There you can review audience settings, connected experiences, data access, ad and activity controls, and any Meta AI options available to your account. You generally cannot remove every Meta AI feature with one global switch, and the exact labels differ by app, country, account and rollout. To remove information you deliberately shared with the assistant, use /reset-ai in Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp; in WhatsApp, export the AI history first if you may need a copy.
What Meta AI privacy settings can and cannot do
Meta’s controls address different kinds of information, so changing one setting does not undo every other data flow. Privacy Center is the central starting point for learning how privacy works across Meta services and for reaching tools that let you inspect, download, manage or delete account data. Privacy Checkup focuses on audience visibility, data-use choices and account security, while Accounts Center covers connected accounts and experiences.

Meta says publicly shared Facebook and Instagram posts, including photos and text, were among the data used to train the generative-AI models behind features announced at Connect. It separately says it did not train those models with people’s private posts or ordinary private messages with friends and family unless someone in the conversation chose to share those messages with Meta AI. A post being private therefore changes its normal audience; it does not erase an AI interaction that you intentionally sent to the assistant.

Meta may retain information shared directly with an AI chat for personalized responses or relevant information. It may also send certain questions to trusted search providers to improve an answer. In a group conversation, Meta says the assistant reads messages that invoke @Meta AI and its replies, rather than every unrelated message in the group.

There is no single, guaranteed worldwide “turn off Meta AI” control documented for every product and account. You can avoid invoking the assistant, limit who can see future posts, reset a conversation, delete or download available data, and use regional objection rights where they exist. Those actions have different effects and timelines.
Open Privacy Center and inspect your account
Use the app in which you want to change settings. Meta regularly changes navigation, so treat the labels below as destinations to look for rather than a promise of identical taps on every device.
- Open Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or WhatsApp. Go to the app’s Settings, Settings and privacy, or privacy area.
- Choose Privacy Center. This is Meta’s cross-service hub for explanations and controls. If a direct Privacy Center link is not visible, use the app’s settings search for “Privacy Center” or “privacy.”
- Run Privacy Checkup. Review who can see posts and profile details, how data is used, and account-security settings. Complete each section instead of stopping at the first recommendation.
- Open Accounts Center. Check linked accounts, connected experiences and cross-app settings. A setting changed for one profile may affect another profile connected in the same Accounts Center.
- Review data tools. Look for options to access, download, manage or delete personal information, along with Off-Facebook Activity, ad preferences and cookie controls where Meta shows them.
- Search for AI controls. The available section may mention Meta AI, generative AI, interactions, information shared with AI, or related data-use choices. Read the description beside each control before changing it.
Meta’s current Privacy Center page says more than 10 million people use Privacy Checkup each month. That figure describes use of the tool, not a guarantee that every account has the same controls.

Match the control to the data you are trying to protect

Reset information you sent to Meta AI
Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp
If you gave the assistant a name, health detail, work document, location or another sensitive fact, reset the AI conversation rather than merely hiding the chat from your inbox. Meta documents /reset-ai as the command for deleting information shared in that conversation.
- Open the Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp conversation that contains Meta AI.
- Tap the message field and enter
/reset-aiexactly, including the leading slash and hyphen. - Send the command and read the confirmation or system response shown by the app.
- After the reset, avoid sending the same sensitive information again. If the conversation remains visible, use the app’s ordinary delete-chat control as a separate cleanup step.
The reset targets information shared in that AI chat. It is not a universal account wipe, and it cannot guarantee that a model immediately forgets patterns learned before the reset. If the command is not recognized, update the app, confirm that you are in the Meta AI conversation rather than a regular contact chat, and look for the current AI privacy instructions in Privacy Center.

WhatsApp: preserve history before deleting
WhatsApp’s help material warns that you cannot request or download Meta AI history after deleting the chat or deleting the WhatsApp account. If you need a record for your own files, export or download it first.
- In WhatsApp, open the Meta AI conversation and use the account’s available export or download-data option.
- Save the export in a secure location; it can contain the sensitive text you are trying to remove.
- Return to the conversation and send
/reset-ai. - Use WhatsApp’s delete-chat option if you also want the local conversation removed.
- Use the available request for deletion of information previously shared with Meta AI, following the wording displayed in your account.
Do not delete the WhatsApp account first if you still need the history. Account deletion can remove your opportunity to request or download that record.
Reduce use of your Facebook and Instagram posts
Change audience settings for future posts
Open Privacy Checkup and inspect the default audience for new posts, stories and profile information. Set the narrowest audience that fits your purpose, then review older public posts using the audience or activity-management tools available in your app. This changes who can normally view the content going forward; it is not a retroactive command that rewrites an AI model.
Use the EU objection process when offered
Meta’s EU announcement describes a notification and linked objection form for people in the European Union. It covers specified uses of public data and Meta-AI interactions for training. Meta says the form can be submitted at any time and that it will honor objections already received and newly submitted.
- Open the notification or privacy notice presented in your EU account.
- Follow the link to the objection form.
- Submit the form using the account and contact details requested.
- Keep the confirmation for your records and check Privacy Center for any updated status or wording.
The cited EU process is not evidence of a universal equivalent for every country. People outside the EU should not assume that a matching objection button exists; inspect the controls actually displayed for their region.

Control Meta AI in group chats
Meta says the assistant reads messages that invoke @Meta AI or its replies, rather than all other messages in a group. Treat an invocation as a deliberate disclosure: the text around the invocation can provide context, and the assistant’s response becomes part of the conversation.
- Do not use
@Meta AIwhen a group is discussing confidential personal, medical, legal or workplace information. - If someone else invokes it, avoid replying with additional sensitive details.
- Ask participants to move an AI question to a separate chat when the group contains people who should not receive the information.
- Use the documented reset command in the relevant AI conversation if you already shared something sensitive.
Changing a group’s ordinary audience or notification settings does not substitute for resetting information sent to the assistant.
Review AI-glasses privacy separately
AI-enabled glasses have controls in the Meta AI app rather than only in the social-network settings. Open the Meta AI app and inspect sections for captures, voice, notifications and information shared with Meta.
Captures and shared information
Review when photos, video or other captures are saved or shared, and disable or narrow options you do not need. Check the history for items sent to Meta and delete entries the app allows you to remove.
Voice recordings
Inspect voice-history controls and delete recordings you no longer want retained. Meta says deleted voice recordings will not be used for future training. Deletion is still not instantaneous model erasure: it does not change what a model may already have learned.

Notifications
Choose whether the glasses announce assistant activity and notifications in public or shared settings. This is an exposure and convenience control, not a training opt-out, so review the data-sharing section separately.

The same account may show different labels in Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. Availability can also depend on country, age, account type, language, device version and the stage of a feature rollout. Meta’s official Facebook guidance describes Meta AI as integrated into Facebook and managed through account settings and Facebook privacy tools, while the separate Privacy Center page lists data download/deletion, Off-Facebook Activity, ad preferences and cookie controls as distinct destinations.
When a guide or screenshot does not match your screen, use the app’s settings search and look for the function rather than an identical sentence. For example, “AI interactions,” “information shared with AI,” and “generative AI” may appear as different labels for related choices. Read the explanatory text and the scope—one profile, linked accounts, a single conversation or the whole service—before saving.
Common problems and fixes
“I cannot find a switch to turn Meta AI off.”
There may be no global disable switch for your product or region. Stop invoking the assistant, remove or reset AI conversations, tighten post audiences, and review every AI-related control shown in Privacy Center. Hiding an icon or muting a notification does not necessarily stop data processing.

Confirm the spelling /reset-ai, send it inside the Meta AI chat, and check for an in-app response. If it still fails, update the app and retry from the current conversation. A normal friend-to-friend chat may not accept the command.
“I deleted the WhatsApp chat and now cannot export it.”
WhatsApp says history cannot be requested or downloaded after the chat or account is deleted. That limitation is why export must happen before deletion. You can still use the available deletion request for information previously shared with Meta AI.
“I made a post private, but I am worried about training.”
Audience changes control normal visibility of the post. Meta’s stated training explanation distinguishes public posts from private posts and separately treats information intentionally shared with Meta AI. Review whether the post was ever public and whether you sent its contents to the assistant; those are different questions.
“I am outside the EU and cannot find an objection form.”
Do not assume the EU process is available globally. Check your own Privacy Center notices and the controls presented for your country. If no objection option appears, use the controls that are available—audience restriction, avoidance of AI sharing, reset or deletion requests—and keep the scope of each action in mind.

- Open Privacy Center from each Meta app you actively use.
- Complete Privacy Checkup and verify post, story and profile audiences.
- Inspect Accounts Center for linked profiles and connected experiences.
- Review data-access, download and deletion tools, Off-Facebook Activity, ad preferences and cookie controls.
- Search for Meta AI or generative-AI settings and record what each control covers.
- List every conversation where you deliberately sent information to Meta AI.
- Use
/reset-aiin Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp conversations that contain sensitive information. - In WhatsApp, export history before deleting a chat or the account.
- For EU accounts, submit the available objection form and retain confirmation.
- For AI glasses, review capture, voice, notification and shared-information settings in the Meta AI app.
- Recheck settings after a major app update or when Meta adds a new AI feature.
What to expect after changing a setting
Audience and account settings primarily affect future access and future collection choices. Reset and deletion requests address stored interaction data, but they do not promise that a model changes instantly. Meta’s statement that deleted glasses voice recordings will not be used for future training is a specific assurance about those recordings; it is not a claim that all model outputs or learned patterns disappear at once. Keep that distinction in mind when deciding whether to share information in the first place.
