For place search, Google requires you to be signed in to Gemini with Activity on; using your device location also requires location permission.
Ask Gemini to find a place or plan a route
- Open the Gemini app on your phone, or go to gemini.google.com.
- Ask in everyday language. For example: “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?”, “Find me a park with a playground within a 10-minute drive from where I am now,” or “Give me directions to [destination].”
- Review Gemini’s response. It can use public Google Maps information to find businesses, shops, restaurants, parks and attractions, and may return addresses, descriptions, websites, ratings, opening hours and directions by transport mode. Google says you can also ask it to avoid tolls.
- Tap a linked place name or preview card to open the place details. Where available, use the offered directions or other actions to continue in Maps.
Google documents additional phone features that are rolling out gradually: opening a place from its pin on a full-screen map, viewing an interactive map of places in the chat, and exporting pinned places to a custom Google Maps list. Google says these features require a personal Google Account, that you are at least 18, and that you ask about a place in English. See Google Gemini Apps Help.

Use Gemini while navigating in Google Maps
This is a separate workflow for when you are already on a route. Start navigation in Google Maps, then ask Gemini a question or give a route instruction by voice or by tapping the Gemini icon.
- Open Google Maps and start navigating to your destination.
- Say “Hey Google” or tap the Gemini icon in navigation mode.
- Ask for the route action or information you need. Google’s examples include “Navigate home,” “Add stop,” “Avoid tolls,” “Show alternative routes” and “What’s my next turn?” You can also ask for a cafe near your destination, ask about a destination or search result, or report traffic, construction or a breakdown.
On iPhone and iPad, Google says hands-free use requires enabling “Access your Assistant with ‘Ok Google’” in navigation settings. Gemini is not currently available for CarPlay. Google describes Gemini in Maps as available in many countries and languages, but that does not guarantee availability on every device, account or in every location. Details are in Google Maps Help.

Which Gemini Maps workflow should you use?

Requirements and limits to know
For place search and directions in Gemini Apps, Google requires you to be signed in to Gemini and to keep Activity on. The feature is unavailable in Live chats and Gemini in Google Messages. Gemini may use your account’s saved Work and Home locations; it may also use your device location if you grant permission.
Gemini Apps’ Maps connection is not a substitute for every Google Maps feature. Google lists these unsupported actions in Gemini Apps: saving location history, using saved places other than Work or Home, providing live traffic updates, and adding a place review. These limits apply to the Gemini Apps place-search connection; they should not be confused with the separate Gemini-in-Maps navigation workflow, which Google documents for route answers and road-issue reports.
