What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Stop interacting with the site, then work out exactly what you did. Connecting a wallet usually exposes its public address; approving token spending or signing a permit can authorize transfers; entering your recovery phrase or private key means the wallet should be treated as compromised. Disconnecting the site does not automatically revoke token approvals.
First: stop interacting and use a trusted device
- Close the suspicious page. Do not follow prompts to “verify,” “synchronize” or “secure” your wallet, and do not reopen the page from the same link.
- Reach your wallet or exchange’s help center independently, using its official app or a website address you enter yourself.
- If you think someone has access to your device, disconnect it from the internet and use a separate, trusted device for account security and any transfer of remaining assets.
- Do not share your recovery phrase, private key, password or one-time codes with anyone—including supposed support staff.

You connected the wallet, but did not sign or share anything
A dapp connection can reveal your public wallet address and let the site view balances and activity associated with it. That is not the same as giving the site your recovery phrase or private key. Disconnect the site in your wallet, then check your wallet activity and token approvals in case you signed something without realizing its effect.

You approved token spending or signed a permit
A token approval gives a smart contract permission to interact with the specified tokens, sometimes up to an unlimited amount. A permit signature can authorize a future transaction without moving funds immediately, so the absence of an immediate transfer does not show that the signature was harmless. The Singapore Police Force explains this risk in its 1 July 2026 advisory.
Disconnect the dapp and separately inspect approvals for every network you use. Revoke any you do not recognize or no longer trust, taking care to confirm the network, contract and transaction details before signing a revocation. Revoking may require a network fee.

You signed a transaction
Review the wallet’s activity and the relevant blockchain explorer for transactions you did not intend. A signed transaction may already have transferred assets or changed permissions. Record suspicious transaction hashes and addresses, then follow the provider-contact and reporting steps below.
You entered or shared your recovery phrase or private key
Treat the wallet as compromised. Anyone who has the phrase or key can control its assets; disconnecting the site or revoking approvals cannot make the exposed secret private again. Stop using that phrase and, from a secure device, create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase and move any remaining assets as soon as you can do so safely. Do not create the replacement wallet from the exposed phrase.
You used an embedded wallet
Secure the identity used to access it—such as your email, Apple, Google or passkey account—and sign out unknown sessions. Change the password where applicable. If assets need to move, follow the wallet provider’s official instructions for exporting keys; never enter a phrase or key into a site or chat claiming to help.

Disconnecting is not the same as revoking an approval
Use the wallet’s own connected-app or dapp-permissions settings to disconnect the suspicious site. Then inspect and revoke token approvals separately: a disconnected site may still have an onchain allowance. Coinbase Wallet documents both controls in its dapp-permissions and token-approvals instructions. Interface labels can change, so follow the current instructions for your wallet rather than assuming another wallet uses the same menus.
The UK National Crime Agency identifies Etherscan’s Token Approval Checker and Revoke.cash as tools for reviewing approvals in its Operation ATLANTIC guidance. Reach any tool through verified official documentation, not through the suspicious site or an unsolicited support message. A revocation is itself a wallet transaction: review what you are signing and expect that a network fee may apply. Coinbase also describes automatic access revocation when a dapp is closed in its in-app encrypted Dapp Browser; that is specific to that feature and should not be assumed for other wallets.
If the recovery phrase was exposed, migrate with care
Create the replacement wallet on a secure device, write down its new phrase securely, and transfer remaining assets to its new address. A compromised wallet may still be under an attacker’s control, so do not delay unnecessarily—but take care to verify the destination address and follow the wallet provider’s official migration instructions. Kraken’s compromised-wallet guidance, last updated 15 September 2026, covers seed-phrase and embedded wallets.

Contact providers, preserve evidence and report the incident
Contact the wallet provider and any exchange or custodial platform through independently verified official channels. Ask whether it can secure your account or take action on activity involving an account it controls. Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, timestamps, screenshots, the suspicious URL and relevant messages.
Report the incident to the relevant police, cybercrime or consumer-protection authority in your location. Reporting routes differ by country: Singapore’s Police Force advisory gives Singapore-specific contacts, while the UK National Crime Agency’s Operation ATLANTIC page includes UK and cross-border guidance. The NCA page is marked expired, so verify contact routes before using them.

Do not assume a provider can reverse an onchain transfer. Kraken states in its compromised-wallet guidance that “Onchain transactions cannot be reversed.” A provider may still be able to secure an account on its own platform or take other steps, which is why prompt contact can be worthwhile. The European supervisory authorities’ 2025 crypto-scams factsheet also advises consumers to stop transactions and contact providers.
Ignore anyone promising to recover your crypto
Stop communicating with the original scammer. Be wary of unexpected calls, messages or emails from people claiming to be law enforcement, regulators, wallet support or crypto-recovery specialists. The NCA says Operation ATLANTIC participants do not offer recovery services, and the European supervisory authorities warn that recovery-room fraud targets people who have already lost money.
Do not pay an upfront “unlock,” “tax” or recovery fee, and do not disclose credentials or sign transactions for someone claiming they will return your funds. A hardware wallet may be one preventive option for future storage, as the Singapore Police Force recommends hardware wallets where possible, but it is not an emergency cure: an exposed phrase still requires a new wallet with a new phrase, and a hardware wallet does not make a malicious transaction safe to sign.
