1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo test an Ethernet cable run after installation, disconnect it from network equipment and test both ends with a tool suited to the question you need answered. A basic wiremap tester can find common wiring faults; a qualification tester checks whether the link can support a target speed or application; and a certifier tests whether the installed link meets a specified cabling standard. These results are not interchangeable.
Choose the test that answers your question
| Your question | Test class | What the result tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Are the conductors connected and wired correctly? | Verification or wiremap | Basic connectivity and, depending on the tester, faults such as opens, shorts, and crossed wires. | Whether the link meets a full Category or Class specification. Fluke Networks’ testing guide distinguishes verification from higher-level tests. |
| Can the link support the intended network speed or application? | Qualification | Whether the link appears capable of supporting an application or speed covered by the tester. | Formal standards compliance. Fluke Networks notes that qualification testing does not officially establish that a link is standards-compliant. Source. |
| Does the installed link meet a specified cabling category or class? | Certification | Measured performance against the selected standard and test limits. | A valid result without the correct tester, adapters, test limit, and link configuration. Fluke Networks’ overview of cable testing describes certification parameters. |
| Could the problem involve the network or PoE, not just the cable? | Cable and network tester with those functions | May add diagnostics such as ping, switch information, or PoE status, if the particular model supports them. | Those features are not included in every basic wiremap tester. LinkIQ’s product description is one example of a tool with additional diagnostics. |
If all you need is to catch a mis-termination, a basic Ethernet cable tester may be enough. If you need to confirm a target service or speed, choose a qualification-capable tester. If a client, specification, or warranty requires evidence of category or class compliance, use certification equipment and the required test setup.

How to run a basic wiremap test
- Disconnect the run from network equipment. Unplug it from switches, routers, computers, and other connected devices before attaching a cable tester. Check the tester’s instructions to confirm that it supports the cable and connectors you installed.
- Connect the tester at both ends. Attach its transmitter to one end of the run and its remote unit to the other. For a fixed run, these may be the two terminated outlets or the patch-panel end and remote outlet. Fluke’s general guidance describes placing the transmitter and remote at opposite ends. See Fluke’s tester walkthrough.
- Run the wiremap or verification test. Read the tester’s display or indicator sequence and consult its manual for the model-specific fault codes. A result may reveal an open conductor, short, or crossed wiring, depending on the instrument.
- Correct faults and test again. Inspect the terminations at both ends and repair the wiring issue indicated by the tester. Repeat the test after re-terminating.
A wiremap pass means only that the cable passed the checks performed by that instrument. It is not proof that a Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A installation meets its full performance specification.

Use a qualification tester when your practical question is whether the run can support an intended Ethernet speed or application. Select the relevant application or speed test offered by the instrument, then follow its connection and setup instructions. The result addresses capability for the supported test; it is not a standards-based certification report.

Some higher-capability tools combine cable performance checks with network diagnostics. For example, Fluke describes its LinkIQ as validating cable performance up to 10 Gb/s using frequency-based measurements and wiremap, and lists ping, nearest-switch, and PoE information among its features. Those are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not functions to assume in every tester. See the LinkIQ product information.
When certification is required
Certification is the appropriate test when you need documented evidence that installed cabling meets a stated Category or Class standard. The selected test limit and configuration must match the job: certification requirements vary with the target standard and whether you are testing a permanent link or another link configuration. Common test parameters can include length and wiremap, as well as electrical transmission measurements such as attenuation, NEXT, DC loop resistance, and return loss. The required measurements depend on the applicable standard and limit. Fluke Networks’ overview describes these types of measurements.

Permanent-link certification
A permanent-link test is used to certify the fixed cabling infrastructure and is typically performed during installation. It tests the permanent cabling rather than treating a device’s link light as evidence that the installation meets a cabling standard. Fluke Networks’ certification methods guide explains the permanent-link test purpose.
Keep the report when documentation matters
Save the certification report with the project records when handover documentation or warranty evidence is required. Fluke says many structured-cabling manufacturers require certification for warranties, but requirements differ; check the actual warranty and project specification rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere. If the cable passes but the connection still fails
A successful wiremap test rules out only the wiring faults the tester checks. Continue with appropriate diagnostics for the rest of the connection: the switch or router, port configuration, patch cords, PoE requirements, and connected device. A tool that includes network functions such as ping, switch discovery, or PoE checks can help investigate those separate symptoms; a basic wiremap tester may not offer them. Fluke’s LinkIQ feature list illustrates the distinction.

Search for an “Ethernet cable tester” if you need a basic tool, but check its capabilities before buying: the phrase covers products that provide different levels of testing. A low-cost wiremap model can be useful for finding common wiring faults, but it is not a substitute for a certifier when you must prove standards compliance.
