To retry a failed scheduled website screenshot, configure a bounded retry around the entire capture job—in the script, workflow, or scheduler—not just around a visual screenshot assertion. First check whether the scheduler started the job, then classify the failure, retry only plausible transient errors, and verify the saved image before reporting success.
Understand what needs retrying
A scheduled capture has two separate stages: the scheduler starts a job, and browser automation visits the page and saves an image. A retry of a visual assertion inside a test is not the same as rerunning that scheduled job.

Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots match before comparing the final screenshot with the baseline. Diagnose the failed scheduled run first
Confirm the trigger ran
Open the scheduler’s run history and logs. If no run exists, investigate the trigger before debugging browser automation. For GitHub Actions, scheduled events can be delayed during high load, and some queued jobs can be dropped; a missing run may therefore be a trigger problem rather than a failed capture. See GitHub’s schedule event documentation.
Classify the failure
Record the original error, the scheduled occurrence, and the attempt number. Useful diagnostic categories include:
- Scheduler or runner startup failure.
- Browser launch failure.
- Navigation or page-readiness timeout.
- Screenshot generation failure.
- File-writing or artifact-upload failure.
This is a practical way to organize logs, not a taxonomy prescribed by Playwright. The category helps determine whether another attempt has a reasonable chance of succeeding.

Add a bounded retry around the capture job
Put the retry at the layer that runs the capture: a wrapper script, workflow, or scheduler policy. The retry should rerun the complete operation, including browser launch, navigation, capture, and output validation, so a fresh attempt is not using partially failed state.
Decide which errors are retryable
- Usually plausible transient failures: temporary network errors, occasional browser startup problems, or an upstream service timeout.
- Usually configuration problems: invalid credentials or URLs, missing dependencies, deterministic selector errors, and write-permission failures. Fix the cause instead of repeating the same failing operation.
Use a small, finite attempt limit and increasing delays. Playwright’s reviewed documentation does not prescribe a universal retry count or delay for scheduled captures. Set limits with the schedule cadence and capture cost in mind; never retry indefinitely.
Keep attempts separate and preserve the last good image
Name outputs using the scheduled occurrence and, when useful, the attempt number. Save each attempt to a temporary path, check that the file exists and is nonempty, and promote it to the final artifact only after validation. This avoids a failed attempt overwriting the last known-good image. These are implementation recommendations, not Playwright defaults.

Fail honestly after the final attempt
Return a failed job status if capture or writing still fails. Report success only after the expected image is present and usable. Keep the attempt logs or diagnostic artifacts so retries do not conceal a recurring problem.

If one capture can still be running when the next schedule fires, choose whether the newer run may replace an older pending run or whether every scheduled occurrence must be retained. GitHub Actions workflows can run concurrently by default. A concurrency group can limit active runs; by default, a new pending run can replace an existing pending one. GitHub documents a queue option when pending runs need to wait instead. See GitHub’s concurrency documentation.
Choose the behavior that matches the job’s purpose: a current-state monitor may prefer the newest capture, while an audit trail may require every scheduled occurrence. Check the workflow’s concurrency behavior against that requirement rather than assuming every cron tick will produce a separate completed artifact.

Use the right retry for screenshots and visual tests
Use a job-level retry when the capture operation itself failed and another complete run may succeed. Use Playwright’s auto-retrying screenshot assertion when a test needs to wait for a page to settle before comparing it with an expected image. Its timeout is elapsed assertion-retry time, not a configured count of scheduled-job reruns.
For comparisons across runs, keep the browser and execution environment consistent where practical. Rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode, so an image difference does not by itself prove that the website changed. Playwright describes these environment-related rendering differences in its visual comparisons documentation.

Troubleshoot common retry failures

Does Playwright automatically rerun a failed scheduled screenshot?
No. The screenshot assertion can retry while waiting for visual stability, but rerunning a failed scheduled capture must be configured in the surrounding job or scheduler.
Should every failure be retried?
No. Retry bounded, plausibly transient runtime failures. Correct invalid inputs, missing dependencies, deterministic selector problems, and permission errors at their source.
