To reduce the chance that a photo of you can be used for facial recognition, avoid posting a clear, front-facing image when you do not want your face identified. Limit who can see the post, avoid identifying tags, review the service’s current face-related privacy controls, and ask friends not to post or tag clear images of you without checking first. These steps lower exposure; none guarantees anonymity or prevents a service from accessing an image.
Choose which kind of exposure you want to reduce
Different privacy steps address different risks. Restricting an audience can reduce public visibility, while changing or obscuring the face in the image can make the face less recognizable. Removing metadata can reduce location or device information embedded in the file, but does not alter the face in the image. Platform-side processing and other people’s copies or posts are separate concerns.

- Fewer viewers: use a private account or a restricted audience.
- Less facial detail: do not post a clear face image, or crop, blur, cover, or choose an image that shows less of your face.
- Less location information: disable camera geolocation when appropriate and remove location metadata before sharing.
- Less direct association: avoid names and tags that link the image to you.
- Less exposure through others: ask people who take or share photos of you to follow similar precautions.
Reduce facial detail before posting
The FBI’s Portland Division advises people to avoid posting or tagging images that clearly show their face. If you still want to share a moment, choose a distant or angled shot, crop or blur the face, or use a covering. Sunglasses and other coverings may obscure some features, but they should not be treated as reliable ways to defeat facial recognition. No specific technique here guarantees that an image cannot be matched.
Lowering an image’s resolution is not the same as removing metadata, and it is not a dependable privacy substitute. The FBI says image quality and EXIF data have no correlation: image quality concerns the visible picture, while EXIF data is information stored alongside it.

Limit viewers, tags, and direct links to your identity
Set the post’s audience to the smallest group that suits your purpose, and avoid tagging yourself or adding names that directly connect the photo to you. A restricted audience can make a post less publicly visible, but it does not necessarily stop the platform hosting it from accessing or processing it. The FBI notes that services differ and may still access data under restricted visibility settings.
Audience controls also cannot control every copy. Someone who can view the image may be able to save or share it, and another person may post a separate copy. Treat privacy settings as a way to narrow exposure, not as a guarantee that an image stays within its intended audience.

Review the service’s current face-related controls
In the account’s current privacy settings and policy, look for controls or explanations about face recognition, face grouping, suggested tags, face review, and options to disable a feature or delete stored face data. The labels and choices vary by service and can change, so check the service you actually use rather than relying on an old guide.

That is a benchmark for evaluating transparency and user choice, not evidence that a particular platform currently offers a specific control. Meta’s September 2019 post described Facebook settings at that time; it is historical and should not be treated as a current feature list. See the FTC staff report and Meta’s 2019 explanation.

Coordinate with friends and family
Your own account settings cannot govern photos other people post. Ask friends and family to check with you before sharing a clear photo, restrict its audience where appropriate, and avoid tagging you if that is your preference. The FBI specifically recommends that people make sure friends and family who post their pictures take similar precautions. A request is useful, but it cannot guarantee that others will comply or remove every copy already shared.
Remove location metadata when location privacy matters
Photos may contain EXIF metadata, which can include location or device information. Turn off camera geolocation if you do not want new photos to record location, and remove location metadata from a copy before sharing when needed. Then inspect the shared file with a metadata viewer to check what remains. The FBI recommends removing EXIF data before sharing, particularly for images taken in private homes or businesses.

Metadata removal does not hide your face or erase clues visible in the photo itself. Check the image for badges, home interiors, computer screens, landmarks, uniforms, and companions that could reveal your identity or location. The FBI’s photo-sharing guidance and EXIF guidance discuss these distinct risks.

Facial recognition commonly involves extracting features from a face to create a biometric template and comparing it with another image or set of templates. The Australian Office of the Information Commissioner explains the process in its biometrics and facial-recognition guidance. Reducing visible facial detail can reduce what is available in a particular image, but other photos, tags, surroundings, or context may still help link a person to it.

Rules depend on jurisdiction and use. The Council of Europe’s guidelines on facial recognition say that images uploaded online for other purposes cannot be treated as lawful for facial-recognition processing solely because they were made publicly available. This is regional human-rights and privacy guidance, not a universal statement of law or legal advice for every country.
