Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your Windows 11 PC became slow or unstable after an update, first identify whether it was a regular quality update or an upgrade to a new Windows version. Uninstall a quality update from Update history; use Go back to reverse a version upgrade, if that option and its rollback files are still available. Neither option guarantees a performance fix, but each can help determine whether the recent software change is involved.
Before you start: identify the update and protect your files
Microsoft separates recovery into two common starting points: “My PC starts, but something isn’t right” and “My PC won’t start or is in a restart loop.” The steps also depend on what changed: a regular update is different from an upgrade to a newer Windows version.
- Back up important files before using recovery options.
- If Windows is encrypted with BitLocker, locate your recovery key. WinRE recovery options may require it.
- Note when the slowdown began and whether it followed a quality update or a Windows version upgrade. Removing an update reverses software changes; it does not prove the update caused the issue or rule out an app, driver, or hardware problem.
For Microsoft’s recovery overview and preparation guidance, see Recovery options in Windows.
Uninstall a regular Windows update
If Windows still starts
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
- Find the update that matches when the problem began, select Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC and check whether performance or stability changes.
Microsoft says uninstalling an update does not affect personal files or apps, but it does undo changes made by that update. Some updates cannot be uninstalled. See How to uninstall a Windows Update.

If Windows will not start
- Enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). The exact way to reach it depends on the device and whether Windows can start; use Microsoft’s recovery instructions for the available method.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the option to uninstall the latest quality update and follow the prompts.
Some updates cannot be removed, and an encrypted device may ask for its BitLocker recovery key.
Use Go back after a Windows version upgrade
If the slowdown began after upgrading to a new Windows version, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back, if available. Microsoft says this option is usually available for 10 days after an upgrade; the rollback files must also remain on the device. If the option is missing, its time window or required files may no longer be available. Details are in Go back to the previous version of Windows.

Going back keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then. Keep the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders until the rollback is complete. If you added user accounts after upgrading, Microsoft says they may need to be removed; if you used a USB drive to upgrade, you may need it for the rollback.
If rollback is unavailable or does not fix the problem
Microsoft’s recovery guidance favors less disruptive options before resetting or reinstalling Windows. Availability depends on the Windows version and device setup, and the options do not all affect the PC in the same way.

| Option | What it does | What it changes or requires |
|---|---|---|
| Fix problems using Windows Update | Reinstalls the current Windows version as a repair option. | For Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, Microsoft says it keeps files, apps, and settings. Follow Microsoft’s current-version reinstall instructions to check availability. |
| Point-in-time restore | Returns the PC to an earlier state, where the feature is available. | Changes made after the selected point are lost. See Point-in-time restore for Windows. |
| System Restore | Rolls back system files and settings. | Microsoft says it does not affect personal files. Availability and ways to start it are described in System Restore. |
Check the current instructions for your device before choosing a restore option. If none of the supported recovery choices resolves the issue, Microsoft’s recovery overview covers more disruptive reset and reinstall routes.

When the PC is working, you can create a Windows recovery drive as a fallback. It is optional: a USB drive is not needed for the ordinary update-uninstall or Go back steps. Microsoft’s recovery overview explains recovery media; it does not specify a drive capacity or model in that guidance.
