To revoke a token approval, use a wallet approval manager or a reputable allowance checker on the same blockchain network as the approval, select the spender permission you want to remove, and submit the revocation transaction from your wallet. It costs a network fee. Disconnecting a crypto app from your wallet is not the same thing: it does not cancel an allowance already recorded on-chain.
What a token approval allows
An ERC-20 approval sets an allowance: the amount of a token that a specified spender contract may transfer from your address. The contract can use that permission through the token’s transferFrom function. An allowance can remain in place after you stop using the app that requested it. Ethereum.org warns: “If you grant contract permissions, they can be used, even years after they’re granted.” ethereum.org’s guide to revoking smart contract access explains the risk and review process.

An unlimited approval is convenient because it can avoid repeated approval prompts, but it gives the spender a broader permission than a bounded approval. If the contract is malicious or compromised, it may put the approved token balance at risk. This is a risk of the permission granted, not evidence that every approval will be misused.
Disconnecting an app is not revoking an approval
Disconnecting changes whether a site is connected to your wallet interface. It does not erase an allowance recorded on the blockchain. If your concern is that a spender contract can still transfer a token you approved, revoke or reduce that token allowance on-chain. Conversely, revoking an allowance does not necessarily disconnect the app from your wallet.

How to find and revoke an allowance
- Choose an allowance manager or checker. Ethereum.org describes Ethereum explorer tools such as Etherscan and Blockscout, as well as multi-network services including Revoke, Unrekt, and EverRevoke. MetaMask documents approval controls in its Portfolio interface. These are examples, not safety endorsements; use a tool you can verify and review every wallet transaction before signing. ethereum.org’s guide and MetaMask’s allowance-revocation article describe these options.
- Select the correct network. Check the chain shown by both the wallet and the approval tool. Allowances are network-specific, so an Ethereum scan will not show permissions granted on another chain. Repeat the review on every relevant network, and confirm that your chosen tool supports each one. MetaMask Portfolio’s spending-cap documentation lists Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, BNB Chain, Optimism, and Base; MetaMask’s separate revocation article lists Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain. - Connect the wallet and inspect the permission. Check the token, spender contract, allowance amount, and network. Prioritize permissions you no longer need, do not recognize, or consider excessive. Do not rely on a familiar-looking label alone to establish that a contract is legitimate; verify the contract identity independently where possible.
- Select the allowance to revoke and review the wallet prompt. Confirm that the transaction concerns the intended token and spender before signing. Revocation changes the allowance on-chain and requires gas. The fee and confirmation time vary with network conditions; there is no universal current fee or wait time.
- Verify the result. After the transaction processes, refresh the checker or reconnect the wallet. Confirm that the spender no longer appears with an active allowance, or that the displayed allowance has been reduced to the intended amount.
What revoking changes—and what it does not
Revocation removes or reduces the selected spender’s permission for the token and address covered by that transaction. It does not recover tokens already transferred, establish that a contract is safe, or cancel permissions on other networks. It also does not automatically end staking, pooling, or lending positions, according to ethereum.org. A particular operation may nevertheless require a token allowance, so using it again can prompt you to approve the token again.
This guidance concerns fungible-token allowances such as ERC-20 approvals. NFT operator approvals under ERC-721 or ERC-1155 use different mechanisms; check an appropriate NFT approval view rather than assuming an ERC-20 allowance checker covers them. MetaMask notes that ERC-20 and ERC-777 tokens require spending caps for the flows it describes, whereas ETH itself does not. MetaMask’s spending-cap explanation covers that scope.

Reduce exposure from future approvals
- When the wallet or app offers the choice, approve only the amount needed for the action instead of an unlimited amount.
- Review older allowances periodically and revoke permissions you no longer need. MetaMask suggests making this a monthly habit; that is its practical recommendation, not a universal schedule.
- Expect a dapp to request another approval if a later action needs transfer permission. Check the token, spender, amount, and network again before signing.
The ERC-20 standard cautions interfaces about changing an allowance directly from one nonzero value to another; some flows recommend first setting it to zero. Wallets may handle updates differently, so do not manually interact with a token contract unless you understand the transaction. See the ERC-20 standard.
