Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) is a Microsoft compatibility package for older games and Windows applications. It adds legacy, side-by-side libraries such as d3dx9_*.dll, XInput 1.3, XAudio 2.7, XACT, Managed DirectX 1.1, and older HLSL compiler components.
It does not upgrade the DirectX version built into Windows. Installing it will not turn DirectX 11 into DirectX 12, change your graphics feature level, or replace your graphics driver. Its purpose is narrower: supplying optional components that older software may still expect.

What the June 2010 DirectX runtime contains
Windows includes the core DirectX runtime, but some older applications were built with additional libraries from Microsoft’s DirectX SDK. Those libraries were distributed separately and are not necessarily present on a modern Windows installation.
The June 2010 package includes the June 2010 components plus previously released side-by-side components, including:
#1 Best Overall
- D3DX9, D3DX10, and D3DX11 libraries
- XAudio 2.7
- XInput 1.3
- XACT
- Managed DirectX 1.1
- HLSL compiler components
These files can be required by older games even when dxdiag reports that DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 is already installed.
What it does not do
The package does not replace or update the Windows DirectX runtime. In particular, it does not install a newer version of Direct3D, DirectInput, or DirectSound supplied by Windows.
| Expectation | What actually happens |
|---|---|
| Install DirectX 12 on an older system | Not possible with this package |
| Increase a GPU’s DirectX feature level | No change |
| Upgrade DirectX 9, 11, or 12 | No; legacy side-by-side files are added |
| Fix every game startup problem | No; drivers, hardware, permissions, .NET, or game files may still be at fault |
| Remove the need for graphics drivers | No; the correct GPU driver is still required |
Your DirectX version in dxdiag may look exactly the same after installation. That is normal.
Download details
Download the package from Microsoft’s official Download Center rather than from a site offering individual DLL files:

| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Package name | DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) |
| Version | 9.29.1974.1 |
| Offline installer | directx_Jun2010_redist.exe |
| Reported download size | 95.6 MB |
| Current Microsoft page date | July 15, 2024 |
Microsoft’s formal system requirements list Windows XP SP2/SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP1/SP2, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008. The page does not formally list Windows 8, Windows 10, or Windows 11, although older software on newer Windows versions can still need these legacy libraries.
Offline redist versus Web Installer
Microsoft also provides a smaller Web Installer:
DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer — Microsoft Download Center
| Package | File | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Offline redist | directx_Jun2010_redist.exe |
Contains the required files locally after extraction |
| Web Installer | dxwebsetup.exe |
Downloads required files during setup |
The Web Installer is not a newer version of DirectX. Both packages distribute the same class of legacy end-user components. The practical difference is the delivery method.
Rank #2
Use the offline redist when:
- The computer has no Internet access.
dxwebsetup.execannot download a file.- You need to install the runtime on several computers.
- You want to keep a complete installer for an older game or application.
The current Web Installer page reports version 9.29.1974.1, filename dxwebsetup.exe, and a reported size of 288.4 KB.
How to install the offline package
The 95.6 MB executable is an extraction package. Running it does not immediately install the DirectX components. You must extract its files and then run DXSETUP.exe.
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exefrom Microsoft. - Run the downloaded executable.
- When asked where to extract the files, enter a temporary folder such as
C:DXRedist. - Open
C:DXRedistafter extraction finishes. - Run
DXSETUP.exe. - Accept the license terms and follow the DirectX Setup wizard.
- Restart Windows if the installer or the game requests it.
Do not delete the extracted folder until DXSETUP.exe has completed. The setup program needs the extracted cabinet files beside it.
Silent installation for scripts and deployments
For a game installer, deployment script, or managed installation, Microsoft documents this command:
DXSETUP.exe /silent
Run it from the directory containing DXSETUP.exe and the required cabinet files. A typical command from an extracted folder is:
cd /d C:DXRedist
DXSETUP.exe /silent
Run deployment tools with the permissions required by the target machine, and test the installer on a clean system before adding it to a large deployment.
Which problems can it fix?
The package is appropriate when an older application reports a missing legacy DirectX component, for example:
The program can't start because d3dx9_*.dll is missing from your computer.
The exact missing file may instead belong to D3DX10, D3DX11, XInput, XAudio, XACT, or Managed DirectX. Installing the official runtime is safer than downloading one DLL from an unofficial repository because the installer supplies the related files and the appropriate runtime package.

Some games include their own DirectX redistributable in a folder such as _CommonRedistDirectXJun2010. If so, that bundled installer may be the version selected by the game publisher. Otherwise, use Microsoft’s Download Center package.
Common installation errors
“Setup could not download the file”
This normally points to the Web Installer failing to retrieve one of its files. Check the network connection, proxy, firewall, and security software, or skip the downloader and use directx_Jun2010_redist.exe instead.
“An internal system error occurred”
This message is not specific enough to identify the cause. Check these installer logs:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
C:WindowsDXError.log
C:WindowsDirectX.log
Depending on the system, the log may show a legacy .NET check, a damaged Windows component, or a failure to register a DLL. The generic error alone does not prove that the Windows DirectX runtime is missing.
S1023
S1023 is often associated with installing the DirectX SDK June 2010, which is a developer kit. The SDK is not a replacement for the End-User Runtimes. Do not install the SDK merely because a game reports a missing legacy DLL.
Failed API: GetCORVersion()
This log entry can indicate a failure during a legacy .NET Framework check. Inspect the complete DXError.log and DirectX.log before attempting random DirectX repairs. Reinstalling a modern DirectX version is unlikely to resolve a setup failure caused by that check.
Error 193: “%1 is not a valid Win32 application”
An entry such as:
Error: (193) - %1 is not a valid Win32 application.
can indicate a corrupted file, an incompatible architecture, or a DLL that is not the expected DirectX component. Download the package again from Microsoft and do not replace Windows or game DLLs with files from third-party download sites.

Why downloading one DLL is a bad fix
A missing d3dx9_*.dll message may make a single-file download look like the quickest solution, but that approach can leave the application with the wrong version or architecture. It can also omit related libraries and expose the computer to tampered files.
Rank #4
Install the official June 2010 runtime, or run the redistributable supplied with the game. If the error remains, check whether the game is 32-bit, whether its files are damaged, and whether the required component belongs to another Microsoft runtime.
Can the runtime be uninstalled?
Microsoft states that the DirectX runtime cannot be uninstalled. The June 2010 package is designed to install side-by-side legacy components and does not provide a normal uninstall path in Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
A game may show its own bundled installer in the installed-programs list, but removing that entry does not necessarily remove every legacy component installed by DirectX Setup. Do not manually delete DLLs from Windows folders.

DirectX runtime facts worth remembering
- It is a compatibility package, not a DirectX generation upgrade.
- The offline package extracts files before
DXSETUP.exeperforms the installation. - The Web Installer downloads files; it is not newer than the offline redist.
- Windows 10 and Windows 11 can still run older software that needs these optional libraries.
- The DirectX SDK June 2010 is for developers and is separate from the end-user runtime.
- Official runtime installation is safer than copying individual DLLs.
FAQ
Does DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 install DirectX 12?
No. It installs legacy side-by-side libraries used by older applications. It does not change the DirectX version, feature level, or core Direct3D runtime supplied by Windows.
Should I use the Web Installer or the offline redist?
Use the Web Installer when the computer can download files normally. Use directx_Jun2010_redist.exe for offline machines, repeated installations, or cases where the Web Installer reports that it cannot download a file.
Why does the downloaded redist ask me where to extract files?
The executable is an extraction package. After extraction, open the selected folder and run DXSETUP.exe to install the components.
Can I fix a missing d3dx9 DLL by downloading that DLL alone?
It is safer to install the official June 2010 runtime or the game’s bundled Microsoft redistributable. Individual DLL downloads can have the wrong version or architecture and may be unsafe.

Install directx_Jun2010_redist.exe when an older game or application needs legacy D3DX, XInput 1.3, XAudio 2.7, XACT, or related components. Extract it, run DXSETUP.exe, and use the Microsoft logs if setup fails. Do not expect it to upgrade Windows DirectX, and do not substitute the developer SDK or an unofficial single-DLL download.
