Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The service limits identify which IP prefixes may reach each enabled service; the firewall blocks other traffic to the router. Disable services you do not use, check MAC-based management separately, and keep an existing safe administration path while testing changes.
What you need to decide first
Before changing the router, identify the trusted management subnet or fixed administrator addresses, the router’s actual LAN and WAN interface lists, and which of WinBox, SSH, and WebFig you need. Do not copy an example subnet without confirming that it matches the devices you will administer from.

- List the management clients and their source IP addresses or prefixes.
- Confirm which router interfaces are trusted and which face untrusted networks.
- Decide whether you need WinBox, SSH, WebFig over HTTPS, or some combination.
- Check the existing firewall rules and their order, including IPv4 and IPv6 policy.
Restrict each IP service by source address
In WinBox, open IP > Services, or use the /ip service menu. Disable services you do not need. For each enabled management service, set its address property to the trusted source IP address or prefix. MikroTik documents this property as an IP-prefix restriction, including IPv4 and IPv6 prefixes. See MikroTik’s RouterOS Services documentation.

WebFig’s HTTP and HTTPS controls are separate. If WebFig is needed only over an encrypted connection, disable the plain HTTP service and retain HTTPS with the appropriate source restriction.

- hEX also known as RB750Gr3 is a five port Gigabit Ethernet router for locations where wireless connectivity is not required
- The device has a full size USB port. This new updated revision of the hEX brings several improvements in performance
- It is affordable, small and easy to use, but at the same time comes with a very powerful dual core 880MHz CPU and 256MB RAM
- IPsec hardware encryption (~470 Mbps) and The Dude server package is supported, microSD slot on it provides improved r/w speed for file storage and Dude
- Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button
This setting restricts access at the service, but is not a substitute for firewall filtering. MikroTik says: “This option is best suited for restricting access within trusted networks. To block access from external or untrusted networks, we recommend using a Firewall instead.”
Use the firewall input chain to block untrusted management traffic
Traffic addressed to the router itself is handled by the firewall’s input chain. Review the current policy before editing; do not blindly paste an example configuration, since interface lists, service ports, existing rules, and RouterOS versions differ. MikroTik’s firewall guidance and remote-access example explain the relevant filtering patterns.

- Wired Gigabit Router – 5x Gigabit Ethernet ports, 2.5G SFP, PoE-Out, USB, powered by RouterOS
- Preserve appropriate existing-state handling. Keep the established firewall design, including its handling of established and related connections where appropriate.
- Add narrowly scoped management allows. Permit only the needed management protocols and destination ports from the trusted source prefixes and trusted interface or interfaces.
- Keep allows ahead of broader drops. Firewall rules are evaluated in order. An earlier drop can prevent a later allow from taking effect; MikroTik explicitly warns about this in its remote-access example.
- Retain the untrusted-traffic block. Ensure the input policy still blocks management access arriving from WAN or other untrusted interfaces, unless a deliberate, secured remote-access design calls for it.
- Review both IP families. Check IPv4 and IPv6 rules. An IPv4 restriction does not establish that IPv6 management traffic is restricted too.
Service restrictions and firewall filtering complement one another:

/ip service address |
At the management service | Source IP prefixes for that service | Limits which sources may access the service, but does not itself provide the firewall’s network-level filtering. |
| Firewall input chain | At the router’s network firewall | Depending on the rules: interface, source, protocol, destination port, and IP family | Can drop untrusted traffic before it reaches the service; correct rule order is essential. |
Make and test the change without losing access
A restrictive rule can lock out administrators if the source prefix is wrong or the allow rule sits below a drop. Use a staged change rather than ending the session immediately after applying it.
- Keep your current administrative session open.
- Add the intended trusted-source allow rule and inspect its position and match conditions.
- From a second session on a trusted client, test the management method you intend to keep.
- Test from an untrusted source where practical and confirm that access is denied.
- Retain local or out-of-band recovery access when available, and only then close the original session.
Check MAC-based management separately
MAC WinBox is a separate access path from the IP-based WinBox service and its address setting. Review MAC-based services independently. MikroTik recommends disabling MAC-Telnet, MAC-WinBox, and MAC-Ping on production networks when they are not needed. If MAC WinBox is required, limit it to the necessary interface list; otherwise, set it to none. See MikroTik’s neighbor discovery and MAC-server documentation.
Remote administration and ongoing security
Avoid exposing management services broadly to the internet. MikroTik says its preconfigured firewall blocks WAN connections and advises securing intentional remote access with a VPN: “If you intend to open remote access to your device, we recommend securing the connection using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) such as WireGuard.” Read MikroTik’s Securing your router guidance and verify the VPN and firewall design against your RouterOS release and network topology.

Keep RouterOS updated and preserve the router’s WAN-blocking protections. If you need a recovery method beyond network access, verify the exact router model’s hardware documentation before relying on a console connection; connector availability varies by device.
Service access is not account authorization
Source restrictions and firewall rules control which network paths can reach management services. They do not decide what an authenticated account is allowed to do. RouterOS user groups have distinct policies for SSH, WebFig, and WinBox access; review the account permissions as a separate control. See MikroTik’s user documentation.
