Which Switch 2 has a user-replaceable battery?
Nintendo’s 2026 announcement describes a revised Switch 2 console with a user-replaceable battery. It does not establish that the feature applies to the current launch version, nor that a replacement kit will fit earlier units. Nintendo’s support guidance is to check whether the specific product and model has a user-replaceable battery before proceeding. European rollout, not a universal revision date
The announcement covers territories where Nintendo of Europe does business, including the UK, EEA and listed markets such as Switzerland, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Nintendo estimates October 2026 as the earliest Nintendo Store availability for the revised console; that is not a guaranteed on-sale date. The updated models are to replace current versions as stock transitions, and Nintendo Store buyers cannot choose between versions during that transition. Retailer availability may differ, and Nintendo says timing estimates can change.
Battery capacity is slightly lower on the revised console
Nintendo lists the revised battery at 5,172 mAh, compared with 5,220 mAh for the current console—about 1% less capacity. That specification alone does not establish how long either version runs per charge, and Nintendo makes no claim in the announcement that the revision improves runtime.

What the change means for a repair
If you have the revised model
Nintendo says replacement battery kits for the revised products will be available through Nintendo Store Europe in the future, but has not stated when, what they will cost, or which models each kit will fit. The announcement does not establish Amazon availability. Confirm the exact model and the kit’s stated compatibility when a kit is released; do not assume a generic battery or a kit intended for the revision is suitable for a launch-model console.
If you have the current or launch model
Do not treat the revised model’s feature as a DIY instruction for your console. Check Nintendo’s model-specific support information and use the local Nintendo service process if the battery needs attention. Nintendo may offer paid service when a repair is outside warranty or the problem is not covered; availability and terms depend on the market.

Battery aging is different from a covered defect
A battery that gradually holds less charge is not necessarily a warranty defect. For example, Nintendo of Europe’s UK/Ireland terms exclude gradual loss of battery capacity or performance. The relevant question is whether the issue is a covered defect under the warranty for your country, not simply whether the battery can be replaced.
Does replacing the battery void the warranty?
There is no single worldwide answer. Avoid assuming that opening the console is warranty-neutral—or that it automatically voids every warranty. The effect depends on local terms, who performs the work, and whether the repair or resulting damage is related to the issue being claimed.

United States and Canada
Nintendo of America’s hardware warranty runs for one year from purchase and requires proof of purchase. It covers defects in materials and workmanship; physical damage is excluded, although Nintendo or an authorized service center may still be able to service the product. Nintendo says it will not repair or replace a product found damaged by unauthorized modification or tampering. A warranty submission found not to be covered may require payment before repair or replacement. Start with the Switch 2 service request and review the North American warranty terms.
United Kingdom and Ireland
Nintendo of Europe’s warranty document states a 24-month manufacturer’s warranty from purchase for the territories it names: the UK, EEA excluding Spain and Portugal, and Switzerland. It excludes products opened, modified or repaired by anyone other than Nintendo or an authorized partner, as well as gradual battery-capacity or performance loss. Nintendo may offer paid repair or replacement for a non-covered issue at its discretion. Local statutory rights are additional to the manufacturer warranty. Check the Nintendo of Europe warranty terms for the applicable territory.

Nintendo Japan’s terms apply to products sold for Japan. They provide a one-year warranty from first setup for the console and products included in the set, or from purchase for specified products bought separately. The terms cover defects arising under normal use during the warranty period. Service may involve replacement parts or an exchange, and settings or data may be reset. These rules should not be applied to consoles sold in other markets; consult Nintendo Japan’s Switch 2 repair and warranty information.

Prepare before sending a console for service
- Confirm the exact console model and the country or region where it was sold; warranty rules are market-specific.

- Back up data and remove private information where possible. Nintendo of Europe warns that data may be deleted during service; Japan’s terms also say settings or data may be reset.
- Keep proof of purchase if your local warranty process requires it.
