How to Restrict Mature Content, Voice Chat, and Spending on PlayStation and Xbox

The reliable way to protect a child on PlayStation or Xbox is to use a separate child account managed by an adult family account. Set age and content limits, restrict communication, and require approval for purchases on that child profile—not on the adult account the child could otherwise use.

PlayStation uses a family manager and child accounts, with age levels, preset restriction levels, Allowed Games, communication controls, spending limits, and parent-approved exceptions. Xbox uses a Microsoft family organizer, child profiles, Xbox privacy and online-safety controls, Microsoft Family Safety, and Ask a parent purchase approval. The labels and app layouts can change by console generation, region, or account type, but the control model remains the same.

Start with the correct account structure

Parental controls are attached to an account. If a child plays through the adult’s unrestricted account, console settings cannot reliably enforce the child’s age, communication, or spending rules. Create or select a dedicated child account before changing any limits.

  • PlayStation: the adult is the family manager; the child uses a separate child account. PlayStation says each child needs a separate child account for online services.
  • Xbox: the adult is the Microsoft family organizer; the child is added as a child member whose profile is managed by that organizer.
  • Credentials: keep the adult account password, console passcode, and payment authentication private. Do not leave the adult profile signed in for a child to select.

After adding the child, sign in to the child profile once and confirm that the date of birth and family membership are correct. A wrong birth date can produce inappropriate default permissions or make legitimate settings appear unavailable.

Use the child profile consistently on every console. A restriction cannot protect play that occurs through a guest profile, another adult account, or a separate account created inside a game. If several children use the same console, give each one an individual profile so approvals, age levels, contacts, and spending history remain separate.

PlayStation: block mature games and user-generated content

Open the child’s family controls

  1. Sign in as the family manager.
  2. On a PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
  3. Select the child and open the parental-control settings.

PlayStation’s Family app and Account Management web tools use the same family-management model, so you can make changes away from the console. The exact screen names can vary with the console generation and account region.

Set an age level and a preset

For games and apps, set the child’s age level first. Then use the available preset restriction level to apply a broad baseline. Age levels are the fastest way to prevent games or applications above the child’s permitted rating from starting.

Presets are useful for a first pass, but they are not a substitute for checking individual titles. A game can include online interaction, user-generated material, or a rating detail that matters to your household even when the title falls within the selected age band. Revisit the level when the child’s age changes rather than simply removing all restrictions.

Use Allowed Games for exceptions

If the broad age setting blocks a particular game that you have reviewed, use Allowed Games rather than raising the child’s general age level. When a blocked game is selected, the child can request an exception. The family manager, or a parent or guardian appointed in the family, can approve that request in Family Management or the Family app.

This creates a narrow exception: the approved title is available without opening every game in the next age category. Review the title’s own online and communication features before approving it. Keep a short record of why an exception was granted, and remove it if the game adds a new social feature or the child no longer needs access.

Restrict voice chat, messaging, and user-generated content

On the child’s PlayStation profile, choose Communication and User-Generated Content > Restrict. PlayStation describes this setting as restricting communication with other players. It disables sending text messages and voice chatting with other players and can also block screenshots, video clips, broadcasts, and other players’ user-generated content.

Because the restriction covers more than voice, explain to the child that it may also prevent sharing or viewing community material. If the child needs access to one specific game, use the game’s exception or approval path rather than loosening communication for the whole account. Check the individual game afterward because a title can expose additional chat or social features through its own services.

Ask the child to report unwanted contact rather than moving to an unsupervised account. The platform restriction is an account-wide baseline; a game’s own mute, block, party, or chat controls can provide a more specific response when communication is allowed.

Control purchases with a monthly limit

  1. On PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
  2. Select the child.
  3. Open Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
  4. Set the amount you are willing to allow for that child during a calendar month.

PlayStation states that the default monthly limit is 0. Purchases made by the child use the family manager’s wallet, so a nonzero limit authorizes spending from that wallet up to the amount you set. A zero limit blocks the child’s purchases while leaving the adult’s account able to buy normally.

For an additional safeguard, enable Require Password at Checkout on the family manager account. This helps prevent a purchase if someone reaches the adult account or attempts to use its stored payment method. Keep the password private; a checkout prompt is only useful when the child cannot supply the password. Check both the monthly limit and checkout-password setting after changing payment details or adding another console.

Manage PlayStation settings from a phone or browser

Use the PlayStation Family app or Account Management tools to review the child, approve an Allowed Games request, and adjust restrictions without using the console. After changing a control while the child is playing, have the child sign out and back in. PlayStation notes that a setting change may not take effect in the active session until the profile reconnects.

A change made for the child account applies to that child’s other PlayStation devices after reconnection. This is useful when a child moves between consoles, but it also means a mistake can follow the account everywhere. Verify the selected child and the final value before saving.

Xbox: control content, communication, time, and purchases

Add the child to Microsoft Family

  1. Sign in with the adult Microsoft account that will act as the family organizer.
  2. Add the child to the Microsoft family and use the child’s profile for Xbox play.
  3. Open the child’s profile in the Xbox Family Settings app and select the settings icon to manage controls.

Xbox restrictions follow the child’s Microsoft account and connected devices. That means a rule can affect Xbox, Windows, and supported Android use when the same family member is selected. Confirm that the child is not using a second Microsoft account on a computer or mobile device.

Limit mature content and online interaction

Open the child’s Privacy & online safety controls. Microsoft recommends combining several settings rather than relying on one switch:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Apply content restrictions or age limits appropriate to the child.
  • Limit online interactions to people the parent approves.
  • Set message filtering to child default, which provides the child-oriented baseline.
  • Review who can communicate, follow, or interact with the child through Xbox services.

Xbox’s privacy controls govern the Microsoft account, but an individual game can implement its own chat, friends, or age gate. After applying the platform settings, open each regularly used game and inspect its communication and privacy menus. If a game requires a separate publisher account, apply its age and communication controls there too.

Turn on Ask a parent for purchases

On the console, sign in with the organizer account and follow this path:

  1. Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members.
  2. Select the child.
  3. Open Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download.
  4. Turn on Ask a parent.

With Ask a parent enabled, the child must request approval before buying from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s Xbox Gaming Safety Toolkit also recommends using spending limits. Set a limit that matches your household rule, and do not store an adult payment method in a way that lets the child bypass the approval flow.

Test the approval path without completing a transaction. A request should identify the child account and require the organizer’s action. If a purchase is made from an adult profile, Ask a parent does not turn that adult purchase into a child approval request.

Set daily game and app limits

Microsoft Family Safety can set daily limits across connected Xbox, Windows, and Android devices:

  1. Open Microsoft Family Safety and select the family member.
  2. Choose Xbox.
  3. Tap Set time limits > Apps, features, and games.
  4. Enable limits and choose the daily schedule.

Use a schedule that reflects the child’s routine rather than setting one large weekly total. Check the individual game or app entry so a frequently used title receives the intended limit. Because the limit follows the family member, confirm that each connected device is signed in to that same Microsoft account.

Combine platform controls with child-level tools

Explain how the child can mute or block another player and how to use friendly-content message filters. Microsoft recommends these user controls alongside organizer settings. They give the child an immediate response to harassment or unwanted contact instead of requiring an adult to change the entire account. Practice the mute and block steps before the child needs them during a live game.

Check that restrictions are actually working

Test with the child profile, not the adult profile

After saving settings, sign out of the adult account and test from the child account. Try one title above the permitted age level, open the communication screen, and begin a test purchase without completing it. The expected result is a block, an approval request, or a password prompt, depending on the control you enabled.

Reconnect every active session

Have the child sign out and back in after changing PlayStation controls while a game is running. Also restart or relaunch the game if it maintains its own online session. On Xbox, close and reopen the game and verify that the child is using the managed Microsoft profile.

Inspect the game’s own settings

Platform controls and game controls can interact. A game may offer separate voice, text, party, friend, or user-generated-content options. Review those menus for every title the child uses, especially games that connect to third-party services. If the game asks for a separate account, apply the child’s age and communication rules there as well.

Review exceptions and approvals periodically

On PlayStation, check the Allowed Games list and any parent-approved requests. On Xbox, review approved contacts, purchase requests, and the child’s privacy settings. Remove an exception when the child no longer needs it or when a game changes its online features. Repeat the review after a console, game, or account update.

Troubleshoot common failures

A mature game still launches

  • Confirm the child is not using the adult account.
  • Check the child’s date of birth and family membership.
  • Recheck the age level and preset, then sign out and back in.
  • Look for an Allowed Games approval on PlayStation or a game-specific permission on Xbox.

Voice chat is still available

  • On PlayStation, verify that Communication and User-Generated Content is set to Restrict for the child.
  • On Xbox, review Privacy & online safety, approved contacts, and message filtering.
  • Open the game’s own communication menu; its chat may be provided by a separate service.
  • Check whether the child switched to a guest, adult, or unlinked account.

A purchase goes through without approval

  • Confirm the purchase was attempted from the child profile.
  • On PlayStation, verify Monthly Spending Limit and enable Require Password at Checkout on the family manager account.
  • On Xbox, verify that Ask a parent is on under Buy & download and that the child is in the organizer’s Microsoft family.
  • Remove saved payment details from any adult profile the child can access and change the adult account password if it may have been exposed.

A time limit does not apply

  • Confirm that the game or app is listed in the selected family member’s limits.
  • Check that the child is signed in with the Microsoft account that has the schedule.
  • On connected devices, verify that the same Microsoft family member is being used.
  • Close and relaunch the game after changing the schedule.

A practical setup order for families

  1. Create or verify the separate child account and its date of birth.
  2. Set the broad age and content limits.
  3. Restrict communication and configure approved contacts or message filtering.
  4. Turn on purchase approval, set spending limits, and protect the adult checkout credentials.
  5. Add only the games you have reviewed as exceptions.
  6. Set daily time limits where needed.
  7. Test the child profile, reconnect active sessions, and inspect each game’s own controls.
  8. Review approvals, contacts, and limits on a regular schedule, particularly after a console, game, or account update.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I manage PlayStation or Xbox parental controls from my phone?

Yes. PlayStation provides the PlayStation Family app and Account Management tools for family settings, exceptions, and restrictions. Xbox provides the Xbox Family Settings app, while Microsoft Family Safety manages time and game limits across connected Xbox, Windows, and supported Android devices. Names and screens can vary by region and account type.

Does blocking voice chat also block text messages?

On PlayStation, setting Communication and User-Generated Content to Restrict disables both sending text messages and voice chatting with other players. It can also block screenshots, clips, broadcasts, and other players’ user-generated content. Xbox uses privacy, approved-contact, and message-filtering controls, and a particular game may apply additional rules.

How do I let my child play one mature-rated game without opening all mature games?

On PlayStation, keep the general age level in place and use Allowed Games for a reviewed title. The child can request an exception, and the family manager or appointed parent or guardian can approve it in Family Management or the Family app. Inspect that game’s own chat and social settings before approving.

What is the safest PlayStation spending setting?

Set the child’s Monthly Spending Limit to 0 to block purchases. If you choose a nonzero amount, purchases use the family manager’s wallet up to that monthly limit. Also enable Require Password at Checkout on the family manager account and keep that password private.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How does Xbox purchase approval work?

From the organizer account, select the child under Family settings, open Privacy & online safety, then Xbox Live privacy, View details & customize, and Buy & download. Turn on Ask a parent. The child must request approval before buying from the Microsoft Store. Set a spending limit as an additional household rule.

Will a platform restriction control every game’s chat?

Not always. Platform controls establish the account baseline, but some games and third-party services provide separate voice, text, party, friend, or age controls. Review the communication menus in every game the child uses and apply equivalent restrictions to any separate publisher account.

Why did a setting not change immediately?

PlayStation says the child should sign out and back in after a change, especially if a game was already running. On Xbox, close and reopen the game and confirm the managed Microsoft profile is active. A game may also need to reconnect its own online session before the new rule appears.

Can one setting protect a child on multiple consoles?

PlayStation account settings apply to the child’s other PlayStation devices after the profile reconnects. Xbox limits follow the child’s Microsoft account and can apply across connected Xbox, Windows, and supported Android devices. Check which account is active on each device; guest or adult profiles are outside the child’s controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use a separate child account, apply age and communication restrictions, require purchase approval, and test the child profile. PlayStation offers age levels, Allowed Games, a communication restriction, and a zero-default monthly spending limit; Xbox combines privacy controls, approved contacts, Ask a parent, and Microsoft Family Safety. Recheck each game’s own settings and reconnect sessions after changes.
