If a Marketplace buyer is at your home now and you feel unsafe, move to a secure place and contact local emergency services or police. Once you are safe, save the relevant messages and details, then report the buyer’s Marketplace profile or the related listing through Facebook’s available reporting controls.
What to do if the buyer is there now
Do not open the door or confront the visitor if you feel unsafe. Move somewhere secure and call your local emergency number or police if the buyer threatens you, refuses to leave, or you otherwise believe there is an immediate risk. Meta’s guidance is explicit: “Users aware of an emergency situation should immediately and directly contact local law enforcement officials.” Meta’s Law Enforcement Guidelines explain that Meta’s emergency disclosure request route is for law-enforcement officials; it is not a substitute for contacting authorities yourself.

Preserve the details before reporting
Keep the conversation and other relevant records accessible. Save the Marketplace chat, the buyer’s name or profile link, the listing, dates and times, and a factual note of what happened. If you already have relevant footage, retain it in accordance with local law. Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs advises keeping communications on-platform because that helps users find transaction records if a problem arises. Its Facebook Marketplace guidance was last updated 30 January 2026.
How to report the buyer or Marketplace activity
- Open the relevant Marketplace page. Find the buyer’s Marketplace profile or the listing connected to the transaction.
- Use the Report control if it is available. Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs says users can look for a Report link on the listing or on the seller’s Marketplace profile. The cited guidance does not establish a dedicated report category specifically for a buyer showing up at someone’s home.
- Describe what happened accurately. Include that the visit was unannounced and note any threats, refusal to leave, or repeat visits. Stick to facts you can support.
- Keep the records. Do not delete the conversation or listing information you may need to explain the incident or provide context.
Facebook’s report process addresses platform activity and account moderation. It does not replace an emergency call or a police report. If you are threatened, feel unsafe, or face repeated unwanted visits, contact local authorities and share your saved records if requested. Police procedures and legal standards vary by location.

When to block or stop replying
If further communication is unwanted or makes you uncomfortable, stop engaging and use Facebook’s available block and report tools. Blocking can limit contact through the platform, but it cannot prevent someone from returning in person after learning your address. If the person comes back or your safety concern escalates, contact local authorities.
Can an unannounced visit be reported to police?
You can contact local police about threats, feeling unsafe, or repeated unwanted visits. Whether one unannounced visit violates the law depends on where you live and the specific facts; it is not possible to determine a universal legal outcome from the visit alone. For immediate danger, call local emergency services rather than waiting for a platform response.

Reduce risk with future Marketplace sales
- Arrange exchanges in a public, well-lit place, such as a police station where appropriate, rather than sharing your home address when it is not necessary.
- Tell someone you trust where you are going and when. Meta’s educational material recommends sharing your plan; Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs says Messenger can be used to share a meeting plan with a trusted friend or family member.
- Keep transaction communication on-platform so the conversation and relevant details remain easier to find.

The detailed Marketplace reporting instructions and scam-report figures on the cited Ministry of Home Affairs page concern Singapore. Its reported totals—4,550 scam reports in 2023 and 1,138 in 2022—are Singapore scam reports, not counts of buyers arriving at sellers’ homes and not global estimates.
