For most people, the OnePlus 15 is the better one-phone compromise; the ASUS ROG Phone 9 is the better specialist tool for long competitive sessions. OnePlus offers a 165Hz display, native 165fps support and a gaming software stack. ASUS adds physical AirTrigger controls, a gaming-focused cooling system and a documented 185Hz Game Genie mode. Neither manufacturer has published an independent, head-to-head end-to-end latency test proving that one is faster. Touch-sampling figures alone cannot settle the question.
The short answer
Choose the OnePlus 15 when you want a normal flagship-style phone that can also deliver high-frame-rate gaming. Choose the ROG Phone 9 when gaming controls, sustained cooling and accessory support matter more than having the most conventional everyday handset.

- Best balanced choice: OnePlus 15 Series, based on the features announced by OnePlus on November 10, 2025.
- Best gaming-first choice: ASUS ROG Phone 9, because it combines AirTrigger controls, GameCool 9 cooling, Game Genie tuning and optional gaming accessories.
- Latency verdict: No reliable public evidence in the cited material establishes a universal winner. Network delay, game-engine scheduling, frame submission, display timing and touch processing all contribute to what you feel as lag.
OnePlus reports a 165Hz panel with native 165fps support, 330Hz touch sampling and 3200Hz instantaneous sampling in its new gaming architecture. ASUS lists up to 185Hz while playing mobile games through Game Genie and 720Hz touch sampling on the ROG Phone 9. These are different vendor metrics measured under different conditions, so comparing the headline numbers as if they were one standardized test would be misleading.

Input latency is the time between your finger movement and the game showing the resulting action. Touch sampling is only one link in that chain. A useful model is:

- Touch capture: the digitizer detects a finger position and pressure change.
- Input delivery: the operating system and game receive that event.
- Game processing: the game simulation handles the event and prepares a new frame.
- Frame submission: the rendered frame is queued for display.
- Display scan-out: the panel refreshes and the changed pixels become visible.
- Online response: multiplayer games add network travel time and server processing before other players’ actions appear.
Qualcomm gaming engineer Dave Durnil summarized the limitation clearly: “Touch latency depends on many factors like the timing of a game’s display vsync and its frame submission.” His statement appears in a historical Snapdragon 888 article, not as a comparison of these two phones. You can read it in the Qualcomm gaming latency discussion.
A higher refresh rate can reduce the time between display updates, and faster touch scanning can give the system more opportunities to detect movement. Neither guarantees that a particular game processes input faster, renders at the advertised frame rate or presents the result on the next refresh.

165Hz output and 165fps support
OnePlus says the OnePlus 15 Series can drive a 165Hz display with native 165fps support. That gives a compatible game the opportunity to present a new frame about every 6.06 milliseconds, provided the game, graphics settings and thermal state can sustain it. The announcement does not establish that every title supports 165fps, and OnePlus describes game support as something it intends to expand.
Touch-response hardware
The announced stack includes a dedicated touch-response chip, 330Hz touch sampling and 3200Hz instantaneous sampling. Treat these as OnePlus’s own specifications. The cited release does not define instantaneous sampling in a way that can be fairly compared with ASUS’s 720Hz figure, nor does it publish a side-by-side latency test against the ROG Phone 9.

OP Gaming Core and OP FPS Max
OnePlus positions OP Gaming Core and OP FPS Max as software layers for frame-rate stability and gaming efficiency. The same announcement reports up to a 22.74% reduction in CPU instructions for key tasks and an 80% improvement in per-frame rendering efficiency. Both are company-reported internal figures; the source does not provide the test device, workload, baseline or independent verification needed to rank the OnePlus against another phone.
Everyday-phone fit
The OnePlus 15 is presented as part of a flagship series rather than a gaming-only device. That makes it the safer choice if you need one handset for messaging, photography, work and games. The cited material does not provide a current direct comparison of cameras, update duration, carrier compatibility or regional pricing against ASUS, so those decisions require checking the exact model sold in your market.

What the ROG Phone 9 brings to gaming
Game Genie and the 185Hz mode
ASUS lists a refresh rate of up to 185Hz through Game Genie while playing mobile games. The qualification matters: this is not a blanket 185Hz setting for every app. A compatible game must be running through the documented gaming mode, and the software, resolution and power state can affect the result.
AirTrigger controls
AirTrigger gives the ROG Phone 9 built-in touch-sensitive shoulder controls. Mapping a trigger to aim, fire, jump or another action can let you keep thumbs on the display’s movement and camera controls. This is a functional advantage that refresh and touch-sampling numbers cannot replicate. It is most valuable in games designed around multiple simultaneous inputs; it may add little in turn-based games or titles with simple controls.
GameCool 9 and external cooling
ASUS documents the GameCool 9 thermal design for the ROG Phone 9. ASUS says its graphite-sheet volume increased by 57% and cooling performance improved by 12% versus its stated prior design. Those are ASUS lab results, and actual performance depends on ambient temperature, case use, game load and other conditions.

The AeroActive Cooler X Pro is optional for standard ROG Phone 9 and 9 Pro models and included only with the Phone 9 Edition, according to ASUS. ASUS says the cooler can provide up to 29% more effective cooling than the earlier AeroActive Cooler X and adds two physical buttons. Package contents and availability vary by edition and region. The ROG Tessen mobile controller is another optional accessory; check device fit and case clearance before buying.
Sustained performance rather than peak numbers
A gaming phone’s strongest argument is often consistency after 20 or 40 minutes, not the first minute of a benchmark. Lower temperatures can help a device avoid thermal frequency reductions, but the cited ASUS and OnePlus sources do not provide an independent, matched long-session test. If your priority is tournament-length play, the ROG’s named cooling hardware and accessory ecosystem give you more ways to manage heat, while OnePlus’s source supports only the company’s stability and thermal-management claims.
Why touch-sampling numbers cannot decide the winner
OnePlus’s 3200Hz instantaneous-sampling figure and ASUS’s 720Hz touch-sampling figure may describe different sampling windows, modes or reporting methods. A phone can sample touch frequently yet still wait for the next display-vsync interval, a busy game thread or a queued frame. Conversely, efficient scheduling and a stable frame pipeline can make a lower headline number feel responsive.
Qualcomm’s older Snapdragon 888 material reported that Game Quick Touch could reduce touch latency by up to 20% in Qualcomm lab testing. That is historical platform-level context, not a current OnePlus-versus-ROG result. It should not be added to either phone’s specifications or used to infer a present-day ranking.
How to configure either phone for the lowest practical latency
Before launching a game
- Install the latest system and game updates available for your exact regional model.
- Remove thick cases or magnetic accessories that interfere with touch edges, cooling or shoulder controls.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi connection or a strong 5G signal; a fast screen cannot compensate for network jitter.
- Close downloads, cloud backups and overlays that compete for CPU, GPU or network time.
- Charge before a long session, but avoid trapping a charging phone under bedding or other insulation.
OnePlus settings
Use the phone’s gaming panel to enable the available performance and touch-response options, then select the highest frame-rate mode that the game actually supports. OnePlus’s Android 13 system guide describes gaming performance modes and touch-sensitivity controls, but it is an older guide and warns that some Games features vary by country or area. Do not assume its menu names or behavior are identical on the OnePlus 15 or every OxygenOS build. The guide is available as a OnePlus support PDF.

ROG Phone 9 settings
Open Game Genie from the game, enable the desired refresh mode and configure AirTrigger mappings. Start with a frame-rate target the game can hold continuously rather than selecting a peak mode that causes heat and throttling. If using the AeroActive Cooler X Pro, mount it securely, keep its intake unobstructed and verify that the extra buttons are mapped in the game profile.
Network and server checks
For online games, test latency to the game’s server region rather than relying on a generic speed-test result. Ethernet through a compatible adapter or a clean 5GHz/6GHz Wi-Fi channel can reduce local variation, but neither phone can eliminate a distant server, congestion or packet loss.
Which phone fits each type of player?
| Your priority | More suitable choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One phone for work, media and occasional competitive play | OnePlus 15 | Flagship positioning with a dedicated gaming architecture, without relying on an external controller or cooler. |
| Built-in shoulder controls for shooters | ROG Phone 9 | AirTrigger provides physical-location input that the cited OnePlus material does not match. |
| Long sessions in demanding 3D games | ROG Phone 9, conditionally | GameCool 9 and an optional cooler offer more explicitly gaming-focused thermal hardware; no independent test proves a universal advantage. |
| Highest advertised refresh figure | ROG Phone 9 on paper | ASUS lists up to 185Hz in Game Genie, while OnePlus announces 165Hz. The mode and game must support the setting. |
| Using a game that supports OnePlus-specific optimization | OnePlus 15 | OP Gaming Core and OP FPS Max may help where the title is supported; verify support on your software build. |
| Physical controller or cooler ecosystem | ROG Phone 9 | ASUS documents the AeroActive Cooler X Pro and ROG Tessen; costs and package contents vary. |
Common buying and setup mistakes
Assuming every game reaches the maximum refresh rate
Advertised panel capability is not the same as a game’s frame-rate setting. Check the title’s own graphics menu and watch for a stable frame-rate readout. A 165Hz or 185Hz display cannot create frames that the game engine does not render.
Treating 3200Hz and 720Hz as a race
The figures use different definitions and conditions. Without matching test equipment and a common workload, declaring one lower-latency winner from those numbers is not technically sound.
Ignoring heat and accessories
An AeroActive Cooler X Pro is not included with every ROG Phone 9 package. Conversely, the OnePlus announcement does not establish a comparable physical trigger accessory. Price the phone, cooler, controller, case and charger together for your region.

Applying an old software guide to a new model
The OnePlus Android 13 guide is useful for understanding the kinds of gaming controls the company has offered, but it is not a specification sheet for OxygenOS on the OnePlus 15. Menus, feature names and regional availability can change.
Confusing network lag with touch lag
If your own character responds instantly but opponents teleport or shots register late, the network or server is likely involved. If the local camera or aim movement visibly trails your finger in an offline test, investigate frame rate, thermal throttling, touch settings and overlays instead.
How to evaluate latency before you buy
- List your actual games. Record each title’s supported frame-rate modes, controller support and server regions.
- Decide whether triggers matter. If you regularly use four-finger or claw-style controls, built-in AirTrigger can change the experience more than a specification difference.
- Plan for a 30-minute session. Look for stable frame rate and comfortable surface temperature, not just launch-time smoothness.
- Check the exact regional package. Confirm whether the Phone 9 Edition or standard model is sold locally and whether the cooler is included.
- Verify connectivity. Check carrier bands, Wi-Fi support and game-server geography for your location.
- Use independent testing when available. Seek measurements that report the complete touch-to-photon method, test game, frame rate, display mode and temperature. A single touch-sampling number is insufficient.
Bottom-line decision
The OnePlus 15 is the sensible default for a reader who wants one polished phone and strong gaming capability. Its announced 165Hz/165fps display path, dedicated touch hardware and OP Gaming Core are substantial on paper, but the cited evidence does not prove lower end-to-end latency than ASUS.
The ROG Phone 9 is the more purpose-built gaming instrument. AirTrigger, Game Genie’s up-to-185Hz mode, GameCool 9 and the optional AeroActive Cooler X Pro address controls and sustained sessions directly. Select it when those features justify the gaming-phone form factor and accessory cost—not because 720Hz automatically means less lag than OnePlus’s 3200Hz claim.
