If your PC became unstable after a Windows update, first identify the update and the exact symptom, then try uninstalling that update—not replacing the SSD. A problem that starts after an update may be software-related, but timing alone does not prove Windows caused physical SSD damage or that the drive is failing. Back up important files before using recovery options that can affect data.
Before you roll back: record the problem and update
Note what is happening (for example, freezes, errors, or failed starts) and when it began. In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history to review recent updates. The history can help you identify a likely candidate; it does not establish that the update caused an SSD hardware fault.

Microsoft’s documented first rollback route for a problem that began after a regular update is Uninstall Updates. Microsoft says this may resolve issues, but some updates cannot be removed.

- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the recent update that matches the timing of the problem.
- Open Uninstall updates in the related settings area.
- Select the suspected update and choose Uninstall. If it is not listed or Windows will not allow removal, use the recovery guidance below rather than assuming the SSD is defective.
- Restart the PC and observe whether the same symptom returns. This is a troubleshooting check, not a controlled test or proof of SSD health.
If the update is a security update, consider the security risk before removing it. Microsoft advises understanding those risks; seek a corrected update or guidance from Microsoft or the PC maker rather than leaving a known vulnerability unaddressed indefinitely.

If Windows will not boot
Use Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) to reach the update-removal option. If Windows is still accessible, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. Windows RE may also appear after repeated failed starts, or you can boot from recovery or Windows installation media and select Repair my PC.
- In Windows RE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the available option to remove the latest quality or feature update, as appropriate. Wording and availability can vary by Windows version.
- Follow the prompts, then restart and check whether the original symptom persists.
If device encryption is enabled, have the BitLocker recovery key available before entering recovery options. See Microsoft’s guides to Windows recovery environment and uninstalling a Windows Update.

Choose the right kind of rollback
Uninstalling an update and going back to a previous Windows version are different actions. Use Uninstall Updates for a regular quality update; use Go back only when the problem followed an upgrade to a new Windows version.

Microsoft says Go back is generally available for 10 days after an upgrade, provided the required windows.old and $windows.~bt folders remain. It keeps personal files but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade. Check availability and the expected effects on your device before proceeding.

Try Safe Mode to investigate software or drivers
From Windows RE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select a Safe Mode option. Microsoft explains that if the problem does not occur in Safe Mode, default settings, basic device drivers, and services can be ruled out as possible causes. That can help narrow software or driver involvement; it does not establish that the SSD is healthy. See Windows startup settings.
Consider a current-version repair reinstall on eligible Windows 11 PCs
Windows 11 offers Fix problems using Windows Update on eligible PCs. This reinstalls the current version of Windows to repair system files and components while preserving personal files, apps, and settings. It is a repair—not a downgrade. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet during the process. Microsoft’s current-version reinstall guidance describes availability and how to use it.

Use System Restore, reset, or installation media cautiously
Restore options can reverse broader changes, and their impact on files depends on the specific option. Read the prompts and back up important data before proceeding. Resetting Windows or reinstalling from installation media is more disruptive; Microsoft warns that the described installation-media path removes everything. Use manufacturer-specific recovery media where hardware-specific drivers matter. See Microsoft’s recovery options overview and Windows RE guidance.
When to investigate the SSD separately
The available Microsoft recovery guidance explains how to remove updates and repair or restore Windows; it does not prove that a particular update causes physical SSD instability or diagnose a failing drive. If symptoms continue after Windows recovery, or you see evidence suggesting a hardware problem, consult the PC or SSD manufacturer for diagnostics specific to your device. Avoid treating the timing of the update as a hardware diagnosis.
