There is no single monthly price: it depends on your server’s measured power use, your electricity tariff, and whether your internet plan limits or charges for upload data. For two continuous 1080p30 streams at YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate, budget for about 10 Mbps of video upload and 3.24 decimal TB of payload in a 30-day month, before overhead. Electricity is calculable from actual wall power; a new server, if needed, is a separate one-time cost.
Estimate the recurring cost without guessing
Separate the bill into three parts: electricity, any internet-plan charge attributable to upload use, and hardware if you need to buy a host. The first two recur; a server purchase is an upfront cost (or an amount you choose to amortize). If you already own a suitable machine, its purchase price is not a new cost of this project, though its added electricity and workload still matter.

Use the stream settings to estimate upload and data
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. These are recommended encoder video bitrates, not guaranteed connection-speed requirements. The estimates below multiply both feeds’ bitrates by continuous runtime for a 30-day month; they exclude protocol overhead and are decimal network quantities. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also recommends testing the connection and monitoring stream health.

| Two 720p30 feeds at 3 Mbps each | 6 Mbps | About 1.944 decimal TB |
These are calculations from YouTube’s recommended bitrates, not data-use figures published by YouTube. Actual traffic can differ because of audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and bitrate behavior; your ISP may also define TB differently. For a quick estimate, total Mbps × 324 gives decimal GB of payload for a 30-day month, excluding overhead. Then compare that estimate with your plan’s upload allowance and its sustained upload performance. Leave headroom beyond the combined video bitrate for bitrate variation, audio, protocol overhead, household activity, and upload instability.
Calculate the electricity from measured wall power
Measure the server while it is running both streams, preferably with a wall-power meter. Use the average draw under the actual workload, not a component’s advertised maximum:
Monthly electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 × local electricity price per kWh.

For a 30-day continuous run, each 1 W of average draw uses 0.72 kWh; 10 W uses 7.2 kWh. As an illustration only, if the additional draw were 10 W and the tariff were an assumed $0.20/kWh, the added electricity cost would be $1.44 per month. That tariff and wattage are assumptions, not a typical price or measured result. At 50 W, consumption is 36 kWh per month; at 100 W, it is 72 kWh. Multiply either energy figure by your actual tariff.
If the two encoders increase CPU or GPU load, they may also raise wall power. The amount depends on the host, codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether encoding is software- or hardware-assisted. Measure your intended setup rather than relying on a generic power estimate.
Keep hardware and recurring bills separate
YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” (YouTube Help, “YouTube live streaming tips”; accessed October 3, 2026.) That does not establish that every existing computer can encode two feeds continuously. If your current server handles the workload, the added hardware cost may be zero. Otherwise, treat a suitable mini PC or server as a separate purchase, and divide its cost over the number of months you expect to use it if you want a monthly ownership estimate.

Check whether one home server can feed both streams
Two feeds require two outgoing encodes and a stable upload connection. At the recommended settings above, the video bitrates add to 10 Mbps for two 1080p30 streams or 6 Mbps for two 720p30 streams, before overhead. Your connection needs steady usable upload capacity beyond those totals, with room for other household use. A speed test is a snapshot, so test at the times you expect to stream and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a trial run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCPU/GPU suitability cannot be inferred from bitrate alone. Codec, frame rate, resolution, and encoding method affect workload; no minimum computer specification or benchmark is established here. Run both streams on the intended machine and monitor stability and resource use before depending on it continuously. YouTube automatically transcodes incoming streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so your home server sends its selected feed rather than creating separate renditions for every viewer. See OBS Project’s explanation of transcoding.
Configure the encoders and confirm YouTube eligibility
- Verify the channel and live access. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. It allows up to 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key; two active streams fit those stated numerical limits if the other eligibility conditions are met. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Set each encoder independently. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 or 3 Mbps at 720p30. Choose the resolution and frame rate each recording can support cleanly; lower settings reduce upload and payload requirements, while the visible result depends on the source video and what viewers need to see.
- Use constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with no more than 4 seconds. Its encoder settings page lists RTMP and RTMPS protocols and recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP. Google describes its RTMPS ingestion workflow at Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
- Use the correct stream key for each feed. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream for each prerecorded feed and enter the corresponding stream key in that feed’s encoder. Keep keys private; a key directs an encoder to the associated stream. Check YouTube’s current Studio workflow and test each stream before scheduling a continuous run.
- Test both feeds together. Confirm that both encoders connect, the stream-health indicators remain acceptable, audio is present if intended, and the server and home connection remain stable under simultaneous load. YouTube recommends testing the connection and monitoring stream health: encoder settings and testing guidance.
Plan for rights, archives, and recovery
Clear both the prerecorded video and audio
A file being prerecorded does not make it permissible to rebroadcast. You must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and terms, and hold the necessary rights for the live content, including music rights where applicable. YouTube’s livestream terms say providers represent that they have the necessary rights; third-party content can interrupt or terminate a live stream. Even if you believe content is licensed, a rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID for a live stream not to be interrupted. Confirm rights for both picture and sound before running either feed continuously. See YouTube’s livestream terms.

Choose between continuous broadcasts and planned archives
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, “it may not be captured at all.” YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as backup, and DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a dependable source of a complete YouTube replay. If preserving recordings matters, plan local recording or scheduled restarts before the 12-hour threshold, and include the storage and any added server workload in your setup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Build your own monthly worksheet
- Choose each feed’s actual resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Use the encoder settings you will run, not a theoretical maximum.
- Add the two video bitrates. The combined Mbps is the approximate steady video upload load; plan additional upload headroom for audio, overhead, variation, and household use.
- Estimate payload. Multiply combined Mbps by 324 for decimal GB per 30-day month. Treat it as an estimate excluding overhead, then check your ISP’s allowance and overage terms.
- Measure power at the wall. Average watts × 0.72 gives kWh for a continuous 30-day run. Multiply that by your local price per kWh.
- Itemize hardware separately. Put zero for new hardware if existing equipment is adequate; otherwise record the one-time purchase and optionally divide it across your planned ownership period.
- Add archive needs if applicable. Local recordings require storage and may add encoding or disk workload. Decide how much retention you need before choosing capacity.
This produces a location- and equipment-specific estimate without pretending that one server’s electricity bill or one ISP’s data terms apply everywhere.
Common problems and practical fixes
- Both streams buffer or show poor stream health: the combined bitrate may be too close to usable upload capacity, or the connection may be unstable. Test at the intended time, reduce one or both bitrates, and reserve headroom for other upload use.
- One feed drops when the second starts: the network may lack steady capacity, or the host may not sustain both encodes. Test simultaneous operation, check server load, and lower resolution or frame rate if the source and intended presentation allow it.
- The encoder connects but the wrong broadcast appears: verify that each encoder has the stream key for its intended YouTube stream, and that the corresponding Studio stream is configured and live.
- The stream disconnects repeatedly: check the home connection, encoder logs, and YouTube stream health; test RTMPS as recommended by YouTube. An unstable home internet connection or host can still interrupt a self-hosted setup.
- A live stream is interrupted over music or video: stop rebroadcasting until rights are confirmed. A belief that content is licensed does not ensure uninterrupted live use if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.
- A long broadcast has no complete replay: streams over 12 hours may not be captured in YouTube’s archive. Use local recording or restart on a schedule shorter than the archive threshold if a replay is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
