YouTube requires an encoder configured with its stream URL and key. You can use VLC for local playback, but confirm that your installed setup can repeat files, hand them off cleanly, and deliver a YouTube-compatible feed before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
How VLC playback and YouTube Live fit together
A continuous YouTube stream involves two separate jobs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Playback: playing one or more local media files in sequence, and repeating them if the software supports that behavior.
- Ingest: sending an encoded audio-video feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes configuring an encoder with these details. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder
VLC’s desktop 3.0 documentation describes a VLM playlist broadcast over HTTP. It explains that the next input runs after the previous input ends and that sout-keep keeps streaming across a file boundary. The documented example sends an HTTP broadcast over a local network to a receiving device; it is not a YouTube RTMP recipe. VLC 3.0 Desktop User Documentation: VLM

Set up the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream and copy the stream URL and stream key shown in its setup.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a credential: do not show it in screenshots, share it publicly, or include it in public configuration examples.
- Configure an encoder with the URL and key. Start sending its audio-video feed to YouTube. YouTube says the watch page is created when the encoder starts. A scheduled event follows a separate control-room workflow; after the preview appears, you may need to select Go live. Check the current Live Control Room prompts for your event. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder
YouTube also distinguishes the broadcast—the event or video viewers watch—from the stream—the transmission settings used to send audio and video to YouTube. Creating or scheduling the event belongs in Live Control Room; playlist behavior belongs in playback or encoder configuration. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
Configure VLC’s documented sequential-file behavior
VLC 3.0’s VLM example uses multiple input commands on one channel, an HTTP output, and sout-keep. In that documented setup, VLC starts the next input when the current input’s streaming ends; sout-keep keeps the stream from breaking at a file boundary. Follow the example in the VLC documentation for the syntax and adapt its local file paths and receiving address to your setup: VLC 3.0 VLM documentation.

- VLC for Kindle plays most local video and audio files, as well as network streams (including adaptive streaming), like the desktop version of VLC.
- VLC for Kindle has a media library for audio and video files, and allows to browse folders directly.
- VLC has support for multi-track audio and subtitles. It supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustments, hardware acceleration and gestures to control volume.
- It also includes a widget for audio control, supports audio headsets control, cover art and a complete audio media library.
That example is specifically an HTTP broadcast to a receiver on a local network. It does not show how to direct VLC to YouTube’s ingest server, and its sequence of inputs does not demonstrate an infinite repeat control. Do not treat it as a complete VLC-to-YouTube procedure.

Verify repeat, handoff, and YouTube compatibility
If you add another encoder between VLC and YouTube, or use different software versions, verify the whole chain before scheduling a long broadcast. These are checks to perform, not outcomes established by the cited documentation:

- YouTube ingest: confirm the encoder is using the server URL and key from Live Control Room and that YouTube receives a healthy preview before going live.
- Recovery and monitoring: decide how you will notice and respond to a stopped encoder, network interruption, or lost YouTube connection. The cited VLC and YouTube setup guidance does not establish the resilience of a particular configuration.
- Version support: check the documentation for the VLC and any intermediary encoder versions actually installed; the cited VLC example is for desktop VLC 3.0.
Plan around YouTube archives and ongoing broadcasts
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not mean an indefinitely long 24/7 feed will become one uninterrupted archive. If you plan to keep a channel running, decide how broadcasts should be split or ended and check the current YouTube controls for managing the event. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder
Check rights and YouTube’s rules before streaming
Only stream media you have the rights to use, including music, video, and any other material in the playlist. A file playing successfully in VLC does not establish that you may broadcast it on YouTube. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream requirements in Studio and in its help documentation before going live.
