Unexpected sign-ins, unfamiliar sessions, changed security settings or API activity you did not initiate are reasons to investigate an AI account—but none proves by itself that someone has accessed it. If you suspect a ChatGPT account is compromised, check its security history, end unfamiliar sessions, change an exposed password, secure any linked Google or Microsoft account, and review API keys before adding extra login protection.
Which signs should you check?
Treat these as prompts to inspect your account, not a diagnosis. OpenAI says its security alerts can be cautionary; unusual but legitimate sign-ins or concurrent sessions may also trigger them. Location and device details can be approximate or unavailable.

- A sign-in, device or location you do not recognize.
- An event in security history that you did not make, or an active session you cannot identify.
- A changed password, recovery phone number, MFA method or passkey.
- API usage you did not initiate, or unfamiliar account settings or activity.
OpenAI’s guidance says, “These alerts are often cautionary and do not necessarily indicate wrongdoing.” Review the underlying activity rather than acting on an alert alone. OpenAI account security guidance and OpenAI suspicious-activity alerts explain the signals and recommended checks.
What to do first on a ChatGPT or OpenAI account
- Open ChatGPT directly. Type the service address yourself or use a trusted bookmark, then go to Settings → Security and login → Security history. Look for events you do not recognize. Event details may include time, location and device, but some details can be approximate or unavailable.
- Review active sessions and end unfamiliar ones. If you suspect unauthorized access, OpenAI advises logging out of all sessions. Do not assume a later security change will end sessions for you.
- Change an exposed OpenAI password. If you sign in directly with an OpenAI password and it may be exposed, reused or shared, change it promptly. OpenAI says its direct password-change flow logs current sessions out within 30 minutes; that stated behavior is not a guarantee for every authentication path. Its help page is titled “I’m seeing unrecognized activity on my OpenAI account.”
- Secure your sign-in provider if you use social login. If you choose Google or Microsoft to sign in to ChatGPT, reset the password for that linked account too. OpenAI specifically directs social-login users to reset the provider password.
- Revoke exposed API keys and inspect usage. If you use the OpenAI API, delete keys that may have been exposed and check API usage for activity you did not initiate. Keep relevant event details for your support request.
- Contact OpenAI Support about unauthorized activity. Use a new chat in the Help Center or OpenAI’s unauthorized-activity reporting flow. Navigate to the Help Center yourself rather than following an unsolicited alert link. OpenAI’s instructions are under “What to do if you think your ChatGPT account was hacked / accessed by someone else.”
- Enable MFA after addressing access. OpenAI warns that turning on MFA does not cancel existing logins. Its instruction is: “If you suspect unauthorized access, change your password if you use one and log out of all sessions before enabling MFA.”
Secure the Google or Microsoft account used to sign in
Google sign-in
Review Google account activity and devices, remove devices you do not recognize, and change your Google password if someone else may be signed in. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those services as well. Google identifies unfamiliar changes to critical security settings as a possible sign of account compromise. Follow Google’s compromised-account guidance rather than relying on a notification link.

Microsoft sign-in
Check Microsoft Recent activity and use its options to mark or secure activity you do not recognize. An unusual-sign-in alert can also follow legitimate travel or a newly connected app, so inspect the event before concluding the account was taken over. See Microsoft’s compromised-account recovery steps for the full process.
Microsoft’s recovery instructions include a Windows-specific precaution: make sure antivirus protection is current and run a full scan before changing the Microsoft account password. Afterward, check connected accounts, email forwarding and automatic replies. This is guidance for Microsoft’s recovery flow, not a required step for every AI-account incident.

Choose protection that fits your account
| Sign-in or protection type | What to do after suspected access | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI email and password | Change the OpenAI password, end sessions and then enable MFA. | OpenAI says its direct password-change flow logs current sessions out within 30 minutes; do not assume this timing applies to other login paths. |
| Google or Microsoft sign-in | Secure the linked provider account and reset its password as appropriate, as well as checking ChatGPT sessions. | Changing a provider password is distinct from reviewing and ending sessions in the AI service. |
| Standard MFA | Enable it after changing a potentially exposed password and logging out of sessions. | MFA adds a login factor but does not cancel existing sessions. |
| Advanced Account Security | Check eligibility and recovery requirements before enrolling. | OpenAI says it requires passkeys or physical security keys, disables password sign-in and email/SMS recovery, and does not offer Support-assisted recovery to enrolled users. |
Harden the account after recovery
- Use a unique password for each service that supports password sign-in; a password manager can help you avoid reusing credentials.
- Turn on MFA where available, but first remove unauthorized access rather than treating MFA as a way to terminate existing sessions.
- Review recovery details, registered devices, security history and active sessions periodically.
- Be wary of emails or messages asking for credentials. Go to the service’s official settings or help center directly instead of using unsolicited alert links.
- Where supported, passkeys or a physical security key can add hardware-backed protection. OpenAI mentions YubiKey and physical security keys, but purchasing a key is not an account-recovery step; check the service’s supported methods and the key’s compatibility.
OpenAI announced Advanced Account Security in May 2026 for eligible consumer ChatGPT users. It is unavailable to Enterprise users, enterprise-managed accounts and accounts on enterprise-managed domains. Its stricter recovery rules mean Support cannot help enrolled users regain access, so read OpenAI’s Advanced Account Security eligibility and setup guidance before enrolling. Menus, eligibility and recovery instructions can change; for another AI service, follow that provider’s official security and recovery instructions rather than assuming ChatGPT’s steps apply.
