Its cost depends on the complete setup’s average power draw at the wall and your electricity tariff—not on the power rating printed on the Pi’s supply. Use monthly cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 720 × price per kWh. For illustration, at the U.S. 2025 average residential rate of 17.30¢/kWh, a setup averaging 4 W would cost about $0.50 for 30 days. That is a calculated scenario, not a measured Pi 5 streaming result.
Estimate the monthly electricity cost
For continuous operation over a 30-day month, convert average watts to kilowatts, multiply by 720 hours, then multiply by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh):

Monthly cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 720 × price per kWh
Equivalently, at any stated tariff, each continuous watt uses 0.72 kWh in 30 days. If your meter measures energy directly, use the kWh it records for the complete setup and multiply by the tariff on your bill.

Illustrative 30-day scenarios
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a 2025 annual average residential electricity price of 17.30¢/kWh in its 2026 publication of 2025 data. The following costs are arithmetic scenarios at that rate; they are not measurements of a Raspberry Pi 5 streaming setup.
| Assumed average wall draw | Energy in 30 days | Approximate cost at 17.30¢/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 2 W | 1.44 kWh | $0.25 |
| 4 W | 2.88 kWh | $0.50 |
| 6 W | 4.32 kWh | $0.75 |
| 10 W | 7.20 kWh | $1.25 |
At that tariff, every continuous watt of average draw adds about 12.46 cents over 30 days. Your result scales directly with both average watts and the electricity price.

Use your own electricity rate and measured draw
The 17.30¢/kWh figure is a U.S. national residential average for 2025, not a universal rate or an estimate of your particular bill. EIA’s published state averages for 2025 ranged from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii. For a household estimate, use the per-kWh rate on your bill. If consulting an EIA monthly table instead, match the state and residential customer class, and note the table’s data month and release date.
Measure the complete system at the wall
- Connect a plug-in electricity meter between the wall outlet and the power supply for the Pi setup.
- Include the equipment you actually run: the Pi, USB storage, cooling fan, HATs, and any other powered peripherals.
- Let the system operate under representative conditions. For an always-on installation, a longer measurement that includes normal streaming and idle periods gives a more useful average than a brief reading.
- Read the meter’s accumulated kWh and multiply by your electricity price per kWh. If the meter reports average watts instead, apply the 30-day formula above.
A meter’s wall-side reading captures the whole powered setup, including power-supply losses. Raspberry Pi’s published board measurements are approximate and do not include extra USB devices or HATs; its documentation warns that these can raise total consumption.

Why a Raspberry Pi 5’s power rating does not give the answer
Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for the Pi 5. That is the supply’s capacity recommendation, not evidence that the board draws 27 W continuously. The actual wall draw varies with workload, attached equipment, and conversion losses in the supply.
Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation gives a typical bare-board active current of 800 mA. Multiplying that by the nominal 5.1 V supply gives about 4.1 W on the DC side, but this is only an illustrative conversion of a vendor figure. It is not a verified wall reading for streaming prerecorded video, and it excludes supply losses and peripherals. The documentation also includes workload measurements such as H.264 video playback, but those approximate board measurements should not be treated as a whole-system streaming bill.

YouTube’s live-encoder guidance describes platform requirements and settings, including RTMP/RTMPS and supported codecs and frame-rate guidance. Those requirements do not establish that a particular Pi 5 configuration has been tested, certified, or guaranteed for a prerecorded-video streaming workflow. No specific streaming resolution, encoder, peripherals, or power supply is assumed in the cost scenarios here.
What can change the estimate
- Average draw: A higher average wall draw raises the cost proportionally. Streaming, playback, and idle periods can have different power demands.
- Attached equipment: USB storage, a fan, a HAT, or other powered devices add to the system total; measure them as part of the setup.
- Hours operated: If the Pi runs fewer than 720 hours in the month, use its actual operating hours in place of 720.
- Tariff: Electricity prices vary by place and customer class. Use the rate applicable to your bill, not an unqualified national average.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving a Raspberry Pi and its connected equipment running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card required; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide.
