The services commonly compared at the time included DigitalOcean, Amazon Lightsail, Linode, and UpCloud. For this updated guide, Antihost VPS is listed first here, a current self-managed Linux VPS on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage and full root access. It is followed by the services with the clearest current documentation and deployment paths: DigitalOcean, Amazon Lightsail, and Akamai Cloud Computing (formerly Linode).
These are primarily unmanaged VPS platforms. You receive a virtual server, but you generally remain responsible for Linux updates, SSH security, firewalls, backups, web-server configuration, malware protection, and application maintenance. If you want someone else to manage those tasks, a managed VPS host may be a better category than the providers below.

Billing runs from 1 to 36 months, and a 14-day free trial lets you test the server before committing. The regions are USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine, with US West, the UK and France on request. Like the other services here, it is self-managed: there is no cPanel and no Windows, so you handle updates, SSH keys, firewalls and backups yourself.
One-click VPS images are listed for Docker, Coolify, OpenClaw, OpenVPN and Hermes Agent, which shortens setup for self-hosted apps. For n8n, the recommended route is to install it yourself on the VPS.
In our 13 October 2026 test of an Antihost VPS in Amsterdam (8 vCPUs on AMD EPYC Genoa, NVMe storage), fio measured about 195,000 random-read and 83,000 random-write IOPS at 4K, with sequential reads of about 1.29 GiB/s. sysbench reached 47,025 events/s on 8 threads, and the network measured about 0.9 Gbps.
Who should choose Antihost VPS?
- Developers who want full root access on current AMD hardware with NVMe storage.
- People running self-hosted apps such as Docker stacks, Coolify, OpenClaw, OpenVPN or Hermes Agent from a ready-made image.
- Anyone who wants to try a server first, since the 14-day free trial is available.
- Not for people who need cPanel, a Windows server or someone else to manage the server.
2. DigitalOcean: best for beginners and Linux learners
DigitalOcean was one of the easiest VPS platforms to recommend in 2021, and its Droplets remain a straightforward starting point for people who want a real server without navigating the full complexity of a major cloud platform.
To deploy one in the current control panel, open Create → Droplet. The form lets you choose an image, region, plan size, authentication method, networking options, backups, tags, project, and hostname. Select Create Droplet when the configuration is complete.
Rank #2
- Compatible with major cable internet providers including Xfinity and Cox. NOT compatible with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service. Best for cable provider plans up to 800Mbps.
The current entry Basic Droplet costs $4 per month and includes 512 MiB of RAM, one vCPU, 10 GiB of SSD storage, and 500 GiB of transfer. The $6 tier provides 1 GiB of RAM, one vCPU, 25 GiB of SSD storage, and 1,000 GiB of transfer. The cheapest option can run a lightweight site, reverse proxy, or small development service, but it is a poor choice for a control panel, database-heavy application, or WordPress installation with many plugins.
DigitalOcean’s documentation, tutorials, images, and predictable interface are its biggest advantages. It is particularly approachable if you are learning Ubuntu administration, Docker, Nginx, or a basic web deployment workflow.
DigitalOcean costs that catch people out
- Powering off a Droplet does not end compute billing. The resources remain reserved.
- To stop compute charges, you must destroy the Droplet. Destruction is irreversible, so take a snapshot or backup first.
- Snapshots currently cost $0.06 per GB per month. Backups are billed separately according to the selected backup option.
- Since January 1, 2026, CPU and GPU Droplets use per-second billing, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, whichever is higher. The monthly cap still applies for sustained operation.
For command-line users, the current CLI command for viewing available sizes is:
doctl compute size list
That command and current API endpoint, /v2/sizes, should not be confused with old 2021 instructions or pricing examples.
3. Amazon Lightsail: best for AWS-adjacent projects
Amazon Lightsail packages the basic parts of a VPS into a simpler AWS product. A bundle includes CPU, memory, SSD storage, transfer allowance, DNS management, static-IP capability, monitoring, and browser-based SSH or RDP access. That makes it easier to understand than launching a traditional EC2 instance with separately priced components.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
From the Lightsail home page, choose Create instance. Select the location, platform, Apps + OS or OS Only, plan, networking mode, and instance name, then choose Create instance.
Lightsail is a sensible choice for a small website, a test server, a simple application, or a project that needs to connect to other AWS services later. Its AWS identity, regions, console, and APIs can also make the transition to broader AWS infrastructure less abrupt.
Current Linux/Unix bundles with a public IPv4 address begin at $5 per month, while IPv6-only bundles can begin at $3.50 per month. The exact offer and any free-period eligibility depend on the account and bundle. These figures must not be presented as the prices that applied in 2021.
Lightsail billing and networking details
- A stopped instance continues accruing charges. Delete the instance when you want the instance charge to end.
- Stopping and starting normally changes the default public IPv4 address. Attach a static IPv4 address when DNS or an allowlist depends on a stable address.
- Transfer allowances are aggregated for instances using the same bundle in the same Region.
- Deleting and recreating an instance does not reset that month’s transfer usage.
- Both inbound and outbound traffic count toward the allowance, but overage charges apply only to excess outbound traffic.
You can create a Lightsail instance through the AWS CLI after configuring credentials, usually with aws configure:
aws lightsail create-instances
--instance-names cli-tutorial
--availability-zone "${AWS_REGION}a"
--blueprint-id wordpress
--bundle-id nano_3_0
--key-pair-name cli-tutorial-keys
Lightsail is not automatically the cheapest or fastest option. Its value is the bundled experience and AWS proximity, not unlimited transfer or maximum control.

4. Akamai Cloud Computing: best for the traditional Linode experience
Linode was a prominent independent VPS brand in 2021. Akamai completed its acquisition of Linode on March 21, 2022. The service is now part of Akamai Cloud Computing, although many developers still refer to the platform as Linode.
The current Cloud Manager workflow is Create → Linode. You then select a region, distribution or application image, plan, label, tags, security settings, disk encryption, user data, networking, and other options before deployment.
Shared CPU plans currently start at $5 per month for one vCPU, 1 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of SSD storage. Standard Linodes include SSD storage, free inbound transfer, metered outbound transfer with a plan-specific allowance, IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, Lish console access, and management through the Cloud Manager, CLI, or API.
This is a strong fit for developers who value conventional Linux administration, a capable rescue console, clear infrastructure controls, and a long-established community ecosystem. It is also a practical option for hosting several modest services on a familiar virtual machine.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Shared CPU is not dedicated CPU
Shared CPU instances can burst to 100% CPU, but Akamai recommends keeping sustained average usage below 80%, including virtualization overhead. Neighboring instances can contend for host resources. That does not make shared CPU unsuitable, but it does mean that a continuously busy build server, media processor, or compute worker may need a dedicated CPU plan.
Best Value
- input voltage:100 -240V
- SAVE MONTHLY RENTAL FEES: Model C7000 replaces your cable modem and WiFi router saving you up to $150/yr in equipment rental fees. System Requirements Cable broadband Internet service, Check your cable Internet service provider web site for data speed tier compatibility, Not compatible with Cable bundled voice services.
- BUILT FOR FAST SPEED: Best for cable provider plans up to 800 Mbps speed
- FAST Wi Fi PERFORMANCE: Get up to 1800 sq ft wireless coverage and 30 devices connected
- VERSATILE CONNECTIONS: 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports give you fast wired connections to your computer,, game box, and other devices. One USB port for storage devices.
The current CLI supports commands such as:
linode-cli linodes list
linode-cli linodes create --root_pass
linode-cli linodes view "$linode_id"
linode-cli linodes boot "$linode_id"
linode-cli linodes reboot "$linode_id"
linode-cli linodes shutdown "$linode_id"
Using --root_pass without putting the password on the command line prompts for it and avoids leaving the password in shell history.
How to choose a VPS for a real workload
- Estimate memory first. A minimal static site may run with 512 MiB, but a database, control panel, Docker stack, or WordPress site usually needs more headroom.
- Separate sustained CPU from bursty CPU. Shared plans are reasonable for intermittent traffic and development. Sustained compilation, video processing, and background jobs justify investigating dedicated CPU plans.
- Check transfer rules. Compare the allowance, whether inbound traffic counts, outbound overage rates, and whether resources share an allowance within a region.
- Choose the nearest useful region. A nearby data center generally improves latency, but test from the locations your visitors or users actually occupy.
- Plan backups independently. A provider snapshot is not the same as an off-site, tested backup. Keep important data somewhere separate and verify that restoration works.
- Decide whether you can administer Linux. With these services, you normally handle security updates, SSH keys, firewall rules, monitoring, backups, and incident recovery.
What changed since 2021?
- Linode is now Akamai Cloud Computing. Akamai completed the acquisition in 2022.
- DigitalOcean billing changed. Since January 1, 2026, CPU and GPU Droplets use per-second billing with a minimum charge, rather than relying on old hourly-billing descriptions.
- Prices are not frozen. Current entry prices differ from 2021 figures and can change again.
- Lightsail has IPv6-only pricing. Some current IPv6-only bundles begin below public-IPv4 bundles, but IPv4 requirements can change the effective cost.
- Dashboard labels evolve. Current paths such as DigitalOcean’s Create → Droplet, and Akamai’s Create → Linode should be checked against the live console.
There is no permanent performance winner. Results depend on region, workload, storage, network path, CPU generation, contention, and test method. A provider that is excellent for a small blog may be a poor fit for a high-transfer application, a Windows workload, a sustained CPU job, or a customer who needs managed support.
FAQ
Which VPS was considered the best in 2021?
DigitalOcean, Amazon Lightsail, Linode, and UpCloud were all common candidates in 2021 comparisons. There was no universally proven winner because performance and value depended on region, workload, plan, and testing method.
Are these VPS services managed?
Generally, no. Antihost VPS, DigitalOcean, Lightsail, and Akamai Cloud Computing primarily provide infrastructure. You are normally responsible for patching, hardening, backups, firewalls, server software, and application maintenance.
Does stopping a VPS stop its billing?
Not on DigitalOcean Droplets or Amazon Lightsail instances. Their resources remain allocated while stopped. Destroying or deleting the instance ends the underlying instance charge, but also risks permanent data loss.
Which provider is easiest for a beginner?
DigitalOcean Droplets are usually the simplest starting point because the deployment flow and documentation are straightforward. Lightsail is similarly approachable when the project benefits from bundled AWS services.
The Bottom Line
For a historically grounded 2021-style shortlist, Antihost VPS is listed first here for a current self-managed Linux VPS with full root access, DigitalOcean is the clearest beginner option, Lightsail is the practical AWS-adjacent option, and Akamai Cloud Computing preserves the traditional Linode developer experience. Choose by memory, CPU behavior, transfer, region, backup needs, and your willingness to manage the server—not by an old universal ranking.
