller, service, feature flag, serializer, and test before you can state how a request behaves. If the question spans many files, manually stitching those relationships can be slower and easier to misread than asking an assistant to produce a map that you then verify.

Natural-language synthesis
An assistant accepts a question such as, “What happens after a failed payment webhook, and which setting controls retries?” It can retrieve or receive relevant files, summarize the control flow, and point you to components that deserve inspection. Sourcegraph says Cody answers code questions by searching a codebase and retrieving context relevant to the question; its documentation is a vendor description, not an independent accuracy test. Cross-file relationships
The useful output is not merely a paragraph. Ask the assistant to name the entry point, each function it calls, relevant configuration keys, and the tests that exercise the path. A good answer reduces the number of files you must open first, while the file list lets you confirm whether the model followed the right branch and current revision.
Context depends on the product and surface
Context may come from selected text, the active editor file, an entire workspace, indexed repositories, previous messages, or connected web sources. GitHub says its IDE chat can use the active document, selection, and workspace information; its GitHub.com chat can use prior prompts, open pages, and retrieved codebase or Bing context. Details vary by plan and environment, so check the current GitHub Copilot product page before relying on a capability.
Where an assistant can mislead
Synthesis can hide an omitted file, stale branch, misunderstood feature flag, or confidently inferred behavior. Treat the answer as a hypothesis. Require paths, symbols, and line-level or test references; then open those files and verify the control flow. An explanation without inspectable sources is especially risky for authorization, migrations, billing, data retention, and incident response.

A practical workflow that combines both
- Define the answer you need. Write whether you are locating an implementation, tracing behavior, explaining an error, or checking a consequence. This determines whether exact search or synthesis should lead.
- Search for an anchor. Query the distinctive symbol, literal error, route, event name, or configuration key. Inspect several matches and note the branch, repository, and revision.
- Expand through navigation. Follow definitions, references, callers, tests, and configuration. Exclude generated or vendored code unless it is part of the runtime path.
- Ask the assistant with bounded context. Include the question, the suspected entry point, and the paths you found. Ask it to cite every claim with a file and symbol, list uncertainty, and distinguish observed code from inference.
- Check the returned source list. Confirm that the assistant searched the repository and branch you care about and that it actually used the files it names. Sourcegraph’s Deep Search documentation describes a result that lists searches and files contributing to the answer; comparable visibility is a useful selection criterion.
- Verify the explanation. Read the relevant implementation, configuration, and tests. Check conditional branches, default values, error handling, and feature flags. If the claim affects a change, run the focused tests or reproduce the behavior.
- Record the conclusion. Keep the query, revision, paths, and test result in the issue or pull request so someone else can audit the answer later.
Decision guide by question type
“Where is this symbol or string used?”
Use direct search first. Search exact and case-sensitive variants, then inspect definitions and references. An assistant can suggest related terms if the initial query misses aliases, but do not let its suggested location replace checking the result set.
“Why does this request behave this way?”
Begin with the route, handler, or log message. After collecting the relevant files, ask an assistant for a step-by-step trace that includes middleware, service calls, configuration, and tests. Verify each transition; a model may describe the normal path while overlooking an early return or feature flag.
“Which component owns this behavior?”
Search for the public interface and follow callers and implementations. An assistant is useful for comparing candidate components and explaining boundaries, but ownership is established by the code and build configuration.
“What changed between branches or releases?”
Use version-control diff and search to establish the change set. An assistant can summarize the impact after you provide the relevant diff, but it may not know about uncommitted files, a different branch, or generated artifacts unless those are in its context.
“Can we safely change this?”
Prefer source, tests, configuration, and runtime evidence. Ask an assistant to produce a checklist of affected callers and tests, then validate that checklist manually. Do not approve a migration, permission change, or security fix on the basis of generated prose alone.
Criteria for choosing a search-led or assistant-led workflow

These criteria matter more than a generic “AI versus search” label. A search tool with strong navigation may answer a broad question better than an assistant with a stale or narrow index. Conversely, an assistant with current workspace context may be more efficient than a developer manually opening dozens of files.

GitHub Copilot

Sourcegraph Cody and Deep Search
Sourcegraph documents Cody as retrieving relevant codebase context and showing which files it read at sourcegraph.com/docs/cody/capabilities/chat. Its Deep Search documentation describes an agentic code-search workflow that uses Code Search and Code Navigation and returns searches and files contributing to an answer.
The documentation says Deep Search is available on the web for Enterprise Starter and Enterprise plans and is not supported for BYOK customers. Eligibility and packaging can change; check the current documentation and your organization’s contract rather than assuming those conditions still apply.
Security, privacy, and governance questions
Before connecting an assistant or index to a repository, identify exactly what can leave your environment. Consider source files, prompts, editor selections, issue text, logs, secrets accidentally present in configuration, and retrieved web content. Confirm retention, training use, administrator controls, regional processing, subprocessors, audit logs, and deletion procedures for the specific plan.
Limit context to what the question requires. Redact credentials and personal data, use a sanitized reproduction for sensitive incidents, and restrict indexing to approved repositories. Make branch and permission boundaries explicit: an answer based on a public mirror or default branch may be wrong for a private release branch.

For regulated or security-sensitive work, keep a human review step and an auditable record of the source files and revision used. Search results and test output are evidence; the assistant’s wording is an interpretation of that evidence.

The assistant cites a file that does not contain the claimed behavior
Open the path and symbol, then ask for the exact excerpt or line range. If the claim cannot be tied to code, label it an inference and search for the actual implementation.

The answer ignores a feature flag or configuration default
Search for the flag name, environment variable, and configuration loader separately. Check defaults in code, deployment manifests, and tests; ask the assistant to compare enabled and disabled paths.
Search returns too many matches
Quote distinctive strings, add directory or language filters, exclude generated and dependency directories, and search references after locating the definition. Then provide the narrowed paths to the assistant.

Compare the indexed revision with the checkout or pull request. For uncommitted changes, use the editor’s workspace context or local search and tell the assistant which files changed.
The tool cannot access a needed repository
Check permissions, repository inclusion, branch selection, and organization policies. Do not infer that an absent result means the symbol does not exist; it may simply be outside the tool’s scope.
The response sounds certain but conflicts with tests
Trust the executable evidence first. Re-run the focused test, inspect fixtures and mocks, and update the prompt with the contradiction. Preserve the discrepancy in the review record so the mistaken explanation is not reused.
What current evidence can—and cannot—tell you
There is no established controlled, independent benchmark in the cited material that compares direct code search with AI-assistant answers for repository-question accuracy, time-to-answer, or developer productivity. Vendor documentation demonstrates features and context visibility, not a universal ranking.

Use that distinction when evaluating claims. A tool may generate accepted code in one setting and still give an incomplete explanation of your repository. Measure your own workflow with representative questions, recording source coverage, verification time, correction rate, and the cost of mistakes.
A lightweight team standard
- Search first for known symbols, strings, routes, errors, and configuration keys.
- For broad questions, provide the assistant with the suspected entry points and ask for file-and-symbol citations.
- Require the assistant to state repository, branch, revision, and uncertainty when those are available.
- Verify behavior-affecting claims against implementation and tests before merging or changing production configuration.
- Do not paste secrets or restricted data; follow the approved plan and organization policy.
- Save useful queries and source paths in the issue or pull request for repeatability.
Bottom line for developers
Choose direct code search for precision and inspection; choose an AI coding assistant for explanation and cross-file synthesis. The dependable answer-finding method is not a winner-takes-all choice: locate the evidence, ask for a structured explanation, and verify it against the current source and tests. Evaluate products by scope, freshness, traceability, reasoning across files, governance, workflow fit, and cost—not by marketing claims or unrelated coding-agent benchmarks.
