Keep the existing published theme available as your fallback.
How do I review AI-generated Shopify theme code before publishing?
Use a workflow that separates code generation from approval and publication. Shopify recommends duplicating a theme before customizing its code. Theme files can include Liquid, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JSON, so a change that appears small may affect other templates, settings, snippets, or storefront interactions.

- Protect the live storefront. In Shopify admin, duplicate the theme before editing, or work in a separate unpublished theme. Keep the current published theme intact while you review the change. Shopify’s theme code editing guidance recommends creating a duplicate backup before customization.
- Ask for a narrow, reviewable edit. Describe the intended behavior, the section or template involved, and constraints such as preserving existing settings or mobile behavior. Treat generated output as a proposal; an AI tool cannot establish that a change suits your store.
- Inspect the complete diff. Review every modified file, not just the part the tool described. Check for unrelated edits, unexpected dependencies, and consistency with the theme’s existing conventions. Consider how the changed Liquid, CSS, JavaScript, or JSON interacts with nearby snippets, templates, and settings.
- Run Theme Check. Use the Shopify code editor or Shopify CLI to identify issues the linter can detect. Review warnings as well as errors and understand any suppression before proceeding.
- Preview and test the affected behavior. Test relevant page types and realistic store content in an unpublished-theme preview. Check responsive layouts and the specific actions touched by the code, such as navigation, product options, forms, or cart behavior.
- Get a second review when useful. Share the unpublished theme preview with a teammate or stakeholder and collect feedback before changing the live theme.
- Publish deliberately, then verify. Confirm the selected theme is the intended one, publish it, and check the live pages and interactions affected by the change.
What Theme Check can and cannot tell you
Theme Check is a linter for Shopify themes. It can flag certain problems, including syntax errors, missing templates, unknown or deprecated tags, and performance issues. A clean result does not prove the generated code behaves correctly with your store’s theme, products, settings, apps, or customers. Passing the check is one review step, not approval to publish by itself.
Shopify documents Theme Check as available through Shopify CLI and the Shopify Liquid Visual Studio Code extension. CLI commands for checking and previewing themes are listed in the Shopify CLI theme command reference.

How can I preview Shopify theme changes before they go live?
Preview an unpublished theme rather than experimenting on the live storefront. Shopify supports previews from the theme library and shareable previews for unpublished themes. Developers can also use Shopify CLI’s development and sharing workflows. The right option depends on whether you are making a quick admin edit or working from local files.
| Workflow | Review and rollback strengths | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify admin duplicate or unpublished theme | Provides a backup and preview path inside Shopify; useful for a limited change. Shopify’s code editor includes per-file history. | File history is finite, and restoring a version replaces the whole file. Shopify’s code editing guidance. |
| Shopify CLI development and sharing | Supports development previews, shareable previews, Theme Check, and publishing an unpublished theme. | Requires a developer workflow and care to target the correct store and theme. Shopify CLI theme commands. |
| Shopify GitHub integration | Provides branch history and collaboration; changes made in the Shopify admin are committed back to the connected branch. | Understand sync behavior and conflict risks when the same files are edited through different interfaces. Shopify GitHub integration documentation. |
Test the behavior, not only the appearance
Choose tests based on what the edit changes. A visual adjustment calls for checking the affected page types and screen sizes. Interactive code calls for exercising its actual inputs and outcomes. Shopify’s theme testing guidance covers features, performance, accessibility, browser compatibility, and user interactions; use those areas as a practical checklist for relevant changes.

- Open the affected pages using realistic products, images, and other store content.
- Check the layout at mobile and desktop sizes if the edit changes presentation.
- Exercise the relevant navigation, product selection, form, or cart action end to end.
- Check keyboard and screen-reader-relevant behavior when the edit affects controls or content structure.
- Try the affected experience in the browsers your customers use.
Shopify’s official theme library guidance explains how to preview and share unpublished themes. Sharing a preview lets another person review the work without publishing it.

How should a team review AI theme edits with GitHub?
Make the review point explicit: put the proposed change on a review branch, inspect its diff, run checks, preview the connected theme, and advance or merge the branch only after approval. Shopify’s GitHub integration synchronizes a connected branch and Shopify theme, and admin changes are committed back to that branch.
Be careful when people edit the same files in Shopify admin and GitHub. Shopify documents limited conflict cases, and says the code editor can overwrite the GitHub version without showing a conflict alert. Avoid parallel edits to the same file. If the theme’s state is unclear, review the integration logs and branch history before making further changes; Shopify also documents a reset-to-last-commit action for synchronization recovery.
Plan branch organization and how the team handles source and compiled code, as described in Shopify’s theme version-control guidance. A branch is useful only if the team knows which edits belong there and which state is intended to reach the storefront.

How do I undo a Shopify theme code change?
For a single-file mistake, Shopify’s code editor Timeline view can compare earlier versions and restore a file. Before restoring, copy or otherwise preserve the current contents if you might need them: restoration replaces the entire file, and the available history is finite. For a broader problem, switch back to the preserved theme or use the duplicate as the starting point for recovery. With GitHub, check the branch history and integration state before reverting or resetting so you do not overwrite newer work.
When should you get help with a theme change?
If you cannot confidently identify what the generated code changes, how it affects the theme, or how to recover from a broken result, pause before publishing. Shopify’s guidance is to edit theme code only when the needed change cannot be made with an app or the theme editor. Shopify also describes hiring a Shopify Partner as an option for merchants who need customizations but do not have coding experience; see Customize a merchant theme.
