Which Garmin HRM Chest Strap Should You Choose: HRM 200 or HRM 600?

Choose the Garmin HRM 200 if you mainly need heart-rate and HRV transmission, a replaceable battery and fewer charging interruptions. Choose the HRM 600 if you will use its standalone workout recording, expanded running data, indoor pace and distance, or swim heart-rate capture. Both transmit over ANT and Bluetooth Low Energy; the HRM 600’s extra features are not supported by every compatible Garmin watch, so check support for your specific watch before buying.

What is different between the HRM 200 and HRM 600?

The main difference is not basic connectivity: Garmin lists both straps with ANT and Bluetooth Low Energy transmission. The HRM 200 covers routine heart-rate and HRV use, while the HRM 600 adds recording when you are not wearing a watch and several additional training functions. That makes the choice about features you will use, not whether the less expensive model can transmit heart rate to a compatible device.

Which one is better for your training?

Choose the HRM 200 for routine heart-rate tracking

If your goal is to send heart-rate data to a compatible watch or other receiving device, the HRM 200 has the same listed ANT and Bluetooth Low Energy options as the HRM 600. It is the more practical fit when you do not need the newer strap’s extra recording and training functions. Its replaceable CR2032 also means you can swap the battery rather than recharge the strap.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose the HRM 600 for workouts without a watch and added metrics

The HRM 600 can record workouts without a watch and later transfer the data to Garmin Connect. Garmin describes recording heart rate, calories, speed, distance and more. It also adds expanded running dynamics, treadmill and indoor-track pace and distance, and swim heart-rate capture. These are meaningful reasons to pay more if they match your training; they offer little benefit if you only need a live heart-rate feed.

Garmin notes that advanced HRM 600 functions are not supported by every compatible smartwatch. Before choosing it for a particular metric or recording workflow, verify that your exact watch model supports that function. See Garmin’s HRM 600 feature details.

How do battery, water rating and fit compare?

Battery: replaceable versus rechargeable

Garmin rates the HRM 200’s user-replaceable CR2032 for up to 12 months and the HRM 600’s rechargeable battery for up to two months, in each case at one hour of use per day. These rated durations favor the HRM 200 for long intervals between battery changes. The HRM 600 avoids disposable coin cells but needs periodic charging.

Water rating is not the same as swim heart-rate support

The HRM 600 has a 5 ATM rating and Garmin specifically lists swim heart-rate capture as a feature. The HRM 200 is rated 3 ATM, but that rating alone does not establish that it provides the HRM 600’s swim heart-rate function. If recording heart rate while swimming matters, look for that feature explicitly rather than relying on a water-resistance rating.

Choose a size by chest measurement

Garmin lists the same size ranges for both straps: XS–S for a chest circumference of 60–85 cm and M–XL for 80–119 cm. The ranges overlap, so use your measurement and current product listing to select a size; a shared range does not guarantee the straps will feel identical. Both straps are machine washable with the module removed.

Are the HRM 600’s extra features worth the higher price?

Garmin announced the HRM 200 at a suggested US price of $79.99 on January 6, 2025, and the HRM 600 at a suggested US price of $169.99 on May 15, 2025. These are historical launch prices, not current retailer quotes. Current prices can vary, so compare listings when you are ready to buy.

Does one strap provide more accurate heart-rate readings?

Garmin markets both as heart-rate monitors, but its available product information does not establish that one is measurably more accurate than the other. There is no basis here for choosing between them on a claim of superior accuracy; base the decision on connectivity, battery, recording and the features you need.
