To see which Mac apps can use sensitive data or hardware, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security, choose a permission category, and review the apps listed there. Turn off access you do not want an app to have; features that rely on that permission may stop working.
How to review and limit app permissions on macOS
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security. Scroll down the sidebar if needed. Apple’s current instructions describe this route for macOS 13 or later (Apple’s guide to controlling app access).
- Select a permission category, such as Camera, Microphone, Location Services, Files & Folders, or Full Disk Access. Other categories include Accessibility, Automation, Input Monitoring, Screen & System Audio Recording, and Local Network. The categories displayed depend on the permission and which apps have requested it.
- Review the apps shown and consider whether each needs that access for a feature you use. Change the setting beside an app to allow or deny access. An app may prompt you again if you later use a feature that requires permission.
macOS prompts for certain kinds of access when an app first requests them; you can revisit the decision in Privacy & Security later (Apple).

Which apps can access my camera, microphone, files, or location on Mac?
Check the matching category in Privacy & Security. For example, review Camera and Microphone for those devices, Location Services for location access, and Files & Folders for access to specific file locations. A category may not appear, or may have no apps listed, if no app has requested that type of access.

For file permissions, distinguish access to particular folders from broader access. Apple describes Full Disk Access as covering all files, including data from other apps and Time Machine backups, as well as certain administrative settings (Apple’s macOS security guide). Grant it only when you trust the app and understand why it needs that scope.

Which permissions deserve extra scrutiny?
Permissions differ in both what they expose and what they let an app do. Consider the capability, not just the app name:
- Broad file access: Full Disk Access has a wider reach than access to a specific folder.
- Input Monitoring: Apple says this permission can allow an app to monitor mouse or trackpad input and see keyboard typing.
- Control over other apps: Automation and Accessibility concern interactions with or control of other apps, rather than simply access to a file or device.
- Network visibility: Local Network governs access to devices on your local network.
Apple’s security guide describes file-access consent for macOS 10.15 or later. It gives the current System Settings route for macOS 13 or later and the older route for macOS 12 or earlier; labels and layout can vary by release (Apple).

How can I tell whether the camera or microphone is active?
Activity indicators provide a cue, but they do not replace reviewing permissions. Apple says a green light beside the camera glows when it is on. For the microphone, check Control Centre’s Recording Indicator, which shows when the microphone is in use or has been used recently (Apple’s privacy settings guide). Use the relevant category in Privacy & Security to change an app’s access.

What if my Mac uses System Preferences?
On macOS 12 or earlier, open Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Apple’s security guide distinguishes this older path from System Settings > Privacy & Security on macOS 13 or later (Apple).

What permission settings do not tell you
These controls govern an app’s access on your Mac; they do not establish what the app does with information it is allowed to access. Apple notes that information collected by third-party apps or websites is governed by those parties’ own terms and privacy policies. Review those policies separately when deciding whether to use an app.
