How to restore Warcraft III Reforged graphics, saves, and custom maps after an update

If a Warcraft III: Reforged update switched you to Classic-looking graphics, hid your maps, or made an older save refuse to load, start with one rule: close the game and copy the entire Warcraft III user-data folder before changing anything. Then verify the graphics selection, restore maps to the correct platform folder, and diagnose save errors as possible map-version mismatches. A campaign-specific recovery procedure exists for some saves broken by patch 3.0.1, but it is temporary, version-specific, and should not be applied to unrelated maps.

Start with a complete backup

Do not begin by reinstalling the client, deleting the user folder, or replacing map files. Exit Warcraft III completely, including any Battle.net process that is still writing game data, and make a dated copy of the entire Warcraft III user-data folder to another drive or a separate folder. The copy must include both your saved games and the Maps directory. A USB flash drive is adequate if you do not have another internal or external drive.

Keeping the whole folder is safer than copying only one save. Custom maps may use subfolders, campaign files, or supporting data, and a save can depend on the exact map file that was present when it was created. Keep the untouched copy even if the game appears fixed; it is your rollback point if a later test replaces a file.

What to record before changing files

  • The Warcraft III client version shown in the launcher or game menu.
  • Your operating system and whether the problem affects a campaign mission, a custom map, or both.
  • The exact wording of any load error, especially an error saying that the map referenced by the save is different from the map on the hard drive.
  • The name and location of each map or campaign you intend to restore.

This record prevents a generic fix from being applied to a problem that actually requires an older map version.

Restore the Reforged graphics selection

Open the current Warcraft III graphics or options screen and check that the Reforged or remastered presentation is selected instead of Classic. Blizzard has changed menu labels and layouts between builds, so use the label displayed by your current client rather than relying on an old click-by-click guide. If the setting has reverted, select the Reforged option, apply it, and restart the game if the client requests a restart.

Test both kinds of content

  1. Launch one campaign mission and confirm that models, textures, terrain, and effects use the intended Reforged presentation.
  2. Open one custom map and check the same elements.
  3. Exit and relaunch once more if the first test looked correct only until you returned to the menu.

A reinstall by itself does not prove that the graphics choice is restored. Blizzard’s patch 1.35.0 notes include fixes for models and textures failing to load correctly when switching between custom maps. Patch 1.32.2 also lists a crash related to the Low texture setting. If the game still looks wrong or crashes, note whether the problem appears only on Low textures, only after changing maps, or in every mode; that distinction is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling.

If the menu does not match older instructions

Do not invent a setting path that is absent from your build. Record the exact label you see, confirm whether the game is using Classic or Reforged assets, and test a campaign mission and a custom map separately. If only one type of content is affected, continue with the map and save checks below instead of assuming the graphics files themselves are missing.

Restore custom maps to the correct folder

Warcraft III stores downloaded and user-created maps in a user-data location, not necessarily in the installation directory. Use the documented default for your platform:

Platform Default Maps folder
Windows C:Users<YourUserName>DocumentsWarcraft IIIMaps
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Blizzard/Warcraft III/Maps/

Windows procedure

  1. Close Warcraft III.
  2. Open File Explorer and go to Documents\Warcraft III under your Windows user account.
  3. Open or create the Maps folder.
  4. Copy your backed-up .w3x and .w3m files into it.
  5. Recreate any subfolders used by the map author; do not flatten a folder tree if the map was supplied with one.
  6. Start Warcraft III and open the Custom Games or map-selection screen.

macOS procedure

  1. Quit Warcraft III.
  2. In Finder, choose Go and open Go to Folder.
  3. Enter ~/Library/Application Support/Blizzard/Warcraft III/Maps/.
  4. Copy the backed-up .w3x and .w3m files and their required subfolders into that location.
  5. Relaunch the game and check the Custom Games or map-selection screen.

If the Maps folder is absent, create it with that exact spelling and capitalization. Do not place files in a similarly named installation folder unless the current client explicitly uses that location.

Confirm that the restore worked

Restart the client after copying files; the map list is not guaranteed to refresh while the game is running. Open one restored map far enough to verify that it loads. Visibility in the list proves only that the file was found. It does not prove that an older saved game can use that file.

Why an old save can stop loading after an update

A saved game records the map it was created on. If an update replaces, patches, or otherwise changes that map, the file now on disk may no longer match the map version recorded by the save. Blizzard’s 1.32.2 notes show the relevant error text: “The map file referenced by the saved game is different from the map file on your hard drive”. This is a map-version problem, not evidence that the save folder is necessarily missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the error to choose the next action

Observed symptom Most likely scope Safe next action
Custom map is absent from the map list Wrong folder, missing file, or missing subfolder Close the game, restore the map to the platform-specific Maps folder, restart, and test the map.
Map is visible and opens, but an old save reports a different map file Save and map versions do not match Keep the backup and locate the exact map version used by the save; do not overwrite the only save.
Campaign save fails after a client update Campaign map changed or the save is not compatible with the current build Test another save or mission, then consider the campaign-specific 3.0.1 workaround only if its symptoms and campaign match.
Graphics are wrong in every mode Graphics selection or asset-loading issue Recheck the current graphics option, restart, and document the build and setting before further file changes.

Do not overwrite the only copy

When testing an alternate map file, work from a duplicate of the save and keep the original outside the active user folder. Replacing a save or deleting a map can remove the evidence needed to identify the mismatch. A map that appears in Custom Games can still be the wrong revision for a particular save.

Loading custom-campaign saves in supported builds

Blizzard’s patch 1.35.0 notes state that the Load saved game menu can reload custom campaign save files. This helps with supported custom-campaign saves, but it is not a promise that every save made before an update remains compatible. The map files, campaign structure, and client build still have to match what the save expects.

If a custom-campaign save is not listed, first verify that its campaign files and maps are in the restored user folders, restart the client, and check the Load saved game menu again. If the save appears but fails with a map-difference message, stop treating the issue as a missing-folder problem and find the matching map revision.

Conditional recovery for a campaign save broken by patch 3.0.1

A Blizzard-hosted technical-support thread describes a temporary recovery flow for certain campaign saves affected by patch 3.0.1. It uses older campaign map files obtained through the workaround, enables a local-file override, lets you continue the existing act, and then runs a removal or restore step so the normal current configuration returns. The procedure is campaign- and symptom-specific; it is not a general rollback for custom maps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When this workaround is appropriate

  • The save belongs to the campaign and act identified by the support thread.
  • The failure began after the relevant 3.0.1 change.
  • You have already made a separate backup of the entire user-data folder and saves.
  • You are prepared to restore the normal configuration immediately after finishing the affected act.

How to handle the temporary override safely

  1. Close Warcraft III and make or verify the backup before downloading or replacing any files.
  2. Follow the support thread’s instructions to obtain the older campaign maps from Blizzard’s CDN. Use the files and scripts supplied there rather than substituting a similarly named map from another source.
  3. Enable the local-file override exactly as described by that procedure.
  4. Launch Warcraft III and load the existing campaign save. Continue the affected act; do not use the override as a reason to replace unrelated maps or saves.
  5. Finish the act as instructed by the support procedure.
  6. Run the thread’s removal or restore step so the normal current configuration is reinstated.
  7. Restart the client and test a normal campaign load and one custom map.

The support thread says its scripts do not modify, delete, move, or overwrite save files. That statement does not remove the need for your own backup: a wrong file, interrupted update, or unrelated map conflict can still leave you without a usable recovery path.

When not to use it

Do not apply this campaign workaround to a custom map, a different campaign, or a save whose failure began for another reason. Mixing older campaign maps into a live installation can create new mismatches. If your map is simply missing, restore the correct Maps folder first. If the save reports a different map file, identify the exact version before attempting any rollback.

Choose the least destructive fix

Approach Data safety Version match Scope Reversibility
Backup, verify graphics, and restore the user Maps folder High, provided the original folder remains untouched Uses the files currently available; may not match an old save Missing maps or incorrect graphics selection High; remove the restored copies or replace the folder with the backup
Find the exact older map used by a save High when tested with a duplicate save Targets the revision recorded by the save Map-version load errors High if files are kept in a separate test folder
3.0.1 campaign-specific local-file override Moderate; backup is mandatory Temporarily uses older campaign maps Only the campaign and act covered by the support procedure Designed to be temporary; run its removal or restore step afterward
Deleting the user folder or reinstalling immediately Low unless a complete backup exists Usually leaves you with current maps, not the revision an old save needs Broad and often unnecessary Low if files were deleted or overwritten

A complete recovery sequence

Use this order when you are unsure which symptom you have:

  1. Close Warcraft III and copy the entire user-data folder, including saves and Maps, to a dated location or another drive.
  2. Record the client version, operating system, affected campaign or map, and exact error text.
  3. Open the current graphics/options screen and select the Reforged or remastered presentation if the client has reverted to Classic.
  4. Test one campaign mission and one custom map, noting whether models, textures, or Low texture mode trigger the issue.
  5. Restore .w3x, .w3m, and required subfolders to the documented Windows or macOS Maps location.
  6. Restart the client and confirm that a restored map appears and can be opened.
  7. If a save still fails, compare the error with the 1.32.2 map-difference wording and look for the exact map revision rather than copying a newer file over the old one.
  8. For a supported custom campaign, try the Load saved game menu noted in patch 1.35.0.
  9. Only if the save is the campaign and symptom covered by the 3.0.1 support procedure, use that temporary local-file override and then restore the normal configuration.
  10. After every test, close the game and preserve the working copy before trying another change.

What updates can and cannot fix

Patch notes provide useful boundaries. Version 1.35.0 documents both custom-campaign save reloading and fixes for models and textures that failed when switching between custom maps. Version 1.32.2 documents the map-file mismatch error and a crash tied to Low texture settings. These changes explain why an update can affect graphics and saves at the same time, but they do not guarantee that a save created against an older map revision will load on a newer file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

File paths, menu labels, and compatibility behavior can change in later Warcraft III builds. After another client update, repeat the backup step, recheck the graphics selection, and verify the current Maps location before assuming an older procedure still applies.

Final verification checklist

  • The original user-data folder is preserved in a separate, dated backup.
  • The intended Reforged graphics option is selected in the current client.
  • A campaign mission and a custom map have both been tested.
  • Maps are in the correct platform-specific user folder, with their original subfolders.
  • The map appears in the map-selection screen after a full client restart.
  • Any save error has been classified as a missing map, a map-version mismatch, or a campaign-specific compatibility issue.
  • No save was deleted or overwritten during testing.
  • The 3.0.1 workaround was used only for the matching campaign symptom and was removed afterward.
