First identify what “compressed” means: a ZIP or other archive, Windows drive compression, or a game installed and managed by a launcher. These are different situations, and a launcher-managed game usually needs its own repair or verification process—not manual extraction. Use the route below that matches what happened.
Identify how the game was compressed
Before changing files, establish which of these describes your game:

- An archive: You have a file such as a .zip containing the game files. Extract the archive to a clear destination; do not treat an already-installed game folder as an archive.
- Windows compression: The game is in a normal folder, but Windows drive properties show compression enabled.
- Launcher-managed installation: Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or another store installed and manages the game. Repair it through that launcher.
If the game is in a ZIP or another archive
In Windows 10 or 11, select the archive and use Extract All, or drag its contents to a new location. Windows 11 version 24H2 supports ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR archive operations. For another archive type, use a tool that supports that format. Confirm the destination and contents before moving or overwriting anything, especially if the archive is your only copy. If Windows drive compression is enabled
Microsoft documents reversing compression on the OS drive this way: in File Explorer, right-click the OS drive, select Properties, clear Compress this drive to save disk space, then select Apply > OK. These instructions address the OS drive; this is not a game-specific repair, and the available guidance does not establish that compression alone makes games incompatible. Repair a launcher-managed game
If Steam or Epic manages the installation, use its file-verification feature. The menu labels below are platform-specific; for another launcher, follow that store’s official repair instructions.
Steam
- Restart the computer and open Steam.
- In Library, right-click the game, or open its game page’s gear menu, and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow verification to finish; Steam says it may take several minutes.
Steam notes that one or more files may fail verification because they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. Do not repeatedly try to force those files to be replaced. Follow Steam’s file-verification guidance.

Epic Games Launcher
- Open Library.
- Click the game’s three-dot menu and select Manage.
- Click Verify and let the check complete.
Epic says verification checks for changed or damaged files and repairs or replaces files as needed; saved data is not affected. See Epic’s verification instructions.

Steam’s general launch guidance recommends checking that Windows and drivers are up to date, checking the game’s system requirements, and closing non-essential software that may interfere. If its common troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, Steam directs players to the game developer for in-depth help. The possible causes vary across hardware and software configurations; there is no single launch fix for every game. See Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide.

If the game will not update
For a Steam installation, an unwritable library folder or corrupted files can prevent updates. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Storage, open the menu for the relevant library, and select Repair Folder. Steam also lists clearing the download cache and verifying local files as update and installation troubleshooting steps. Its guidance includes changing the download region when download servers are slow, overloaded, or experiencing hardware failure; that is a network or server troubleshooting branch, not evidence that compression caused the update problem. If an executable is missing or security software flags a file
Steam says a “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)” error can result from an antivirus quarantine, corrupted files, or an incomplete download. Check your security product’s quarantine or history. Restore a file only when it is clearly associated with your legitimate game installation, then verify the game through its launcher. Do not disable antivirus protection or create a blanket exclusion to get the game running. Steam’s steps are in its missing-executable guidance.

What to send support if repair fails
When contacting the game developer or platform support, include details that make the failure reproducible:

- The game name and launcher.
- The exact error text, plus a screenshot if available.
- Where the game is installed and how it was compressed or restored.
- Available free space, if known.
- The repair and troubleshooting steps you already completed.
Steam’s missing-executable support guidance asks users who still need help to submit a support ticket with an uncropped screenshot, a System Report, and a list of troubleshooting steps. No universal compression-related update error or single update-repair tool is established for all games.
