If a device began misbehaving after a driver update, use Device Manager to restore that device’s previous driver: open its Properties, select Driver, choose Roll Back Driver, then follow the prompts. You need an administrator account, and the option appears only when Windows has a previous driver available.
Roll back the affected device’s driver
- Save open work. Search for Device Manager from Start or the taskbar and open it with an administrator account.
- Expand the category containing the affected device. Common examples include Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Bluetooth.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason if prompted, confirm the rollback, and restart if Windows asks you to.
This reverses the driver for the selected device, rather than undoing every recent change to Windows. Microsoft’s general [Device Manager driver guidance] recommends rollback when an issue follows a recent driver update, including one installed through Windows Update.

Why “Roll Back Driver” may be unavailable
Windows shows the control only if a previous version of that device’s driver is available. If the button is missing or disabled, there is no prior driver version for Windows to restore through this option. For a compatible replacement or older driver, check the computer or device manufacturer’s support site; Microsoft advises against downloading drivers from unrelated third-party sites. See Microsoft’s [audio] and [display] troubleshooting guidance for device-specific context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUninstalling the device and restarting is a different action. Windows may attempt to reinstall a driver after the restart, but that does not select a known previous version. Microsoft describes this as an option for display-driver troubleshooting in its [display guidance].

Choose the recovery path that matches the change
| What you want to undo | Use this route | What it depends on or affects |
|---|---|---|
| One device’s recent driver change | Device Manager > device Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver | A previous driver for that device must be available. |
| A broader Windows update | Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates | Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Removing a security update can affect your device’s protection. Microsoft documents this route in its Windows Update removal guidance. |
| Recent system changes, possibly including a driver update | System Restore | A suitable restore point must exist. Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs represented by that point; Microsoft says personal files are not affected. Details are in Microsoft’s System Restore guidance. |
If Windows will not start normally
When Windows cannot be accessed, Microsoft documents an update-removal route through Windows Recovery Environment. It is for uninstalling a Windows update, not for rolling back one selected device driver. The available options depend on the update and recovery environment; see [Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling updates].
