Ordinary Windows updates are not generally established as a cause of physical SSD damage. If an SSD develops problems after an update, the timing is worth investigating, but it does not prove the update damaged the drive. Windows updates, Windows-delivered device drivers, and SSD firmware updates are different kinds of changes, with different risks.
What kind of update could be involved?
Windows can install operating-system updates and, in some cases, device-driver updates. A driver is software that helps Windows communicate with hardware; Microsoft says Windows can automatically download and install driver updates. A driver problem can affect how a device behaves without demonstrating that the SSD’s flash memory was physically damaged. See Microsoft’s driver update guidance.

SSD firmware is separate, drive-specific software. Updating it is a maintenance operation for a particular model, not the same thing as installing an ordinary Windows update. Microsoft’s drive-firmware guidance is written for Windows Server releases and warns that firmware on unsupported hardware can affect reliability and stability or cause data loss. Check the exact drive’s support page and release notes before considering firmware changes: Microsoft Learn: Updating drive firmware.
Can Windows Update wear out an SSD?
Writing, erasing, and rewriting data contributes to flash-cell wear. SSDs use wear-leveling to distribute writes, and manufacturers describe endurance using measures such as terabytes written (TBW). However, the available endurance guidance does not quantify how much data a typical Windows update writes or what share of an SSD’s rated endurance that represents. It would be inaccurate to claim either that updates have no effect on wear or that routine updates substantially wear out an SSD. See SanDisk’s SSD endurance and wear guidance.

How to respond if a problem appears after an update
- Back up files you can still access. Copy important data to a separate drive before invasive troubleshooting or firmware maintenance. Samsung recommends backing up to another drive before its firmware process; that is prudent protection, not a guarantee against failure.
- Record the details. Note the Windows version, update identifier and installation date, SSD make and model, and any recent driver or firmware changes. These details help the PC or drive maker assess the specific configuration.
- Use Windows Update troubleshooting for update errors. Microsoft lists possible update issues including interrupted or incomplete installations, corrupted or missing update files, insufficient storage space, and incompatible drivers. Its guidance covers checking free space and update status, restarting, and consulting the hardware maker for third-party driver instructions. Follow the current steps at Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting page.
- Check drive-specific support before changing firmware. Confirm the exact SSD model and use the maker’s instructions and release notes. Samsung says its firmware installation does not affect data stored on the drive, but still strongly recommends a backup and says not to turn off power during the process. That advice applies to Samsung’s process; it is not a guarantee for every SSD or firmware utility. See Samsung’s SSD firmware FAQ.
- Escalate based on symptoms and evidence. If the drive disappears, reports errors, or files become inaccessible, use the PC or SSD maker’s model-specific support. Do not assume that reinstalling Windows, updating firmware, or replacing the SSD is always the correct fix.
What the timing does—and does not—tell you
A fault noticed after an update may be connected to a software or driver change, or may have another cause. Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guidance identifies software and installation problems; it does not establish that those failures physically damage SSDs. The reviewed official guidance does not provide a population-level rate of SSD failures caused by Windows updates, so timing alone cannot establish causation.
