There is no reliable one-size-fits-all number of days to wait before running after a hamstring injury. Return according to symptoms, strength, functional capacity and how your hamstring responds to loading—not the calendar. Start with controlled running and build toward faster work; sprinting and unrestricted sport require separate, higher milestones.
When can you start running again?
Use readiness criteria rather than a fixed timetable. The London International Consensus panel recommends an individualized approach, but did not agree on one set of criteria or a universal strength benchmark for starting to run. The affected muscle, injury characteristics, running demands and your response to previous activity all matter. The panel’s recommendations are described in the 2023 London International Consensus and Delphi study on hamstring injuries, part 3.

That means a calendar date alone cannot establish that you are ready. If you are unsure whether your symptoms or function are appropriate for a return, or your recovery is not progressing as expected, seek an assessment from a sports physical therapist or sports medicine clinician.
How to build back to running
Think of running as a progressive exposure, not a single pass-or-fail test. Use symptoms, strength and your response to the last load to decide whether to progress. The consensus supports running and sprinting as rehabilitation components, but does not prescribe a universal schedule, distance, pace or rate of increase.

- Tights vs Sleeves: Get targeted relief for problematic areas rather than an all-over "squeeze" of the entire leg! This is extremely helpful for pulled hamstrings and overworked quadriceps to promote healthy blood flow, ensure optimized performance and minimize the risk of injury.
- Enhances performance by promoting blood flow, reducing muscle vibrations, and decreasing fatigue while increasing structural support and combatting the annoying effects of DOMS. Compression is also beneficial for healing damaged or torn muscles after sudden injuries.
- Wearing the BODYPROX thigh sleeves during heavy lifts can help with mind and body connection, helping to "engage" your muscles during training sessions. They ensure your muscles are getting the oxygen they need to function properly while simultaneously preventing lactic acid build-up in your muscles.
- Great to wear on and off the track! Thigh compression sleeves fit well under clothing so you can prevent and protect against further injury while at work or around the house.
- Made with a knitted blend of Nylon and Latex with 10% Spandex for extreme stretch that releases excess body heat and prevents skin irritation. Silicone waves keep sleeves in place. Comes in 4 sizes: measure the circumference at the top of your thigh to find your best fit!
1. Check symptoms in context
Pain is one consideration, but the consensus did not establish a numeric pain cutoff for starting or progressing running. Experts accepted that mild pain may be tolerable during some rehabilitation activity when the athlete and rehabilitation team agree on a threshold. This is not permission to ignore worsening symptoms or a universal rule for every runner.
2. Restore strength and functional capacity
Later-stage rehabilitation aims to restore strength, including at longer muscle lengths and through eccentric work. A 2022 clinical practice guideline advises a comprehensive, appropriately progressed functional exercise program that includes eccentric training. The guideline also identifies a prior hamstring strain as a reinjury risk factor. See the 2022 Hamstring Strain Injury in Athletes: Clinical Practice Guidelines and its PubMed record.

3. Reintroduce running demand gradually
Begin with a level of running demand that fits your current capacity, then adjust based on how you respond. The evidence does not establish a safe universal progression rate or a fixed jog-to-speed-running plan. If symptoms flare or function worsens after a step up, do not treat the planned schedule as more important than your response; get individualized advice on how to modify the load.

Faster running and sprinting place different demands on the hamstring. Progress speed deliberately rather than assuming that tolerating an easy run means you are ready to sprint. The consensus supports incorporating running and sprinting into rehabilitation, while acknowledging that experts did not settle on criteria for safe return to sprinting.

- RELIEVES STIFF AND SORE MUSCLES: Increasing circulation and retaining therapeutic heat, the compression support wrap relieves stiff and sore thigh muscles. Effective for groin, hamstring and quad strains and pulls, the thigh support brace promotes healing, reduces recovery time and is useful in preventing re-injury.
- LIGHTWEIGHT, BREATHABLE NEOPRENE: Lightweight and breathable, the latex-free neoprene wicks away moisture and includes small ventilation holes for cool and comfortable wearability. The slim neoprene wrap can be worn under or over clothing.
- NONSLIP ADJUSTABLE FIT: Two premium elastic straps with velcro closures allow the stretchable hamstring support to be adjusted to fit thighs up to 25” in circumference. The nonslip neoprene stays in place throughout the day without sliding or bunching for exceptional comfort. Fitting the right or left leg, the adjustable thigh support can be worn by men or women.

Easy running, sprinting and return to sport are different milestones
A controlled easy run does not equal clearance for sprinting, unrestricted training or competition. The consensus calls for pain-free running before sprinting, and emphasizes pain-free sprinting and completion of unrestricted training at the volume, speed and intensity required by the sport before return to sport. Return-to-sport decisions should be shared with the athlete and rehabilitation team, including discussion of risk.

The 2023 consensus report received a final survey response from 99 of 112 experts (88.2%). Its threshold for consensus was 70%. Agreement was strong on many rehabilitation topics, but that does not make every possible clearance measure settled.

| Consensus topic | Panel agreement |
|---|---|
| Exercise selection and dosage | 78.8%–96.3% |
| Running and sprinting in rehabilitation | 83%–100% |
| Return-to-sport criteria | 78.3%–98.3% |
| Flexibility benchmarks | 40%; below the 70% consensus threshold |
| Strength benchmarks | 66.1%; below the 70% consensus threshold |
These percentages measure expert agreement, not patient recovery rates or an individual runner’s chance of reinjury. The panel did not establish a universal pain threshold, fixed strength or flexibility benchmark, or exact timetable and dose for moving from jogging to faster running. A 2018 review of rehabilitation and return to sport after hamstring strain injury describes a phased approach, from symptom management and slower neuromuscular control toward faster work and eccentric strengthening in lengthened positions; it is background, not a universally validated recipe.
