How To Restore Windows 10/11 To An Earlier Date

Use System Restore to return Windows 10 or 11 to an existing restore point without normally changing personal files. This guide covers working and unbootable PCs, missing restore points, Go back, and Point-in-time restore.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows has several recovery features that sound similar but do different jobs. System Restore is the usual way to return Windows 10 or Windows 11 to an earlier restore point without deleting personal documents. If you need to undo a recent feature upgrade, use Go back instead. On supported newer systems, Point-in-time restore can roll back the entire system drive, including local files.

This guide explains which option fits your situation, how to restore Windows from a working or unbootable PC, and what to do when the date you need is not available.

Choose the right Windows recovery option

“Restore Windows to an earlier date” usually means System Restore. However, Windows does not keep a complete snapshot of every date. You can restore only to a restore point that already exists.

Tool Best for What it changes Main limitation
System Restore Undoing a troublesome driver, application, update, or system change System files, registry settings, drivers, and some installed programs Does not recover deleted or overwritten personal files
Point-in-time restore Returning a supported system to a recent full system state Apps, settings, passwords, certificates, keys, and local files on the Windows drive Usually keeps recovery data for only about 72 hours
Go back Undoing a recent Windows version upgrade Reverts the previous Windows installation and removes later apps and drivers Normally available for approximately 10 days
Reset this PC Reinstalling or resetting Windows when other recovery options fail Windows itself, with options affecting apps and personal files It is not a date-based restore

For most problems that started after an update or software installation, begin with System Restore.

What System Restore does—and does not—restore

System Restore returns monitored Windows system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed-program information to the state recorded in a selected restore point. It may remove an application, driver, or update installed after that point.

It normally leaves documents, photos, videos, and other personal files alone. It is therefore not a substitute for a backup. If you deleted a file yesterday and want it back, use File History, Windows Backup, OneDrive, or another backup instead.

System Restore can also roll back a security update. After Windows starts normally again, open Settings > Windows Update and check for applicable updates.

Restore Windows 10 or 11 from a working PC

The System Restore wizard is nearly identical in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. In the Restore system files and settings window, select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began. If you cannot see the required entry, select Show more restore points.
  5. Select the restore point and click Scan for affected programs. Review the applications, drivers, and updates that Windows expects to remove or restore.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Read the warning and confirm. Windows will restart and apply the restore point.

Do not shut down the computer, disconnect its power, or interrupt the restart while the restore is running. The process can take several minutes and may reboot more than once.

You can open the same wizard through Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore.

Restore Windows when it will not start

If Windows can still reach the sign-in screen or desktop, use the recovery menus below. If it cannot reach Windows Recovery Environment, use Windows installation media as described later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. After the PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  4. Select your Windows account if prompted and enter its password.
  5. Choose a restore point. Use Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Select Next > Finish and confirm the operation.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  4. Choose the restore point and complete the wizard.

Windows may request the BitLocker recovery key before it allows System Restore to continue. This is normal on encrypted systems. You will need the recovery key associated with the device; a Windows account may have saved it online, depending on how the PC was configured.

Use installation media if Windows RE is unavailable

When the computer cannot open its built-in recovery environment, create Windows installation media on another working PC. Boot the affected computer from that USB drive, choose the language and keyboard options, select Next, and then choose Repair my PC. This opens Windows Recovery Environment without selecting the Windows installation option.

From there, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.

What if there are no restore points?

System Restore cannot restore an arbitrary calendar date. If the date you want is missing, Windows either never created a restore point for that time or the point has since been deleted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System Protection is disabled by default on many Windows installations. Disk-space limits, cleanup operations, and a major Windows version upgrade can also remove older points. In particular, restore points from the previous Windows installation generally do not survive an upgrade to a new Windows version.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

To check System Protection:

  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Select Create a restore point from the results.
  3. On the System Protection tab, select the Windows system drive, normally (C:).
  4. Select Configure….
  5. Choose Turn on system protection.
  6. Set the maximum disk-space usage, then select Apply.

Turning protection on now cannot create a restore point for a date in the past. It only allows Windows to create future points.

To create one manually, return to the System Protection tab, select Create…, enter a description such as Before graphics driver update, and select Create.

The same settings window can be opened directly by pressing Windows key + R, entering systempropertiesprotection.exe, and pressing Enter.

Use Point-in-time restore when it is available

Some newer Windows systems expose Point-in-time restore under Settings > System > Recovery. It is different from traditional System Restore: it can restore the entire Windows system state, including local files on the system drive.

Recovery data is normally captured about every 24 hours and retained for up to 72 hours. The default storage allocation is approximately 2% of disk space. Availability and configuration vary by Windows edition, device, and Microsoft’s rollout of the feature.

Check or enable it

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Select Point-in-time restore.
  3. Select View or edit.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt by selecting Yes.
  5. Turn the feature on if it is not already enabled.

Restore from a point-in-time snapshot

  1. Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Point-in-time restore.
  3. Enter the BitLocker recovery key if requested.
  4. Select an available restore point.
  5. Select Continue to acknowledge the warning.
  6. Review the selected point and choose Restore.

Save any files you need before starting. Point-in-time restore can remove changes made after the selected point, including local files, applications, settings, passwords, certificates, and keys. Microsoft states that files stored in cloud services such as OneDrive are not affected. Keep the PC connected to power and make sure it has sufficient free storage.

Go back after a Windows version upgrade

Use Go back if the problem began immediately after upgrading from one Windows version or build to another. It does not let you select any historical date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. If the option is available, select Go back.
  3. Answer Microsoft’s questions and follow the confirmation screens.

The option normally disappears after about 10 days. It may disappear sooner if Windows deletes the Windows.old or $Windows.~BT folders. Go back preserves personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses later Settings changes.

Windows 10 reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025. It can still run, but normal free Windows Update support, technical assistance, and security fixes have ended, subject to any applicable extended-support arrangement.

Common problems after a restore

The restore fails

Possible causes include insufficient free space, file-system corruption, changing EFS-encrypted files, unstable Volume Shadow Copy activity, or shutting down during the operation. Free up storage, keep the PC connected to power, and retry from Windows RE if the desktop-based attempt fails.

Windows will not boot after System Restore

Return to Windows RE and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. If it is offered, choose Undo system restore to reverse the failed restoration.

Microsoft Store apps stop opening

After System Restore, apps such as Notepad, Paint, Office, Cortana, and Terminal can temporarily show “This app can’t open”, duplicate Start-menu entries, input/output errors, or crashes. Try opening the app again, install it again from Microsoft Store or its original source, and run Windows Update.

The restore point is rejected on newer Windows 11 versions

Microsoft has documented a security change for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1 after the July 2026 security update when Virtualization-Based Security is enabled. Some older restore points may be inaccessible if they do not pass Microsoft’s security checks.

System Restore myths to avoid

  • “It restores Windows to any date.” No. It can use only existing restore points.
  • “It recovers personal files.” Standard System Restore is not designed for deleted or overwritten documents and photos.
  • “Reset this PC is the same thing.” Reset reinstalls or resets Windows; it does not select a historical restore point.
  • “An old restore point must still exist after an upgrade.” Major Windows version upgrades commonly disable System Restore and delete points from the previous installation.

FAQ

Will System Restore delete my personal files?

Standard System Restore normally leaves documents, photos, videos, and other personal files unchanged. It can remove apps, drivers, updates, and system changes made after the selected restore point. Point-in-time restore is broader and can remove later local-file changes.

Can I restore Windows to yesterday if there is no restore point from yesterday?

No. System Restore works only with restore points that already exist. If System Protection was disabled or Windows removed older points, that date cannot be selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does Windows Go back remain available?

Go back is normally available for about 10 days after a Windows version upgrade. It can disappear sooner if Windows deletes the Windows.old or $Windows.~BT folders.

What should I do if System Restore fails?

Retry from Windows Recovery Environment, keep the computer connected to power, and check for free storage or file-system problems. If Windows no longer boots afterward, open WinRE and use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore > Undo system restore when available.

The Bottom Line

For most Windows 10 and 11 problems, launch rstrui.exe, choose a restore point from before the problem, review affected programs, and let Windows restart without interruption. Do not expect System Restore to recover personal files or create a point for a date that was never recorded. Use backups for personal data, Go back for a recent version upgrade, and Point-in-time restore only when that newer feature is present and you understand that it can remove later local changes.
