The most practical Linux VPS deployment depends on how much control you need: use Coreflux Hub for a guided native installation, the official Docker image for repeatable deployments, or a DigitalOcean 1-Click App for the fastest managed setup. Whichever route you choose, restrict the required MQTT ports, replace the initial root/coreflux password immediately, enable authentication and TLS, and verify the broker with Mosquitto clients before putting devices into production.

Choose the deployment method before creating the VPS
Coreflux supports self-hosted Linux installations, Docker, Raspberry Pi deployments and cloud environments. On a VPS, the meaningful choice is between three paths: Coreflux Hub, the official Docker image, and a DigitalOcean 1-Click App. All can provide a working broker, but they differ in version control, repeatability, certificate handling, persistence and day-to-day administration.

|---|---|---|---|
| Coreflux Hub | Downloads a Linux broker under /home/<Username>/.config/corefluxhub/<BrokerID>/CorefluxCentral and creates a system service named CorefluxHub_<BrokerIdentification>.service. |
A straightforward native installation when you want broker files and a system service without building the service yourself. | You manage the VPS firewall, credentials, TLS, backups, upgrades and service operations. |
| Official Docker image | Runs coreflux/coreflux-mqtt-broker; Docker Hub lists latest, version tags such as 2.14.3, and distroless Linux variants for architectures including amd64 and arm64. |
Repeatable deployments, infrastructure-as-code workflows, or teams that already operate Docker Compose. | You manage image pinning, mounted data, Compose configuration, firewall exposure, certificates and backups. |
| DigitalOcean 1-Click App | Creates a Droplet with the broker already running and documents SSH access, listener ports, TLS certificate locations, a systemd restart command and Mosquitto validation commands. | The shortest path to a working broker on a supported cloud template. | You still manage access control, certificate installation or renewal, firewall rules, data protection and upgrades. |
Record the exact choice before deployment. For Hub, save the broker ID and service name. For Docker, save the image tag and Compose file. For a 1-Click App, record the template version and Droplet details. This information is essential when you later need to reproduce the installation or roll it back.
Prepare the Linux VPS and network boundary
Size and access
Create a Linux VPS with a public IP address, SSH access for an administrative account, and a firewall you can control both at the operating-system and cloud-provider levels. The published Coreflux figures state that a broker can use as little as 256 MB of RAM while managing 2,500 connections, but that is a vendor claim rather than an independent capacity test. Select more memory when your clients, retained messages, subscriptions, logging or other VPS services require it.

Open only the listeners your clients need
Coreflux’s Docker and DigitalOcean examples use these listeners:
| Port | Protocol or purpose | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1883 | MQTT over TCP | Unencrypted MQTT for controlled networks or initial connectivity tests. |
| 1884 | MQTT over TLS in the cited Docker and 1-Click examples | Encrypted MQTT connections when that template assigns TLS to 1884. |
| 5000 | WebSocket | MQTT clients that connect through a WebSocket endpoint. |
| 443 | Secure WebSocket | WebSocket MQTT over TLS, where enabled by the selected template. |
| 8883 | MQTT over TLS on Coreflux’s public broker page | A TLS MQTT listener in configurations that use the conventional 8883 assignment. |
Do not assume that every installation maps TLS to the same port. The documented Docker and DigitalOcean examples use 1884 for MQTT TLS, while Coreflux’s public broker page lists 8883. Inspect the listener configuration supplied with your Hub broker, image tag or 1-Click template, then mirror those exact ports in both the cloud firewall and the VPS firewall.
For a test that does not require WebSockets, expose only the MQTT port you actually configured. Add 5000 or 443 only when an application needs WebSocket access. Restrict administrative interfaces to trusted source addresses whenever the deployment exposes one.
Deploy with Coreflux Hub
Coreflux Hub is the native Linux route. The Hub downloads the broker into the invoking user’s configuration directory and creates a service for it.

- Install and run Coreflux Hub using the Linux package or procedure supplied for your Coreflux release.
- Create or select a broker in Hub and note its broker ID and identification name.
- Confirm that the executable is present at
/home/<Username>/.config/corefluxhub/<BrokerID>/CorefluxCentral. - Find the generated service name, which follows the pattern
CorefluxHub_<BrokerIdentification>.service. - Use the service manager to check that the broker is running and to inspect its logs if startup fails. The exact unit name is the one Hub generated, not a universal unit name.
- Sign in with the documented initial credentials, username
rootand passwordcoreflux, then change the password before allowing untrusted clients to connect.
Keep the Hub-managed directory and the generated unit under your deployment inventory. Moving the executable or deleting the configuration directory without updating the service can leave a unit that points to a nonexistent broker.
Deploy with the official Docker image
Pin a version instead of relying on latest
The official image is coreflux/coreflux-mqtt-broker. Docker Hub provides the floating latest tag, versioned tags such as 2.14.3, and distroless variants for Linux architectures including amd64 and arm64. Use a tested version tag in production so that a routine image pull does not silently change broker behavior.
Start the broker with Compose
Coreflux’s Docker quick-start maps ports 1883, 1884, 5000 and 443 and starts the stack with docker-compose up -d. A deployment should preserve the same port intent while adapting the image tag and persistence settings to your environment.
- Install Docker Engine and the Compose implementation supported by your Linux distribution.
- Create a dedicated directory for the broker’s Compose file and any configuration or certificate mounts.
- Set the image to a tested Coreflux version, for example
coreflux/coreflux-mqtt-broker:2.14.3, rather than leaving an unreviewed production deployment onlatest. - Map only the listeners required by your clients. The quick-start maps
1883:1883,1884:1884,5000:5000and443:443; remove unused mappings. - Configure the documented data or configuration mounts for your chosen release. Do not treat a container’s writable layer as a backup or as durable broker storage.
- Place TLS certificates in the paths expected by the image or mounted configuration, and protect private-key permissions.
- Start the service with
docker-compose up -d(or the equivalentdocker compose up -dcommand supported by your installation). - Check container status and logs, then perform the publish/subscribe test described below.
The available material does not define one universal persistence model or backup procedure for every Coreflux image version. Confirm the persistence configuration for the exact tag you deploy, test a restore, and document how you will stop the container, preserve data and return to the prior image tag.
Deploy with the DigitalOcean 1-Click App
The DigitalOcean option is the fastest route when you want the provider’s template to perform the initial installation. After the Droplet is created, the broker is already running and the documentation provides SSH access details, endpoint ports, TLS certificate locations, a systemd restart command and Mosquitto validation commands.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Create the Coreflux Droplet from the 1-Click App and record its public IP address.
- Connect over SSH using the administrative access supplied during Droplet creation.
- Review the endpoint and listener settings supplied by the template before changing cloud-firewall rules.
- For TLS, place the certificate and private key at
/opt/coreflux/tls/server.crtand/opt/coreflux/tls/server.key, following the template’s ownership and permission requirements. - Restart the broker with
sudo systemctl restart coreflux-broker. - Validate the unencrypted listener first if it is enabled, then repeat the test against the TLS listener with certificate verification.
The 1-Click image is convenient, but it does not remove operational responsibility. Keep a copy of the template’s configuration, confirm where broker data is stored, and establish a backup and upgrade plan before onboarding devices.
Change credentials and enable authentication
Both the Hub documentation and the initial broker experience use root / coreflux as the starting credentials. Treat those values as publicly known. Change the password on the first administrative login, create least-privilege client accounts where the selected Coreflux version supports them, and avoid embedding an administrator credential in every device.
Coreflux’s MQTT Bridge configuration exposes username and password fields along with EnableTLS and EnableAuthentication controls. Set authentication to enabled before exposing a listener to the Internet. If a client cannot connect after the change, verify its username, password, selected listener and protocol rather than disabling authentication as a permanent workaround.
- Use a unique, long password for the administrative account.
- Store credentials in a secrets manager or protected deployment file, not in a public Compose repository.
- Use separate credentials for applications, bridges and operators where possible.
- Rotate the initial password and any temporary credentials before production traffic begins.
Enable TLS correctly
TLS protects MQTT credentials and message contents while they cross the network, but it must be configured consistently on the broker, firewall and client. First determine whether your deployment assigns TLS to port 1884 or 8883; the cited examples are not identical.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Obtain a certificate whose name matches the DNS name clients will use. Keep the private key readable only by the broker process or its protected container mount.
- Install the certificate and key using the paths required by the selected deployment. The DigitalOcean template documents
/opt/coreflux/tls/server.crtand/opt/coreflux/tls/server.key. - Turn on
EnableTLSand keepEnableAuthenticationenabled in the relevant MQTT or bridge configuration. - Open the configured TLS port in both firewalls and close any plaintext listener that clients no longer need.
- Restart the service or container. For the DigitalOcean template, use
sudo systemctl restart coreflux-broker. - Connect with a client that validates the certificate chain and hostname. Do not normalize a certificate error by disabling verification in production.
Certificate renewal procedures vary by deployment. The available documentation does not establish one universal renewal or rollback runbook for every Linux VPS installation, so test renewal and restart behavior with the exact Coreflux version and template you operate.

Test reachability with Mosquitto clients
Install the Mosquitto command-line clients on an administration workstation or on the VPS:
sudo apt install -y mosquitto-clients
Use a private test topic and substitute the VPS address:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →mosquitto_sub -h YOUR_VPS_IP -p 1883 -t "coreflux/test"
mosquitto_pub -h YOUR_VPS_IP -p 1883 -t "coreflux/test" -m "Hello from Coreflux"
Run the subscriber in one terminal and the publisher in a second terminal so the subscription is active before the message is sent. Seeing Hello from Coreflux confirms basic TCP reachability, broker acceptance, topic routing and subscription delivery. The documented DigitalOcean command pattern places mosquitto_pub before mosquitto_sub; using two terminals with the subscriber first avoids missing a non-retained test message.
Repeat the test over TLS
Replace the port with the TLS listener assigned by your template and provide the certificate authority or verification options required by that certificate. A typical command shape is:
mosquitto_sub -h YOUR_BROKER_DNS_NAME -p YOUR_TLS_PORT -t "coreflux/test" --cafile /path/to/ca.crt
mosquitto_pub -h YOUR_BROKER_DNS_NAME -p YOUR_TLS_PORT -t "coreflux/test" -m "Hello over TLS" --cafile /path/to/ca.crt
Use the exact client options required by your certificate chain and Coreflux configuration. A successful encrypted test should verify the hostname, certificate chain, authentication credentials and message delivery, not merely establish a TCP socket.
Best Value
Troubleshoot failures in the order they occur
No TCP connection
- Confirm the VPS has the expected public IP and that DNS resolves to it.
- Check both the cloud firewall and the Linux firewall for the configured listener port.
- Verify that the Coreflux service or container is running and listening on the expected interface.
- Confirm that you opened 1884 or 8883 according to the actual TLS configuration rather than assuming one is universal.
Connection reaches the broker but authentication fails
- Verify that the initial
root/corefluxpassword was changed and that the client uses the new value. - Check the username and password fields in the client or bridge configuration.
- Ensure the client is using the correct listener and that authentication is enabled for that listener.
TLS handshake or certificate errors
- Use the DNS name present in the certificate, not an unrelated IP address.
- Check that the certificate and key paths match the deployment’s configuration and that the broker can read them.
- Verify the certificate chain supplied to Mosquitto and inspect the broker logs after a restart.
- Confirm that the client is pointed at the TLS port selected by the template.
Messages do not arrive
- Subscribe before publishing and use exactly the same topic string, including capitalization.
- Check that both commands target the same host and port.
- Review broker logs for authorization or topic-routing errors.
Operate the VPS after the first successful test
Document the broker version, deployment method, service or container name, listener map, certificate paths, credentials owner and backup location. Monitor disk, memory, connection counts and broker logs. Keep production data outside ephemeral container storage and verify that your backup includes the broker configuration and any persistent message data your workload requires.
Upgrade deliberately: test a new Coreflux version in a staging VPS, retain the previous image tag or package, back up the configuration and data, and define a rollback procedure before changing production. The available Coreflux material does not specify one universal support policy, persistence model, backup process or upgrade runbook for every Linux VPS installation, so these details must be confirmed against the exact version and deployment template you select.
Capacity claims and what they mean
Coreflux’s current product material claims more than 35,000 clients on a single broker, over 800,000 messages per second, and as little as 256 MB of RAM while managing 2,500 connections. These are vendor-published figures; the cited material does not provide an independent benchmark methodology, workload definition or hardware profile. Treat them as sizing references rather than guarantees. Measure your own connection count, message rate, payload size, retained data and TLS overhead before committing a production architecture.
Security warning about public brokers
Do not use a public test broker for sensitive data. Coreflux warns that messages on its public broker are visible to all connected clients. A private VPS with authentication, TLS, restricted firewall rules and a controlled client list is the appropriate boundary for operational or personal data.
