How to Restore Your Previous Session in Windows 11 Browsers

Learn how to reopen recently closed tabs and configure Chrome or Firefox to restore your previous session on Windows 11, plus where to look in Edge.

If your tabs disappeared, first try to reopen recently closed tabs or restore the browser’s previous session; then change the startup setting if you want the browser to reopen those pages automatically in the future. The steps differ by browser, and recovery is only possible while the browser still retains the relevant session information.

Restore tabs you just closed

Google Chrome

In Chrome for Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+T to reopen a recently closed tab or window. Press the shortcut again to work backward through earlier recently closed items. Google documents the shortcut in its Chrome tab and window help.

Mozilla Firefox

Open the Firefox menu and choose History > Restore Previous Session. If Firefox displays a session-restore screen after a crash or unexpected shutdown, select the tabs and windows you want and choose Restore Session. Mozilla says Firefox usually attempts to restore the last session after an unexpected shutdown, but the restore prompt is not guaranteed to appear in every case. See Mozilla’s session restore guidance.

Microsoft Edge

Open History and look for recently closed tabs or windows. If a page is no longer in the recent list, search History for it and reopen it from there. Microsoft outlines these recovery options in the Edge Learning Center.

Make the browser reopen your previous session next time

Chrome: Continue where you left off

  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu.
  2. Choose Settings > On startup.
  3. Select Continue where you left off.

Google describes this option as a way to “re-open the same pages you were looking at when you quit.” The setting is documented in Chrome Help.

Firefox: Open previous windows and tabs

  1. Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Under Home and startup page, enable Open previous windows and tabs.

Mozilla documents the startup preference and its recovery limitations in its session restore article.

Edge: Check the current startup options

Microsoft’s consumer-facing Edge guidance says the browser can be configured to reopen tabs from a previous session, but the available guidance does not specify a complete current menu path. Check Settings in your installed Edge version for the startup option; menu wording can change. On managed Windows devices, an administrator can configure the RestoreOnStartupIsLastSession policy. Microsoft’s Edge policy reference says this policy applies to domain-joined or device-managed environments, so a work or school policy may control the setting.

If the session does not come back

  • Try the browser’s recently closed tabs or previous-session command first.
  • Search History for individual pages that are missing from the recently closed list.
  • Check whether Firefox showed a recovery screen after an unexpected shutdown; it may not appear after every closure or failure.
  • Understand the limit: these are recovery options, not a way to reconstruct session data the browser has cleared or overwritten. Mozilla and Microsoft describe recovery routes, not a guarantee that every closed tab or all browser content can be restored.
