How to Keep Health Insurance After Losing Your Job in Michigan

If you lose your job and your job-based health insurance ends, you may be able to enroll in a Marketplace plan through HealthCare.gov, continue your employer plan temporarily through COBRA, join a spouse’s or family member’s plan, or qualify for Medicaid or another Michigan program. The enrollment clock usually starts when your employer coverage ends—not simply on your last day at work—so confirm that date before choosing a replacement.

How do I keep my health insurance after I lose my job?

Start by asking your former employer or plan administrator for the exact last day of your current coverage and, if offered, your COBRA election notice and premium. Then compare the available routes before your coverage ends. HealthCare.gov says that if you leave a job for any reason—including quitting or being fired—and lose job-based coverage, you can enroll in a Marketplace plan.

  1. Confirm the end date. Ask when your employer plan stops covering you and any dependents. Your job can end before your insurance does.
  2. Check a spouse’s or family member’s plan. Contact its plan administrator promptly and ask how to request special enrollment, what proof is needed, and when coverage could begin.
  3. Apply through HealthCare.gov. Losing job-based coverage may give you a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. The Marketplace application can also assess eligibility for savings and public coverage.
  4. Compare COBRA with the other options. Use the actual COBRA premium and plan documents, not an estimate, and compare them with available Marketplace and public-coverage results.
  5. Confirm the replacement start date and payment requirements. Do not cancel existing coverage or assume a new plan is active until you have verified its effective date and any required first payment.

How long do I have to sign up after losing job-based coverage?

Marketplace: generally 60 days

HealthCare.gov says to apply within 60 days of losing job-based coverage. For this loss-of-coverage Special Enrollment Period, coverage can start the first day of the month after the employer coverage ends. Check the application for the effective date that applies to your circumstances and complete enrollment and payment steps on time.

Spouse or family-member employer plan: generally 30 days

Federal Department of Labor guidance says a spouse’s, parent’s, or dependent’s group health plan may allow special enrollment after loss of job-based coverage, generally if you request it within 30 days. Contact the plan administrator immediately to confirm the deadline, documents, and start date for that specific plan.

COBRA: use the election notice

COBRA has its own election and payment deadlines. The exact requirements and your eligibility should be stated in the notice from the employer or plan administrator; review it rather than relying on a general estimate.

Should I choose COBRA or a Marketplace plan?

There is no universally cheaper or better option. COBRA may let you continue the employer group plan, while a Marketplace plan may qualify for income-based premium tax credits or other savings. Compare the actual plans and your eligibility, including the following:

  • Monthly premium: For COBRA, request the full amount you would owe. For Marketplace coverage, use the premium shown after your application evaluates savings eligibility.
  • Costs when you receive care: Compare deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and the out-of-pocket maximum.
  • Care access: Check whether your doctors, hospitals, and prescription drugs are covered in network or on the plan’s formulary.
  • Continuity and effective date: Consider whether you can keep using current providers and whether the new coverage leaves a gap.
  • Eligibility and duration: Check whether you qualify for Marketplace savings or public coverage, and how long the option can cover you.

HealthCare.gov describes COBRA as usually available for up to 18 months in this job-loss scenario, with the former employee generally paying the full premium plus a small administrative fee. Your election notice supplies the amount and applicable deadlines. Eligibility depends on the plan and circumstances.

Can I get Medicaid or the Healthy Michigan Plan if I lose my job?

Possibly, but losing a job by itself does not establish eligibility. A HealthCare.gov application can assess whether you or household members may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. Michigan’s Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) also identifies Medicaid, the Healthy Michigan Plan, and MIChild as coverage options for people who meet program requirements. Eligibility depends on the applicable program rules and your circumstances; use the official application process rather than assuming unemployment automatically qualifies you.

What happens if I elect COBRA and later want Marketplace insurance?

Do not assume that voluntarily ending COBRA early will give you a new Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. HealthCare.gov says that choosing to cancel COBRA before it expires generally does not itself create a new enrollment window. COBRA expiration, certain involuntary losses of eligibility, or specified changes such as an employer ending its contribution may qualify. Check HealthCare.gov’s rules for your situation before ending COBRA or relying on a later enrollment opportunity.

What are Michigan’s Marketplace enrollment dates?

For 2027 coverage, Michigan DIFS lists Marketplace Open Enrollment as November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. DIFS says you need to select a plan by December 15, 2026, for coverage to begin January 1, 2027. A qualifying loss of job-based coverage may allow you to enroll outside Open Enrollment through a Special Enrollment Period. Confirm dates and rules with HealthCare.gov or DIFS, as they can change.

Where can I get enrollment help in Michigan?

Apply or review options at HealthCare.gov. Michigan DIFS lists the Marketplace call center at 800-318-2596 and directs residents to LocalHelp.HealthCare.gov to find local assistance. For questions about COBRA or a spouse’s employer plan, contact the plan administrator named in the relevant notice or plan documents.
