A regular cellular call will generally disconnect when you turn on Airplane Mode because the mode disables cellular service. Wi-Fi is separate: you can turn it back on, and a supported Wi-Fi call may work. But having Wi-Fi enabled does not guarantee that an active cellular call will transfer without interruption.
What happens to a regular cellular call?
Airplane Mode disables the cellular connection that carries a conventional carrier call. When that connection is lost, the call will generally drop. Apple says that “When Airplane Mode is on, you can’t make phone calls,” though its guidance does not specify exactly when an already-connected call ends on every iPhone, carrier, or software version. So if your phone appears to stay connected briefly after you switch modes, that does not establish that the call will continue. The exact transition can vary, and the available guidance does not promise a universal drop time.

Possibly, if the call is using Wi-Fi Calling rather than the cellular network. Wi-Fi Calling is a carrier-supported feature that must be available for your phone and set up with your carrier. Google’s Phone app may label such calls “Internet Call” or “Wi-Fi calling”; see Google’s Wi-Fi Calling instructions.

Airplane Mode does not necessarily keep Wi-Fi off. On iPhone, you can turn Wi-Fi back on while Airplane Mode remains enabled; Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains the separate controls. On Pixel phones, wireless settings can be changed and remembered for later use, as described in Google’s Pixel Airplane Mode guidance. Steps and behavior on other Android devices may differ.
Will an active cellular call switch to Wi-Fi automatically?
Do not assume so. A Wi-Fi call being possible after Airplane Mode is enabled is different from an existing cellular call seamlessly transferring to Wi-Fi. The sources establish that Wi-Fi Calling depends on carrier support and setup, but do not establish a general handoff outcome for every phone and carrier.

Google Fi documents its own routing behavior: it chooses between Wi-Fi and cellular based on the connection it considers better, and a Fi Wi-Fi call may continue over mobile service if Wi-Fi weakens and cellular is available. Why might two people see different results?
The outcome depends on the connection carrying the call and the phone’s available settings—not just on whether the Airplane Mode icon appears.

- Call type: A cellular carrier call, a carrier Wi-Fi call, and an internet call in an app use different connections.
- Radio state: Airplane Mode disables cellular, while Wi-Fi may be switched back on separately.
- Network: A Wi-Fi call requires a working Wi-Fi connection; cellular service may or may not be available.
- Support and setup: The phone and carrier must support Wi-Fi Calling, and the feature may need to be enabled.
- Handoff: Whether a particular live call can move between networks depends on the device and carrier.
What about emergency calls?
Apple says emergency calls may be made over Wi-Fi when cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled. Availability and routing can depend on the carrier and the emergency address on file. Do not treat Airplane Mode or Wi-Fi Calling as a guaranteed substitute for cellular emergency access; see Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling privacy information.
