Track each URL as its own work item
A batch is a collection of independent captures, even if a scheduler runs them inside one job. Keep a record for every input URL so a failure for one page does not erase or repeat successful work.

At minimum, record the original URL, current status, attempt count, timestamps, last error, and the location or identifier of the successful output. Persist this state somewhere that survives a process restart. The storage design is yours to choose; there is no universal batch data model.

- Pending: not yet attempted.
- Running: an attempt is in progress.
- Succeeded: the screenshot is saved and its result recorded.
- Retryable failure: an attempt failed for a reason your provider or runtime identifies as potentially temporary.
- Permanent failure: input or access problems that another attempt is not expected to fix.
On restart, select only pending or eligible failed records. Do not mark a URL successful until its output has been saved and the corresponding state update is durable; otherwise a crash between those operations can leave the record inconsistent with the files.

Retry selectively, with a cap
Use the error information from the actual browser library or screenshot API to decide whether to retry. A transient service interruption may justify another attempt; malformed input, persistent access denial, or an application-level error may not. The sources do not establish a universal list of retryable HTTP statuses or browser errors, so do not apply one blindly across providers.
- Read the capture result and preserve its error details.
- Classify it using the provider’s documentation and your application’s policy.
- If retryable and below the attempt cap, schedule that URL again after a delay.
- Otherwise, mark it failed and retain the reason in the final manifest.
Choose a maximum attempt count and delay policy appropriate to the service and workload. There is no universally correct number or backoff interval in the available provider-neutral guidance. A cap prevents a persistent failure from keeping a batch alive indefinitely.
Distinguish URL retries from whole-job retries
An application-level retry re-runs one failed URL. A scheduler-level retry reruns a failed job attempt and can repeat earlier work unless the job reloads per-URL checkpoints and skips completed captures.

AWS Batch illustrates why scheduler behavior must be checked rather than assumed. Its guide says jobs are attempted once by default and documents a retry strategy of 1 to 10 attempts; its timeout guidance says a job terminated because of timeout is not retried. Those are AWS Batch-specific rules, not general scheduler semantics. See the AWS Batch retry strategy and AWS Batch job timeouts documentation.
If your scheduler retries a whole job, make the job restart-safe: load saved URL states at startup, leave successful items untouched, and resume only eligible records. If you cannot checkpoint safely, a job retry may recapture completed URLs and increase execution time or cost.
Keep capture failures separate from visual mismatches
A failed navigation or screenshot request is not the same as a screenshot that differs from an expected image. Playwright’s visual screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots match, then compares the last image with the expectation. That is a visual-stability and assertion behavior, not a generic retry policy for failed URLs or batch jobs. See Playwright visual comparisons.

When visual consistency matters, keep the capture environment stable across baseline generation and comparison. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Pin or otherwise control those conditions where possible; changing them can produce visual differences unrelated to a URL retry.
Preserve evidence and produce a final manifest
Keep the attempt history and useful diagnostics rather than replacing an earlier failure with only the latest result. Include a final manifest that identifies successes and failures, attempt counts, relevant timestamps, and last errors. This lets downstream users distinguish a partial batch from a complete one and investigate persistent failures.

Attach diagnostic material when it helps explain the failure; avoid treating visual assertion retries as URL-queue retries.

Operational checklist
- Persist one state record per URL and retain successful output references.
- Define retryability from the selected provider or browser runtime, not a supposedly universal status list.
- Set a finite attempt limit and an explicit delay policy.
- Confirm whether the scheduler retries a URL, a test, or the whole job, and how it handles timeouts.
- Make restarted jobs load checkpoints and skip completed URLs.
- Keep the rendering environment stable when comparing images.
- Emit a final manifest with successes, failures, and diagnostic context.
Troubleshooting
The whole batch repeats after one URL fails
The scheduler is likely retrying the job rather than the individual URL, or the job is not restoring its checkpoint. Persist completion per URL and have a restarted job skip succeeded records. Verify the scheduler’s documented retry and timeout rules.
A URL keeps failing on every attempt
Inspect the recorded error and classify it with the provider’s documentation. If it indicates invalid input, access denial, or another persistent condition, stop retrying and report the failure instead of consuming the remaining attempts.

The screenshot succeeds, but visual comparison still fails
That is a visual mismatch rather than necessarily a capture failure. Check whether the browser version, host environment, settings, or headless mode changed, then compare under consistent conditions. Playwright’s visual assertion behavior addresses screenshot stability and expectation comparison, not recovery of a failed URL.

A timeout is not retried
Check the scheduler-specific timeout policy. AWS Batch documents that a job terminated because of timeout is not retried under its timeout guidance; other schedulers may behave differently.
The final result is unclear after a process crash
Compare saved output files with the persisted per-URL state and make the success-recording sequence durable. Keep the attempt history and write a manifest that clearly distinguishes complete captures from unresolved or failed items.
