How to Restore a MySQL Database Using phpMyAdmin

Restore a MySQL dump safely in phpMyAdmin: select the destination database, import the SQL file, troubleshoot large uploads, and verify the result.

To restore a MySQL database in phpMyAdmin, select the destination database, open Import (called SQL in some older installations), choose the dump file, and click Go. A dump may contain the database structure, its data, or both. After the import, check the tables, row counts, views, triggers, and application connection. If a browser upload is too large or times out, use the server-side $cfg['UploadDir'] method or the MySQL command-line client instead.

What a MySQL restore in phpMyAdmin actually does

A restore replays SQL statements from a dump file against a selected MySQL database. Those statements can create tables and other objects, insert rows, and apply database-level changes. The dump is therefore the restore artifact: it may contain structure, data, or both, depending on how it was exported.

phpMyAdmin’s project documentation describes SQL as useful for restoring backed-up data. The process is not a file copy in the way restoring a folder is; phpMyAdmin submits the statements to MySQL, which executes them in sequence. A successful upload therefore does not by itself prove that every statement completed or that the application is usable. Verification after the import is part of the restore.

Prepare before importing

Do the checks below before opening phpMyAdmin. They prevent the most common mistake: importing a valid dump into the wrong place or discovering a compatibility problem only after a production database has been altered.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • Identify the dump: confirm that you have the intended .sql file, or a supported compressed form such as .sql.gz or .sql.bz2 where compression support is enabled.
  • Know what it contains: determine whether the export includes schema, data, or both. A data-only dump cannot create missing tables; a schema-only dump will not restore rows.
  • Confirm the destination: note the exact database name and make sure your MySQL account can create or modify the objects the dump contains.
  • Check server generations: record the MySQL version that produced the dump and the version receiving it. The phpMyAdmin documentation specifically warns about imports from versions before 5.7.6 into MySQL 5.7.7 and later.
  • Protect existing data: if the destination contains anything you may need, export it first or use a separate, empty database for the test restore.
  • Plan a verification: decide which tables, approximate row counts, views, triggers, and application functions you will check after the import.

Method 1: Restore through the phpMyAdmin browser interface

1. Sign in and select the destination database

  1. Open phpMyAdmin and sign in with an account that has access to the destination database.
  2. In the navigation panel, click the database that should receive the dump. Do not open Import before selecting it: the selected database determines where phpMyAdmin sends the SQL statements.

If the database does not exist, create it first when your hosting control panel or MySQL privileges allow that operation. If the dump itself contains a CREATE DATABASE statement, inspect it before running it; selecting a destination database still helps you verify that you are working in the intended server context.

2. Open Import

With the destination database open, choose the Import tab. Older phpMyAdmin installations may label the equivalent page SQL. The labels vary by release, but the purpose is the same: submit a saved SQL dump to MySQL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Choose the dump file

Use the file selector to choose the dump from your computer. Form-based import supports SQL files and, when the installation has compression support enabled, compressed files including .sql.gz and .sql.bz2. Keep the original archive until the restore has been verified.

Some phpMyAdmin installations also allow you to drag a file into the browser. Drag-and-drop is only an alternate way to select the file; it does not remove PHP upload-size or execution limits.

4. Submit the import

Review the selected database and filename, then click Go. phpMyAdmin passes the dump to MySQL and displays a result message. For a small dump, the page may return quickly. A large dump may take long enough for a request timeout, or may be rejected before MySQL receives it.

5. Read the result instead of assuming success

Look for an explicit success message and any warnings or SQL errors. Do not close the page as soon as the upload finishes. An upload can complete while one or more statements fail, leaving a partially restored database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the restored database

Use phpMyAdmin’s database view and, where necessary, your application to verify the result. There is no single universal checklist that proves every restore, so match the checks to what the dump was supposed to contain.

  • Tables: confirm that expected tables exist and that their names and columns look correct.
  • Rows: compare row counts for critical tables with the source or with a known baseline. A table that exists but is empty is not a complete data restore.
  • Views: open expected views and test a representative query. View definitions can expose version or privilege problems even when base tables imported correctly.
  • Triggers: verify that required triggers are present and attached to the correct tables.
  • Application connection: load the application, sign in, and exercise a read path and a write path appropriate to the system. Confirm that its configured database name, host, username, and password point to this restored server.
  • Logs and errors: retain the phpMyAdmin result and any MySQL error text. It is useful when diagnosing a partial import or repeating the procedure.

For a production recovery, keep the original dump and the pre-restore backup until these checks pass and the application has operated normally for an appropriate observation period.

Why a large SQL dump will not upload

Browser imports are constrained by PHP settings as well as by phpMyAdmin and MySQL. The phpMyAdmin FAQ identifies four settings that commonly limit submitted dumps:

PHP setting What it limits What to check
upload_max_filesize The maximum size of an uploaded file The dump must not exceed this value.
post_max_size The maximum size of the complete HTTP POST request It must be larger than upload_max_filesize, because the request also carries form data.
memory_limit PHP memory available while processing the request A file can be below the upload limit and still fail during processing if PHP runs out of memory.
max_execution_time How long PHP may execute the request A lengthy import can exceed this time even after the file has uploaded.

The exact values depend on your host and PHP installation. If you administer the server, change the settings in the configuration used by the web server and PHP, then restart or reload services as required by that environment. On managed hosting, ask the provider which limits apply; editing a local file may have no effect if the host controls PHP centrally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recognize the failure stage

  • Rejected immediately with a size message: the file is probably over upload_max_filesize or the request is over post_max_size.
  • Upload appears to finish but the page times out: processing likely exceeded max_execution_time, or the server ran out of memory.
  • Some tables exist and others do not: the request may have stopped partway through the dump. Treat this as a partial restore, read the SQL error, and decide whether to clear the destination and restart from a known state.
  • The browser connection drops: do not assume that MySQL continued safely. Check the database before retrying; rerunning a non-idempotent dump can create duplicate rows or “already exists” errors.

Use UploadDir when the browser cannot handle the file

phpMyAdmin can be configured with a server-side upload directory, written as $cfg['UploadDir'] in its configuration. Instead of sending a large dump from your workstation through the browser, an administrator places the file in that directory on the phpMyAdmin server. The file then appears for selection on the Import page.

  1. Ask the server administrator for the configured $cfg['UploadDir'] location and its ownership and permission requirements.
  2. Transfer the dump to that directory using the server’s approved file-transfer method.
  3. In phpMyAdmin, select the destination database and open Import.
  4. Choose the server-side file shown by phpMyAdmin and click Go.
  5. Afterward, remove the dump from the upload directory if it is no longer needed, following your organization’s retention policy.

UploadDir avoids the workstation-to-browser upload step, but it does not magically eliminate every execution or memory limit. It is most useful when you have server access and the file is already on, or can be transferred directly to, the same host as phpMyAdmin.

Use the MySQL command line for repeatable or very large restores

When shell access is available, the MySQL client is usually the more practical path for a large dump or a recovery that must be logged and repeated. A typical import command is:

mysql -u USER -p DATABASE < dump.sql

Replace USER, DATABASE, and dump.sql with the account, destination database, and actual file path. The client prompts for the password rather than placing it in the command. Run it on a host that can reach the MySQL server, and use the account permitted to create and modify the objects in the dump.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The command-line method avoids the browser’s PHP upload request, making it suitable when the dump is too large for the form or when a web request repeatedly times out. It also fits scripted recovery, where you can preserve terminal output and rerun the same documented command. It still depends on MySQL permissions, server resources, and SQL compatibility; changing interfaces does not repair an incompatible dump.

Choose the right restore method

Method Best fit Access required Main constraint Repeatability and logging
Browser Import Small or moderate dumps and one-off restores phpMyAdmin login and database privileges PHP upload, memory, and execution settings Simple for occasional use; the result page is the primary record.
Server-side UploadDir Files that are already on the server or can be transferred directly phpMyAdmin plus permission to place files in $cfg['UploadDir'] Still subject to processing and server limits More convenient for large files; file placement and cleanup must be managed.
MySQL command line Very large, automated, or repeatedly tested restores Shell access, network access to MySQL, and database privileges Requires command-line familiarity and correct credentials Strongest option for captured output, scripts, and repeatable procedures.

There are no universal timing or failure-rate figures that make one method best for every server. Choose based on dump size, available access, timeout risk, and whether you need a repeatable recovery record.

MySQL-version compatibility

A dump is SQL written for the server that produced it, not a guarantee of portability across every MySQL release. phpMyAdmin documentation calls out problems when importing dumps from versions before 5.7.6 into MySQL 5.7.7 and later. Other differences can also surface as syntax errors, unsupported features, changed defaults, or object-definition conflicts.

  1. Record the source and destination MySQL versions before starting.
  2. Open a copy of the dump in a text editor and look for version-specific comments, statements, or features that the destination may not understand.
  3. Test the restore in a separate database or staging server when the versions differ materially.
  4. Read the first SQL error carefully. Fixing the first incompatibility often reveals whether later errors are merely consequences of the initial failure.
  5. Do not overwrite a working production database with an untested cross-version import.

Compressed SQL files do not remove compatibility requirements; compression changes how the file is transported, not the SQL that MySQL executes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common errors and the safest response

“No database selected” or the wrong destination

Return to the database list, select the intended destination, and reopen Import. If the dump contains database-qualified table names, inspect them before retrying so that statements cannot silently target another database.

“Table already exists”

The destination may contain an earlier partial restore or live data. Stop and decide whether the dump is intended to merge, replace, or create a fresh copy. For a clean replacement, make a verified backup first and use an empty database or an approved schema-reset procedure rather than deleting objects impulsively.

Permission or access errors

The MySQL account may lack permission to create tables, views, triggers, or insert data. Ask the database administrator to grant only the privileges required for this restore, or use an account authorized for the documented recovery procedure. phpMyAdmin cannot grant permissions that the underlying MySQL account does not have.

Syntax or collation errors

Capture the exact failing statement and MySQL error. Compare source and destination versions and inspect the dump around that statement. Do not delete random lines from a production backup; make a copy, test any edit on a disposable database, and preserve the original file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Import stops partway through

Consider the database tainted until you know which statements ran. Record the last successful object, review the error, and either repair deliberately or drop the test database and restart from the original dump. Retrying over a partial data load can duplicate rows when the dump uses ordinary INSERT statements.

Operational safeguards for a production restore

  • Schedule a maintenance window if writes could occur during the restore.
  • Make a separate backup of the current destination before changing it.
  • Use a staging restore first when the dump is large, the versions differ, or the database is business-critical.
  • Keep credentials out of filenames, screenshots, shell history where possible, and shared logs.
  • Restrict access to the dump: SQL exports can contain personal information, password hashes, tokens, and other sensitive data.
  • Document the source version, destination version, database name, method used, timestamp, result, and verification checks.
  • Keep the original dump unchanged so a failed experiment can be repeated from a known artifact.

A concise restore checklist

  1. Confirm the dump contains the structure, data, or both that you require.
  2. Back up any existing destination data.
  3. Check source and destination MySQL versions, especially around the pre-5.7.6 to 5.7.7 transition noted in phpMyAdmin documentation.
  4. Select the destination database in phpMyAdmin.
  5. Open Import (or SQL on an older installation).
  6. Select the .sql, .sql.gz, or .sql.bz2 file when supported, then click Go.
  7. If the browser fails, use configured $cfg['UploadDir'] or the MySQL client.
  8. Read the result and save any error text.
  9. Verify tables, row counts, views, triggers, and application connectivity.
  10. Retain the source dump and pre-restore backup until the recovery is accepted.
