Does Faster Memory Improve Steam Deck Performance? What Benchmarks Can Tell You

The Steam Deck OLED has faster listed memory than the LCD, but FPS depends on the whole device and workload. Here is how to interpret the specs and benchmarks.

Sometimes—but the Steam Deck OLED’s faster listed memory does not guarantee higher frame rates. Valve lists the OLED’s 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 at 6400 MT/s, while GamersNexus lists the LCD model at 5500 MT/s. Faster memory can help when a game is constrained by memory bandwidth, but an OLED-versus-LCD benchmark compares two complete devices, not memory speed in isolation. Their APUs and displays differ too, so a measured gap cannot automatically be credited to RAM.

What is different about the OLED and LCD memory?

The Steam Deck OLED and original LCD model both have 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, but their listed transfer rates differ. Valve’s current technical specifications list the OLED at 6400 MT/s across quad 32-bit channels. GamersNexus lists the LCD model at 5500 MT/s. These figures describe memory configurations; they are not frame-rate measurements.

Model Memory capacity and type Listed transfer rate Channel configuration in the cited specifications
Steam Deck LCD 16 GB LPDDR5 5500 MT/s (GamersNexus, 2023) Not stated in the cited GamersNexus material
Steam Deck OLED 16 GB LPDDR5 6400 MT/s (Valve’s current technical specifications) Quad 32-bit channels (Valve)

MT/s means millions of transfers per second. It describes the rate at which data can be transferred, not how many frames a game will render each second. A higher transfer rate can increase available memory bandwidth, but actual performance also depends on whether a particular workload needs more bandwidth and whether another part of the system is the limiting factor. Transfer rate is also not the same thing as memory capacity: both models have the same 16 GB capacity, so the OLED’s listed advantage is speed, not extra room for game data.

The Deck uses unified memory rather than separate system RAM and a dedicated graphics-memory card. Valve describes 16 GB of unified memory, with one gigabyte dedicated for GPU use and workload-dependent GPU access up to 8 GB. The GPU and CPU therefore draw on the same onboard memory pool. This makes memory bandwidth relevant to graphics workloads, but it does not mean every game is limited by it. An allocation can change with the workload, and the amount available to the GPU should not be confused with a fixed graphics card memory specification.

When can faster memory improve game performance?

When the workload is bandwidth-limited

A game can benefit if its CPU or GPU is waiting for data to move between memory and the processor. Faster memory may reduce that bottleneck, which can allow more work to be completed in a given time. An integrated GPU shares system memory, so bandwidth is one of the factors that can affect its performance.

Bandwidth-sensitive behavior is most plausible when the graphics processor is moving large amounts of texture, geometry, or framebuffer data and is otherwise capable of doing more work. That does not make every visually demanding game bandwidth-limited, however. A title can be graphically intensive because of shader or compute work while still seeing little change from a faster transfer rate. The only reliable way to distinguish those cases is to measure the relevant workload.

That is a conditional mechanism, not a prediction of a specific FPS uplift. The memory specification alone cannot show how often a game waits for memory, or whether faster transfers would meaningfully change the result. A game with a memory-sensitive workload may respond differently from one whose main constraint lies elsewhere.

When another limit dominates

If performance is instead limited by CPU work, GPU compute, power, software behavior, or a frame-rate cap, faster memory may make little or no visible difference. A frame cap, for example, can hold the displayed rate at its set limit even if the hardware could produce frames more quickly. Likewise, a memory improvement need not resolve a bottleneck located in a different part of the system.

Power and temperature can obscure a small memory effect. A test that begins before both devices reach similar operating temperatures may capture different boost or thermal behavior rather than a memory advantage. Software updates, Proton versions, and game patches can also change performance independently of hardware. These are reasons to treat a benchmark number as a result for a defined setup, not as a permanent property of the model.

That is why “6400 MT/s versus 5500 MT/s” cannot be translated into a percentage increase in FPS. The rate difference is a hardware specification, while FPS is an outcome produced by the whole device running a particular game under particular conditions.

Is the OLED faster than the LCD?

A comparison of the two retail models can answer whether one model performed better in a particular test. It cannot, by itself, establish that faster memory caused the difference. The OLED also uses a 6 nm APU, compared with the LCD model’s 7 nm APU, and the devices differ in display and other hardware details. Both use Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU families, but shared architecture does not make the rest of the comparison identical.

The display difference is especially important when interpreting responsiveness results. Refresh behavior and the path from rendering to displayed output are part of end-to-end latency. A result that favors one complete device may reflect that pipeline, the APU, software, or several factors together. It should not be reduced to a statement that its memory is faster, therefore its games are faster.

To attribute a result specifically to memory speed, a test needs to change memory speed while holding the rest of the system and test conditions constant, or otherwise credibly isolate that variable. The available OLED-versus-LCD comparisons do not do that. No verified general FPS gain caused only by the Steam Deck’s memory-speed difference is established by the sources covered here.

When reading a benchmark, keep the claim aligned with what was measured. “The OLED achieved a higher average in this game and test setup” may be supported by a direct comparison. “The faster RAM increased performance by this amount” needs evidence that isolates RAM rather than comparing whole devices.

How to compare benchmarks fairly

A useful comparison starts by making the two test runs as alike as possible. Small differences in settings, software, scene, or device state can complicate a result. Record the conditions rather than relying on a headline number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Match the workload. Use the same game build, scene or repeatable sequence, resolution, graphics settings, and frame cap on both devices. A benchmark in one game does not establish the same effect in another workload.
  2. Match software conditions. Record SteamOS and Proton versions, and keep them consistent where possible. Notebookcheck says it left the operating system unmodified and used native Linux programs where available; that describes its testing approach, not a guarantee that other tests used the same environment.
  3. Keep power conditions comparable. Record power limits, power state, and whether each device is charging. Valve says it expects available APU performance to be the same on battery and while plugged in, but recording power state still helps make results repeatable and interpretable.
  4. Repeat runs. Run each test several times after temperatures stabilize. Report the spread or consistency of results as well as a single number; a one-off result is less useful for judging a small difference.
  5. Report more than average FPS. Include 1% lows or frame-time plots where available. An average can conceal intermittent slow frames, while frame-time consistency helps show whether a game feels smooth throughout the test.
  6. Document the device and conditions. Note the exact model, operating system and game versions, graphics settings, power settings, temperature, charging status, and test scene. Without these details, readers cannot tell how closely the result applies to their own setup.

For a stronger memory-specific claim, the test design must also isolate the memory variable. A standard retail comparison between LCD and OLED is useful for a buyer choosing between those complete models, but it is not a controlled experiment on RAM speed alone.

How to read averages, lows and frame times

Average FPS is a useful summary, but it can hide brief stalls. Two runs can have similar averages while one has more noticeable slow frames. A 1% low summarizes the slower portion of a run, and a frame-time plot shows when those slow frames occurred. Neither metric proves a memory cause, but together they provide a better description of playability than an average alone.

Small differences should also be viewed against run-to-run variation. If repeated runs overlap substantially, a single higher result may not be meaningful. Reporting sample count, spread, and stabilized temperatures lets readers judge whether the observed gap is larger than normal test noise.

What does the published latency comparison show?

GamersNexus reported an end-to-end latency test in Hollow Knight. Its stated conditions were 720p fullscreen, disabled frame caps, VSync off, default particle and blur settings, and 100 samples per device. After accounting for the game animation’s fixed delay, it reported 16.7 ms for OLED and 20.9 ms for LCD.

Those numbers describe the complete device and test pipeline, not a pure memory-speed benchmark. Display refresh and other system behavior differ between models, so this result cannot prove that the OLED’s faster memory caused lower latency. Latency and frame rate are also different measurements: a latency result should not be presented as an FPS gain.

The careful conclusion is therefore limited: under the documented Hollow Knight test, the OLED produced the lower measured end-to-end latency. That is useful information for someone comparing the two handhelds, but it does not isolate which component produced the difference or predict the latency of every game.

What to check before drawing a conclusion

Use these questions to judge whether a benchmark supports the claim being made:

  • Which specification is being compared? Check capacity, memory generation, transfer rate, and channel configuration rather than treating “faster RAM” as a complete description.
  • What else changed? Consider APU process and clocks, cooling, power limits, and display refresh rate. A difference between retail models may have more than one cause.
  • What kind of workload was tested? GPU-heavy games, CPU-heavy scenes, and memory-sensitive workloads may respond differently.
  • What did the test measure? Average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, and latency answer related but distinct questions.
  • Were the conditions controlled and repeatable? Resolution, settings, frame cap, software versions, temperature, power state, and repeated runs all affect how confidently a result can be interpreted.
  • Is the claim broader than the test? A result from one game, scene, or operating-system configuration should not be presented as a universal advantage for every title.

Can you upgrade the Steam Deck’s memory?

The cited specifications describe the memory as onboard; they do not support treating it like a standard user-installed RAM kit or recommending an aftermarket RAM upgrade. A microSD card or SSD expands storage, not system-memory speed, so adding storage does not address a memory-bandwidth limit.

That distinction matters when shopping. The OLED is the model with the higher listed transfer rate, but it is a complete handheld rather than an LCD accessory or drop-in memory module. A buyer deciding between retail models should compare the whole devices and the workloads they care about, not assume that buying storage or another accessory will reproduce the OLED’s memory configuration.

If you are comparing the OLED and LCD for a purchase, regard the OLED as a different complete handheld with a higher listed memory transfer rate—not as an LCD model with a simple RAM upgrade. The available evidence supports the specification difference and explains why it could matter in bandwidth-limited workloads; it does not establish a universal FPS advantage attributable to memory alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Steam Deck OLED’s 6400 MT/s memory make every game faster?

No. It provides a higher listed transfer rate than the LCD model’s 5500 MT/s, but FPS also depends on CPU work, GPU compute, power, software, frame caps and the specific game workload.

Is the OLED faster only because of its RAM?

No conclusion that strong is supported. The OLED also uses a 6 nm APU instead of the LCD’s 7 nm APU and differs in display and other hardware, so a whole-device benchmark cannot isolate memory speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should a fair OLED-versus-LCD benchmark control?

Use identical game builds, scenes, resolution, graphics settings, frame caps, SteamOS and Proton versions where possible, comparable power states, and stabilized temperatures. Repeat runs and report averages with 1% lows or frame-time data.

Does lower latency prove faster memory?

No. GamersNexus measured 16.7 ms for OLED and 20.9 ms for LCD in a specific Hollow Knight test, but those are complete-device end-to-end results affected by the display and system pipeline, not isolated RAM measurements.

Can I install faster RAM in an LCD Steam Deck?

The cited specifications identify the memory as onboard and do not support recommending a standard user-installed RAM kit. A microSD card or SSD adds storage and does not increase system-memory speed.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The OLED’s 6400 MT/s LPDDR5 has more bandwidth on paper than the LCD’s listed 5500 MT/s, which can help bandwidth-limited workloads. But OLED-versus-LCD benchmarks compare complete systems with different APUs, displays and other conditions. They can show how the retail models perform in a defined test, not a universal FPS gain caused by memory speed alone.
